Evaluation
Evaluation – Studio culture
Studio culture was an interesting project. The brief told us that we were to create the branding for a studio that we must make up ourselves. It took some time trying to understand what was asked of us, writing down notes for ideas, rejection from ideas, but eventually we settled on something that everyone approved of. We decided that for our studio culture project, we would create the branding for an open studio where people could come in from anywhere, pay for our services, and then be given our facilities and equipment to use as a way to create artwork in many different forms. We decided to call it ‘Plan C’, where the plan c was coming to the studio when plan A and B, doing it from home or paying someone else to do it for you, wasn’t an available option. It also had a double meaning to it, where Plan C also stood for Plan Creative. We created some logos for it, which is an essential part of the branding process. It well communicates who we are without even having to explain ourselves. Originally, we were going to create artwork that we can pretend was made by our customers and use it on the website and social media, but we didn’t have enough time for that and didn’t end up doing it. But we did do a lino cutting of our logo. It went well and was mostly a success, apart from the fact it was backwards and only was the right way around on the acetate. It wasn’t really an issue for me though, more of a learning experience for next time. Plus, we managed to improvise with creating purple by mixing some red, blue and white so that it could match our logo colors. Although, the lines weren’t kind of messy as I am not very good at doing lino. I’d have to practice more to get cleaner lines, but the jagged lines don’t always have to always necessarily be something bad. Did we succeed in our project through branding? I think we did quite well. We created a great concept for an open studio that has the potential to do thrive, created logos, business cards, merchandise as well as a website that can easily be navigated. The website had taken inspiring elements from other existing websites too, such as the home page layouts. The common aspects of a website were there and shows in the mockup that it can be clicked on and accessed. The website describes who we are, what we stand for, showcases artwork that can be made, as well as sells merchandise to our valued customers. Something that we could improve on however, was that at the start of the project, we were working well on it. However, through out the middle, we got too focused on our counter culture project and were working more onto that and kind of ended up forgetting about working on studio culture. Next time we should balance it out more and make sure studio culture is getting done too.
Evaluation – counter culture
During this project, my goal for the counter culture brief was to design a magazine called ‘Explorer’ which highlighted the positive aspects of the internet and the impact it has had on society. To do this, I had to use elements of graphic design such as illustration, typography and visual hierarchy in order to effectively communicate my message. I wanted it to change the idea of the internet being mostly bad than good. Although it may not be perfect, I wanted people to be able to recognize the good in it so that they don’t wish it was completely ridden of. I also wanted people who already felt positive about it to continue feeling that way, relating to my magazine and feeling nostalgic. I believe that my magazine turned out pretty good. The information was clear, concise and relevant to my topic. I tried to make it engaging to the target audience and feel positive. There was enough information without being too overwhelming. Visually, I think it managed to hit its goal of having a bright, retro, early internet feel to it using illustrations such as internet tabs, paint tabs and scroll bars. I liked my choice of font for both headings and text. However, if there was one thing, I wish I could have done better, it would be having more illustrations on there. Since my time was limited and I was busy trying to get everything done in time, I didn’t have enough time to make as many illustrations as I wanted to. I wanted to make multiple detailed ones to put in. Unfortunately, it’s too time-consuming and I just didn’t end up having the time to make them. Another thing I didn’t end up adding was the weird experiences I planned on. This was because after gathering a few of them from people, I realised that a lot of them were negatives which you already hear people complaining about a lot. That pretty much defeated the purpose of my magazine, which was to put the internet in a positive light instead of a negative one. Because of that, I wasn’t sure if I should add it in for that wacky aspect, but risk it reversing the intended effect of my magazine on its target audience, or just leave it as it was and end it there. Instead, I just decided to not add it in at all. Most of the image making was done on illustrator and transferred onto indesign. Although, creating the image inside of the paint tab was done seperately as a bitmap. Same applies for the pixel music app and pixel cloud. Those were added as pixel images to add to the old retro feeling, as well as look like the old video games. I managed to print it out as the size I wanted so it would look like a desktop screen. However, I couldn’t bind it the way I wanted to, which was unfortunate. This was due to the fact that I did not have the required materials to do it at the time and didn’t obtain them. It was also because I hadn’t learned how to do the binding too. If I had the chance to do this again, I would like to make sure I have the required materials and have taught myself how to properly bind it too. Another thing I would like to add is that the paper wasn’t anything special either. Perhaps next time I could find specific paper to use in the size I wanted. Something interesting and fitting, maybe something that feels a little bit like a screen would be a nice touch. When it came to doing my t-shirt print, that came out successful for me. I think it was a good way for branding purposes but it also looked visually appealing and it was fun for me to do. Although it came out a little different on the fabric of the shirt and I had to go over it again, it worked well and it’s a good process. Hopefully when it comes around to the next project, I can work at a better pace and get more done faster. I hope that my skill set can grow even more, as it did this project and I have even more fun ideas.

