if i had a nickel for every time beetee should have warned a boy from the seam about the consequences of his actions while the fandom bends over backwards to justify it, i would have two nickels. which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.

I’ve had an influx of askers talking about Gale (neat and fun) but that also means an influx of people saying things like “Gale acted inappropriately towards Katniss” or “Gale had a lack of empathy” and. show me where. put your money where your mouth is. get the book out. give me proof that he acted inappropriately ever towards Katniss (he did not). give me proof that he displays no empathy (you can’t, also a lack of empathy doesn’t make someone automatically evil and it’s weird you think that). either way I am thrilled to talk about Gale but there are some really wild claims being made that I don’t think have actual canon basis whatsoever and in the end it’s harder for me to respond to you intelligently when some of the ask is based in analysis of the books and some of it is just wild fanon and the two are conflated.

My unpopular Gale opinion is that I dont think he ever loses sight of who the real enemy is. And he makes plenty of mistakes but I dont think he lacks empathy or doesnt see human life as valuable. I know people argue that his actions regarding the Nut are heartless but a) i seriously doubt he was the first with the strategy to collapse the nut (no matter how collins frames it) and b) the nut was a military base, its existence aided in the bombing of hospitals, children and district 12. I think everyone would have preferred if there was a peaceful way or less horrible way to stop the Nut but there likely wasnt without even more severe loss of life (rebel troops going in would have also been a massacre and many had already lost their lives trying to get control of it). The point is that war is ugly. I hate how Katniss and by extension SC tries to argue that that kind of thinking (destroying the Nut) leads to thinking that supports the hunger games. Like there is a massive difference between the two and fandom runs with it to portray Gale as reprehensible.
I hate that fandom acts like Gale has not experienced death or loss because he wasnt in the arena. He experienced that on a much larger scale than Katniss with the d12 bombing, whereas Katniss sees murder and death in the arena on a smaller scale where individuals are at fault which explains why they both react the way they do in mockingjay. In saying that I really feel that Mockingjay does not give enough attention to the district 12 bombing as it should. I don't think it makes sense the victor's village wasnt bombed (it should have been the first thing). But except for Madge, everyone Katniss cares about seems to survive and Katniss even gets to keep family mementos and sentimental things. Obviously because she is the main character but I think it would have been more awful (and realistic) if they had been lost because frankly that is what happens during genocide. There is no warning and people are left with nothing. Its what happened to everyone else in d12. And i definitely hate that SC writes that some survivors thought it was good luck to be of free of d12 at last. I just think that would have been an insane thing to say after watching 90% of your people perish. Considering everyone likely lost someone during the bombing I'm assuming those survivors got sucker punched almost immediately.
I want to print this ask out and frame it
YEAH. Yeah. Katniss and Gale have both suffered immensely but the way that they’ve experienced death and loss is markedly different. one of the things they initially connected on was the loss of their fathers in the same mining accident, and they had similar views and experiences of death. but then Katniss goes into the Games and that starts to diverge. for Katniss, killing is a deeply personal act because she had to do it in such close quarters and suffered so acutely. for Gale, he sees how callously and easily the Capitol inflicts a genocide by wiping out a district and he begins to see death and loss as something that can be done sweepingly to achieve an aim. I don’t think he sees that as a positive thing at all, but he sees how the Capitol wields mass death as a tool and he realizes (correctly, btw) that the only way for the rebels to prevail is to match their tactics.
and his approach makes sense. Gale watched a genocide. he was the only reason any of his people survived at all. the weight of that and the responsibility he was shoved into at max 19 years old is horrifying. he is the only reason D12 still exists. he is also the only reason the rest of the country finds out what happened to D12. and Katniss displays absolutely no understanding of how that would affect him, because she’s also extremely traumatized and stuck in quite a self centered mindset, but as readers we can extrapolate and think about just how much that would screw with his head. but of course this lack of sensitivity and thought also comes from SC, for the reasons you pointed out. the idea that some survivors would be glad to be free of D12…gross. I’m sure plenty of people had very complex feelings about it but who is glad to see their home burn, everything they know lost, and 90 percent of their people killed?

