The final spreads. I am really happy with how they turned out, and I definitely think they show Skinnys personality :)

I took away the square boxes around the 6 images like Paul said to, and adds handwritten markings overtop reminiscent of a contact sheet. I also swapped out a few of the images to be Skinnys process images, to better integrate them throughout the spreads.

Typography changes. I have decided to change the typography to Forma DJR Display for the titles due to the fact that it better suits the style of imagery. The body copy has also been changed to Fira Sans.

I have changed the cover image to match the other images used in the rest of the spread, using the threshold image treatment.

Feedback from Paul.
-overall vibe and image treatment is cool.
-I need to change the front cover, the halftone doesn’t fit and the large title is confusing as only “NY” shows on the front cover.
-hanging text needs to be sorted
-i have to change the little 6 images on the fourth spread to not have the black outlines, maybe a more organic handwritten version like on contact sheets
-typography is weak, needs altering.

Formative Feedback.
I got my feedback for the formative, which I am very confused by.
I was told that the threshold image treatment confused the viewer and makes it hard to see the images. I was intending to do that. As Skinny says, she loves grunge art and music, she loves the texture and materiality of her work, and she tries to incorporate simplicity and purity in her work. By stripping the images to two colours emulates grunge image making styles, it shows the bare texture and materiality that Skinny values, and shows purity and simplicity.
The feedback said that I am not showing her personality, but I disagree. The images themselves are very reminiscent of the images Skinny herself shares on social media and included in her own work processes. I know the subject very well personally, and I think that the spreads very clearly show Skinny’s “vibe” and the mood that she provides.
I’m not sure if I’m totally off by disagreeing with the feedback, but I feel like I have clearly communicated my image treatment choices and it reflects that in the writing about Skinny on the spreads. So to be honest I am very confused by the feedback, but it might just be down to personal style. Anyway, I believe in the work I have done and think it communicates the personality of my subject, but maybe I am wrong in doing so :/

I finally got my handover back :/ I think its interesting how they still used the black and white vibe with lots of negative space and showcasing the interesting texture of the rings.

Skinny loves grunge music, so I had a look into grunge magazine and album imagery. There is a consistent theme of distortion, fragmentation, organic image making, texture, and analogue.

Some more image treatments for the visual essay!

When playing around with image treatments I tried to emulate some of the effects Skinny uses on her Instagram on her own photos, a sort of heat signature high exposure colour. Not sure if I’ll use it, as it doesn’t fit in with other imagery in my visual essay.

Some image treatments to Skinny’s work in progress photos. The treatments are similar to others that skinny uses in other (lower quality and unusable) progress photos.

Skinny mentioned her love for the Ramones so I had a little look into their ethos and visual overall vibe, to maybe help communicate Skinny’s. It is usually black and white, textural, and leathery.

I was playing around with some image treatment techniques for the cover of the visual essay. I think it would be cool to have the middle of her face over the centre of the spine, so it wraps around the entire cover, with half the face showing when looking at the front or back.

I received some photos of Skinny’s creative process, and hope to use them in the visual essay to show her jewellery making.
