if you’ve never played a pokémon game you’re missing out on the insane things npcs will say to you unprompted. like you’ll be walking down a path and a total stranger will see you and immediately run up to you and trap you in place and say something like ‘the divorce is getting rough but me and my pokémon are getting tough!’ and then start a battle and after you beat their single rat they’ll be like ‘i wasn’t worthy of her…’ or something

i had a feeling from the start that "wait, so if dark world spaces are based off of the real world + its objects with a fountain, then every entity in those spaces is based off of an object* in that space" was the nature of things for deltarune. and it does seem so

but, like. i think ch3 really cemented my idea that darkners are more than just objects, but they're specifically tsukumogami (minus the age requirement to gain sentience, of course).

they're just different objects than the traditional umbrellas, sandals, instruments and tools.

we have these really hard examples of "their sentience extends beyond just the dark world; as an object, they remember light world events, people and places". they're sapient objects, you just can't interface with that sapience unless you're in a dark world space.

i feel like i haven't really seen that many modern fantasy stories use tsukumogami all that much, which makes the whole thing a lot fresher and fun to me. and the way it's being spun here makes it really, really cool as a story involving them. :D

*do spam emails and viruses constitute objects? i think ch2 does extend the concept to "fine details and phenomena that can exist in the light world". they do have a physical footprint, if very very small.