Personal Statement for uni-
I have a big imagination since I really love the world of fiction and things that do not exist in reality. I like anything that shows off creativity and a unique sense of individuality to show what goes on in your brain and who you are. Currently I am studying Graphic Design, but I am also interested in pursuing UX/UI Design in the future. The reason behind why I would like to do this is because I have a great interest in creativity and technology. Ever since I was a young child, I've always loved being creative by drawing and making things. I have also always been drawn into anything technology related. It's something that has fascinated me and made me glad that I was born into a generation that is blooming with technological advancements. It allows me to make the most of using and enjoying technology whenever I can. That is why I want to be part of that world by helping to create digital things, while also letting my creative side take control too. I believe that letting these interests help decide my career path will make me enjoy my career choice as much as I possibly can. I also believe I'll really enjoy doing my best when I try to market my product, looking at statistics and how it will psychologically work in the minds of the consumer. I find that to be really exciting and a great journey with satisfying results. I really would like a career where I can create, but also successfully market my creations. When it comes to my passion for my favourite hobby of art, I love experimenting a lot with this. Whether it may be using markers, paint, pencils, on paper, canvases or even digital art. I like exploring all sorts of new methods, finding what I enjoy and what works for me. I also enjoy anything related to food (I love good food) or surfing the web and finding new corners of the internet. My creative process is starting off by looking into what I want to create and finding existing work that I can use as research to generate my own ideas. Then I'll likely sketch it out and pick my favourite idea. Afterwards, I would get straight to creating what I have in mind. I have learnt to work both on a Mac and PC, so I can adjust myself to work on whichever one is presented to me. I am also learning to use Adobe software and I have found that I adapted quickly to any software that I am newly introduced to. I often am able to use the internet to learn new techniques I can use whenever I am struggling. My skills are artistic things such as drawing and making artwork. I have technical skills in software, such as Adobe, Microsoft and other computer related things, involving creating things such as posters, magazines, and also moving images. I know how to navigate my way around the software. I would consider myself to be creative. Inside of art, I admire artists in media who have an interesting stylised art form. One of the people who's art I admire is Roy Lichtenstein who is an American pop artist from the 60s who created graphical, expressive artwork. I also enjoy creating these types of art myself during my free time. They are what inspire me to be creative, alongside animation, and give me inspiration to create art. I wish to one day have the high level of skill that they hold. I want to be a designer who is able to work both under any circumstance. I want to become independent in what I can do. I am taking a College course in Graphic Design, and have spent time during my first year of College doing industry placement work for Birmingham Updates from the Nonsensical Agency as a photographer (including photo editing for my images) while balancing my regular assignments at the same time. I have hopes that taking further education will open new doors and opportunities for me, changing my life for the better.Once I gain experience working, I have hopes of being able to do freelance work for more flexibility and to be my own boss, and perhaps go the extra mile by starting my own agency or business whenever I am able to do so, as a leader.

Project proposal
Rationale-
Before this course, I had a limited understanding of how to use software, specifically Adobe, such as Photoshop for example. Throughout my time during the course and these units, I have learnt and gained these skills that are essential to me in being a graphic designer. Through tutorials, class time, lessons and exploration that is personal, I have learned how I can use this different software to my advantage, based on what I want to create. For example, I learned how to create zines on InDesign, images on illustrator, photo editing on photoshop, video editing on premiere pro and video animation on aftereffects. I found that I really enjoy creating things that are bold, bright and artistic. I want to continue to create more of these things in the future. The course has really helped me be more ambitious in terms of design. It has helped me try and stretch out my ideas beyond the surface, finding meaning to everything I make and how it can make an impact, all while enjoying it too.

Evaluation-
I plan to evaluate my work throughout. I’m going to be doing this by having pictures of the work I have done, including processes, and describe my process, failures, problem solving and techniques that I have used through my work. Next to them I shall also write and talk about them too. I will use these to reflect on them for the next time I do these things, so that I can improve and be better.

