Literally cannot stop thinking about how sad Jon and Gerry’s missed connection was. Like, we have a literal canon scene where Gerry is out in the courtyard of the Institute burning a Leitner, something Jon has been trying to get information on for years, and Jon is just… a wall away in research. Literally just a wall. If he’d gone outside for a smoke, or walked through to get to another part of the building, he would have seen Gerry there! He would have seen this guy in a leather trenchcoat with the most atrocious dye job standing in his workplace setting an evil book he’s been looking for for years on fire and he didn’t! He was so close and he didn’t!

Jon’s entire story could be different if he’d been walking past. And I doubt that was the only time Gerry was just strolling about the institute! He was right there and everything could have changed if he’d done one thing that would lead Jon to believe he knew something, because we all know how Jon is when he Needs To Know

24 year old Jon asking around to see who this guy could be, and no one has any idea, so eventually he takes matters into his own hands. He sees him out a window one day, dragging a bin out into the courtyard and throwing something in before dousing it in lighter fluid. He’s out the door before he can get the match to strike, glasses nearly falling down.

“That’s a leitner.”

The man looks up, match still clutched between his thumb and forefinger, but he’s stilled. It’s a moment before he speaks. “Maybe that research department isn’t as bad at its job as I thought.”

Despite himself, Jon laughs. “No it’s… he’s barely mentioned there, actually, in anything we have in the library. It’s quite appalling. My knowledge of Leiter it’s… slightly more personal.”

He cocks his eyebrow, “Oh yeah?” And suddenly he’s tossed the matchbox to Jon, who fumbles but makes the catch. “You want to burn one?”

One of the funniest failures of US school system is the fact they are legally obligated to teach us all the states but they never actually show how big Alaska is like I have actually had teachers tell me that Texas is the biggest state. We have all just convinced ourselves that Alaska is that small shrunken down thing on most US maps and the people that know it's the largest state can almost never accurately describe how large it is.