Might disagree slightly with the everlark take but ROCK ON ANON
the truth about gale haters is this — they're the same kind of people who supposedly advocate for eating the rich / protests & boycotts, but at the same time believe that "violence (to achieve peace) is wrong!" and that there's certain people to spare (e.g. their favorite rich people) when all of them should be held accountable for their silence and non-accountability in most instances.
they cannot handle the reality of oppression getting bad enough that it causes the oppressed to get radicalized and fight back because 1) this either doesn't benefit them in any way or 2) will supposedly disrupt the peace that comes with their current living, whilst everyone else is suffering.
gale is a character who is constantly beaten down by the system. a coal miner who watched his father die to the same fate, a breadwinner for a 5-person family next to his mother, a boy who had to take MORE tessarae than katniss ever dreamed of, and someone who was actively persecuted for his survival via violence (see: the whipping.)
he may have not gone into the arena like katniss and peeta did, but what he suffers is tenfold to their struggles. and people wonder why he despises the capitol and gives them no sympathy. and people wonder why he was ready for the call to arms rebellion-wise. and people wonder WHY he became so quickly radicalized and angered by the suffering of himself and his people. he pulled out 800/900+ people from the wreckage of an entire district, and yet this fandom wonders why he's so affected. he is traumatized, and he has been used over and over in a way that many readers cannot comprehend.
but ah, yes — we should be focusing on how he treats katniss; as if he isn't always telling her how things are for her concern and safety, and isn't constantly addressing how in which she harms the people around her by playing with their emotions & only finding usage in them when they are at their most "vulnerable." this manifests in her only dealing with gale when he's in pain/compromised, and same with any situation with peeta. what this fandom also doesn't understand is that gale never thinks lowly of peeta — he thinks lowly of how katniss deals with them both, and how peeta is ultimately put on a pedestal.
the difference between gale, who loves and cares about katniss and has for nearly 6 years as a best friend and overall confidante — is that he doesn't see peeta as an obstacle to their friendship or an issue. he's the same boy who volunteered to rescue him, after all. in contrast, peeta, as a parasocial, highly abused & manipulative young boy who utilizes the idea of katniss for personal gain, rather than actually caring for the real her, sees gale as a threat because he has a level of awareness of who katniss is that he will never have.
because there is a genuine love and friendship there that doesn't only exist for the cameras, or live idealized in either of their heads. moreover, the one thing that gale was right about, katniss choosing who she believes she won't live without — wasn't because gale was an unsuitable life partner, but instead because of the level of everlark's traumabonding, and the endless debt that katniss would always feel towards peeta. katniss also not being radicalized in the same way as gale and almost a bystander to events in a revolutionary's clothing makes the idea of "peeta's peace" a reality where she wouldn't confront conflict or an aftermath head on, and can protect a healthier conscience than one where she'd be held accountable by gale. peeta will never tell katniss about herself when it comes to the negative aspects, because he can't see that unless hijacked. gale could, and always did. everlark to me is a yes-man bubble of disillusionment and extreme trauma between two teenagers, and it's unfortunate that this isn't the common consensus.
go anon go!!!!

Sometimes hunger games 'fans' make me wanna rip my hair out
peeta : suffered an abusive childhood, low self-esteem, survived two hunger games, was willing to die multiple times throughout the series, lost his leg, was captured and tortured by the president and his men, his entire family died, lost his entire memory/sense of self, practically had nothing left to live for.
gale : lost his father at thirteen, had to risk his life every day to provide for his mother and all his younger siblings, watched the genocide of his people and was powerless to stop it, was whipped publicly until he almost bled out and died, was manipulated and exploited by a president who saw his trauma as a weapon she could use.
people who zero reading comprehension : “those boys only cared about katniss! she had a revolution to lead and they just dragged her down and focused only on kissing! the books would have been more nuanced without romance!”

Say what you will but the man knew politics like his hand
My personal favorite thing about ACOWAR was Tamlins ingenuity. Like holy shit.
He started with weakened forces due to Amaranthas deal killing off his men. Then Feyres *~* boss bitch*~* plan to turn the rest of his court against him. By the time the war comes around he does not have an army and he still pulled more than his weight.
Tamlin obtained a STACK of information on Hyberns plans down to where exactly they were keeping the feybane. How, when, where, what, all of that shit and shared it with all of the High Lords. Didn't keep it a secret (like RhySAnd does with most shit) cause that would've been dumb. He got actual useful information on how to bring down Hybern in half a year, RhySAnd didn't get any information standing by Amaranthas side for 50.
He blew his cover and saved Feyre, Elain, Briar and Azriel using his wind magic to get them airborn and his brute strength to fight off the hounds. They would be dead without Tamlins help. All of them.
And THEN HE SHOWS UP DRAGGING BARON BY THE SCRUFF OF HIS NECK. He commands BARONS SONS (who fucking listen to him) where and how to destroy the feybane caches. And commanding BARONS ARMY.
This man will figure. it. out.
While most of RhySAnds plans end up only barely working out by sheer luck, Tamlins just fucking work. Like hate him all you want, but without him yall would've gone into that war relying on nothing more than RhySAnds inflated sense of self worth. Tamlin delivers results, every single time.
ACOWAR was Tamlins redemption arc from MAF. And everything else forward is just a testament to RhySAnds insecurity.
The NC was out here playing checkers, while Tamlins playing chess. Do you realize how bad you have to be when you have a full board and the guy you're playing against starts off missing his rooks and bishops and you still lose?

I have written less than I thought I would for Valgrace week, but it's fine. I just need to finish editing my fic for day 1, and then I'll upload it hopefully on time.
