Manga def gave me a much higher appreciation of Izumi than brotherhood did because like? watching brotherhood and she showed back up again after a long time and I remember being like “I feel like this is supposed to be more important than this is coming off as, but I guess it’s nice to see you again Izumi??” Although I was definitely always on the lookout for when ling would finally pop back up. I declared him my fave the literal episode before he became greed so I was Starved for a while 😭

03 though… I’m not a hater of 03, I can appreciate what they did and how they did it with what little they had to go on at the time, but it’s just not the right vibes for me to sit down and watch (and not just because ling isn’t in it). I did read a synopsis of the story though, and it definitely did some things very interestingly and I kind of find it like some fascinating case study!! A sort of darkest timeline case study. I probably would’ve had a deeper appreciation for Izumi if I had watched 03, but I also think it was Foolish of studio bones to just assume people who were watching brotherhood watched 03 or wanted to watch 03.

I completely agree with you. Izumi in Brotherhood feels just...not important??? I mean, I love that woman but they did a terrible job trying to make her relationship with the Elric Brothers some kind of found family idk how to explain it, maybe I need to finish my re-watch but I think they could do more with them because it is really sad how distant they are in Brotherhood compared with fma03 or the manga as you said. AND YESS I was like you, reaching for more a more of Ling's scenes and they give me ✨ nothing ✨ after the GreedLing introduction.

Fun fact: I hated Ling the exact moment the appeared on screen for the first time, but then when he fought with Bradley I was like "Oh man, he is such a great character!!!" AND BOM, GREED TOOK HIS BODY AND DISAPPEARED?!!!

And about fma03, I understand you. I mean, I prefer the original plot, the characters in the mangahood (Ling and Van Hohenheim) and I prefer the homunculi and Father as villains than Dante. I watched first 2003 because I thought Brotherhood was a second season and when I started it I was so f confused. I like to think that fma2003 is a what if or an AU fic, so I can enjoy both of them (or three counting the manga). But yeah, there are some things that they included in fma03 but were removed in Brotherhood and I don't understand why they thought it was a good idea.

Hello!!! (This is Kat lol, I can't send my from secondary blog, sigh.) Totally hijacking the Ling talk, but that train scene with Ed getting all frustrated over Ling being taller than him is a fucking HOOT. 10/10 fav. On another note on the manga... I might be supremely biased against Brotherhood cuz I'm an 03 girlie, but I have to agree about the manga being better than brotherhood too. I esp prefer the Elrics' and Izumi's relationship in the manga. They have all these little moments together that show she's more than just a teacher to them. Like, one of my FAVORITE moments is when Ed and Al start bragging to Izumi, as a child does to their mother, how they've been following her teachings of "to train the mind, train the body," and the panel then cuts to Izumi smiling proudly at them. It's fucking EVERYTHING to me.

YES, completely agree with you! I love that scene, it just wkdhejfbsjsakandjaa how Ed was about to kill everyone and then himself while Ling was just so happy to be there. They are so stupid!!! I love them jdjfbakdnhjna.

Talking about fma03, I need to be honest and said I used to be a die-hard hater because I'm a Ling Yao fanboy sorry Im guilty BUT few months ago I began to become very fond of it and to understand that there really is nothing wrong with it being so far from the original story. I'm a new person now, a fma03 defender and fmab hater 🗣️ But I am glad that we all agree with the manga being top.

I'm dying to read the Dublith arc!! I want to see more of the Elrics and Izumi because if I remember right, in fma03 they feel more like a family than just teacher-student and I miss that. I want to see the moment you are talking about!!! It sounds so 😭😭😭 they are just kids who want a mom 🥲

Yeah, the entirety of dublith comes off way more differently in fmab than in the manga, and greed and Izumi are definitely the ones who suffered for that.

That scene you’re talking about is a good one! It really made no sense that the entire fight with ling and lan fan vs envy and gluttony was cut? Like, it’s kind of a big deal for them and their quest, but it’s also important for the homunculi because they’re encountering strong foreign warriors getting in the way of their plans to the point that they couldn’t back up lust which led to her dying? I think the thing about that fight I think the most about is when ling is running from gluttony and asking lan fan to toss him his sword. Something about that image is great to me. I do agree though with the whole visible sag of relief that the big bad homunculi are gone and the sort of “what the heck have I really gotten myself into” kinda mood from the usual chill vibe ling.

My favorite scene though is a bit earlier than that. They had a few more scenes in rush valley than just the fight, but the manga also had part of the train ride from rush valley to central and that’s where ling explains fu and lan fan are from a family that’s served his clan for generations. Edward tries to tease him in that whole “oh you’re too chicken to go traveling without your personal retainers” kind of way and there’s just something about ling responding that it’s dangerous for a kid to travel alone and that he’s fifteen that gets me every time. On a more serious note, another scene of ling’s I like from rush valley is after he has his whole “I can’t afford to be worried about appearances” chat with fu and lan fan, he actually has a few panels where he’s internally thinking that something definitely senses off about the country of amestris. Also feels like that was important and shouldn’t have been cut but. Studio bones.

I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT THEY DID SO WRONG GREED IN BROTHERHOOD. I'm waiting to read the Dublith arc!! I bought that volume but it will arrive in one or two more weeks, and I need to see what they did to my love. It's a shame that original Greed just appeared in two episodes in fmab, so I hope the manga does him justice 😔

AND YESS!! I love how badass Lan Fan was in that fight while Ling was so confused and crying for help HAJAHDJAHAHA. It's sad how Bones treated the Xing gang so badly (because they also removed all May Chang's first apparition!!!)

I know which scene you are talking!!! Ling being aware he is just a child is so important to me because it makes this contrast with Edward, who always acts like he is a grown-up and can do all by himself. Idk, I love his dynamic, and how Ed is furious because Ling is younger and taller than him.

Bones needs to make another anime adaptation because I'm unsatisfied 😠

I remember watching brotherhood first and being like, “man, ling’s my fave, wish there was more of him” so when I finally read the manga not only was I even sadder about how things went in dublith with greed, I realized there WAS more ling, we were just robbed by the whims of the anime studio.

That being said, what’s your favorite bit of Ling from the manga that didn’t show up in the anime?

I started the manga for the same reason!!! I watched fmab years ago, when I was like 10 and Ling has been my fave since then. Now that I have the opportunity to read the manga I'm just really sad because Ling never had much screen time in the anime, and now knowing that's because Studio Bones removed scenes for the manga it's just 😭

I'm reading the volumes out of order, I'm right at the part where they are going to kill Lust, but for the moment if I had to say which Ling scene has been my favorite I would say when Pride orders Envy and Gluttony to leave. I love how Ling had this arrogant attitude towards the homunculi, as if they didn't seem like a big deal to him, but just seconds after they disappear the strong boy's facade falls and he looks truly affected and scared. It just makes sense yk!!! Yes, he is this cool and chill guy most of the time, he always acts like the world belongs to him but see that he is scared even when he tries to hide it l...idk

I am truly devastated because they eliminated that moment.

And now you're telling me they also changed Greed's scenes?!! I am fmab hater.