Intro
Little intro we worked on, inspired by and in the style of 'The Office'. We made this by taking clips we had, putting them together, slighting slowing down and adding music over to introduce each character, giving them their own scene, followed by the name of the episode.

Unfortunately, our tutor did not fully validate this film version. We wanted it to have certain types of humour and although we thought it was funny, their feedback was that there was too many video and sound effects. They said that it was too, too overboard and just didn't fit right. They also said that the effects, such as the screen shatter were too clean and sharp and high budgeted for a film that is supposed to be low budget. The quality of the film was bad but the shatter was too sharp. So we removed the extra effects.

This is an example of a failed take. The reason this is failed is because even though everything was mostly going well, it's difficult to hold in our laughter and there were many instances were we would just burst out laughing. However, after a while we would get used to it. Failed takes can sometimes be a problem because they take up valuable time having to redo them, or if you choose to edit it that can be tedious. It also wastes the rest of the clip that may have been useful and very successful.
We also did some shopping too for art supplies that we can use to make our puppets. We all went together and picked out the stuff we needed, as well a using some clips as part of the intro and outro.

Evaluation + Project Proposal
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Full Evaluation:
The theme of this unit was ‘Talk Show’, where we were randomly put into groups and required to generate ideas for creating our own talk show. The outcome that was expected from us was a completed film put onto tumblr, including an opening title sequence that we must make. Our time management however, wasn’t the best, because filming ended only a day before the deadline, since there was so much to film and it ended up being 20 minutes long (a lot longer than we had thought it would be). The first week was spent doing planning and preparation for our film. Unfortunatly, when second week arrived, we realised we still had some prepping to do because everything just felt so uncertain and lost on where to begin. After that was out the way, we followed a storyboard and started filming. We thought we would get it done quickly, however, to our dismay it dragged on to the final week all up until Thursday when we finished filming and focused on editing and posting. Next time, I think we should manage this much better by creating a written down timetable and calculating time more efficently.
My research was done by looking into creations for inspiration for our talk show. The first one that we had decided was 'The Office'. This was because the style of it was very similar to what we wanted. An awkward film of us trying to get by with our lives in our work. Other research was 'Don't hug me I'm scared', because they use puppets and create videos that are very strange with stories that do not make any sense. We took inspiration from the strange puppet show idea. Another research link that was used was Becky and Joe's directed episode for Gumball. In this episode, they become puppets, so real life puppets are used for this specific episode too. And on top of that, it's also very strange and goofy again, which is exactly what we wanted for our film. However, these were all secondary research. I think next time, I should look more into doing primary research too. The outcomes that these helped us start to develop were creating props such as puppets that we wanted to use, as well as developing more and more ideas for our show as we went on.
Some experiments that we have done were filming many scenes that we could potentially use, as well as testing with the camera. We also tested out creating different types of puppets we could also use. The concept and ideas was that we were going to create a behind the scenes of a puppet show, showing the lives of College students struggling to create this show that they want to submit as their project. It was supposed to be low budgeted, strange and goofy. We developed it for a particular audience who were young, yet mature. They would need to have a certain type of humour and be comfortable with dark jokes, as we were going to use those in our film. It would follow a type of humour and our audience would need to be those who understand and share the type so that they can find it funny. This then influenced the jokes and craziness we would have, including the style of editing and filming we were making. For example, the characters had references to fictional and real people, the jokes were for the audience of young adults and there was a lot of yelling. Some challenges we came across was that it felt like it took too long to film everything. It was stretched out onto more and more days and it was taking a while. Do get this done, we came in extra days that usually we would not have college, just so that we could get filming done with, plus did some work from home too that did not require the actual filming part such as editing and posting for Tumblr.
In the end, I think we really did achieve what we wanted to. Our goal was to produce a completed episode as our film for this project. We did what we wanted to, and met all the criteria for our concepts. I am happy with the final outcome. If given the chance to do something differently, it would probably be making sure I managed time better so that we don't stress over getting things done next time. What I have learnt with this project is that getting along and communicating well with your team is vital. Since everyone got along well and communicated their ideas thoroughly, we were able to all enjoy the project while we did everything.

Editing Film
This was the process of editing were everyone had come together while at home to discuss editing, doing it live in real time. This gave everyone a chance to work from the comfort of their own homes without the need of being in college or during within college hours. Going on call while screen sharing let everyone see what was going on and pitch in their own thoughts and ideas for editing. It's also helpful that it can easily be recorded as proof and to show the process of editing were discussions are also made.
