This is the best movie pitch I’ve ever heard

What I remember the most from reading Lord of the Rings is a scene in The Two Towers where Frodo and Sam are talking about something, I don’t remember what exactly, but Gollum is listening and his face crumbles and transforms as he listens. And !! Tolkien notes that for a moment he looks like a very old and very sad hobbit again not just the shriveled up, tormented creature we know as Gollum. It is the one scene I physically remember reading because when I read it I felt like someone had just run something very sharp through my chest.

And. It’s the thing. It’s the thing that makes me cry. It’s the thing that kills me all the time in all places- that no one is trash, that no one is garbage, that no one is irredeemable. Smeagol isn’t redeemed and his choices are terrible and they are fully his but he still matters! His existence isn’t nothing and it isn’t even something only in relation to the story as a whole and the part he (unintentionally) plays in saving Middle Earth. It’s that- he matters. He is somebody. There is something to love in Gollum, there is worth in his whole being and existence even if he betrays it (and he does betray it). 

And I was and am still so struck and shaken by Tolkien’s compassion for those tattered flickers of goodness and feeling still left in Smeagol and, not exactly his love for all creatures in the way we think of it, but his love for them in terms of understanding their true worth- and that he gives you this moment where we see the capacity for love, tenderness, regret, feeling even in a character who ultimately, and literally, falls to his doom.

I know there are lots of other reasons to love Tolkien but this scene alone is enough for me because it says so much about the scope of his compassion and understanding and how far it extends.

Hot take: maybe if we stopped shaming people for reading fic on FFN and Wattpad, they'd continue reading on sites that they're comfortable with and know the culture of and can find the fics they want to read.

Scorching take: I love AO3, but the interface is not as easy as you think it is for a newcomer who is very used to the sites they're already using.

In summary: let people read the fic they want to read on the sites where they want to read it, and if they decide for themselves that AO3 seems like a site they want to learn how to use, point them to resources that will help them learn how to use it.

For example: if you're new to AO3, you might find it really useful to tap on the word About in the red bar at the top of the page and then choose FAQ from the dropdown. And if you're new to posting on AO3, tap on any blue question mark bubbles you see and they'll tell you what a thing means and what you should do with it.

Okay you asked for headcanon prompts and I have a good one (i think)- Damian brings home a betta fish from school and names it Bruce, and the family starts calling it mini Bruce and... I'm not sure where I was going with this haha

(I think I get what you’re trying to say, Nonnie! I love this prompt lol)

The Batfamily & Bruce the Fish

Dick wants to name it bat-fish because it’s dark purpley-black but Damian immediately vetos the name

After Tim remarks that the fish does nothing and just stays there brooding at them, Damian and Steph name him Bruce the fish

Damian does extensive research and finds out that fish need lots of space and clean water and obstacles and play structures so he nabs Bruce’s credit card and spends 600 dollars on Amazon

When Bruce asks about it Damian insists that ‘it’s for mini-Bruce, father, and we must respect him and treat him well’

Alfred the cat tries to eat the fish and Damian spends the next hour trying to explain to Alfred that he doesn’t choose favorites

Bruce the fish’s tank takes up half of the wall in Damian’s room and is filled with little structures and is NOT to be TOUCHED

Dick gets a large cave structure for him and names it the bat-fish-cave

Damian: ‘His name is BRUCE not BAT-FISH, GRAYSON’

Dick: ‘Do you think he fights algae instead of crime’

When Jason is at the house he pokes at the glass to get Bruce the fish’s attention and then gives him the finger

Jason: ‘Bruce and I may be on good terms but I miss flipping him off’

Damian: ‘do not disrespect my fish like this, Todd’

Cass likes to sneak into Damian’s room and sit in front of the tank and look at the fish

Duke gives him a tiny sliver of mango one day because the internet said he could and Damian accuses him of trying to assassinate the fish through poison and chases him through the manor with his kata

Duke doesn’t interact with the fish after that

Jason starts calling Bruce ‘Bruce the human’ and Bruce the fish ‘Bruce’

Bruce the human isn’t happy about that

Tim is bored one day and makes a filter for the tank that can change colors and has a party mode that has a motion sensor so it turns on if the fish ever moves

He adds music to it too but tells nobody

At 2 o’clock in the morning the tank lights up and starts playing Sk8ter Boi by Avril Lavigne at 100% volume

Damian finds a new reason to attempt murder on Tim

Bruce the human and Bruce the fish have an unspoken rivalry

Tim plays the game ‘Who said it: Bruce the fish or Bruce the human?’ and then proceeds to be completely silent

Jason claims that Bruce the fish would never dress up teenagers in costumes and make them fight crime and thus is superior

Jason also wants to put another betta fish in the tank and make them fight

Anyway Bruce the fish is a member of the batfamily

Everyone agrees

Except maybe Bruce the human
