Between the Sea and Sky is a regency era IF— written with CScript— that includes the wondrous world of mermaids.
Setting(s) Atlantis || London, England
Genre(s): Historical (Regency), Drama, Romance, Adventure, and Low-Fantasy.
Warning(s): This story is rated 18+ for depictions of violence, strong language, sexual themes, alcohol consumption, and blood.
DEMO (TBA)
Scenario and NSFW asks are welcomed.

You’ve never known anything besides the crystal water surrounding you. Have never felt the sun on your face for hours at a time without being half submerged beneath the waves.
You don’t know why you yearn to see the land in such a way— your father likens it to being your mother’s child— but nothing can ever stop the jolt you get whenever you see a passing ship; hear the boisterous voices from the deck.
The world connected to your own felt like it would forever be out of reach; a simple dream that would never become an actuality.
Until you make a deal that would have your father exploding with a rage…
A deal that would give you legs to find love beyond the waves…
A deal that will bring you salvation if you can fulfill it…
Or bring you damnation if you can’t…

Play as an MC that wishes to see the world up above; is it everything like you’ve imagined?
Make a deal with a sea sorcerer that can have damaging influences on your future. Or possibly it’ll be the best thing that ever happened to you.
Interact with a variety of people as you get involved with what humans call “courting”.
Get used to the world up above as you try to find your true love.
Meet the wondrous beasts known to humans as horses (and even befriend your very own) as people try to woo you (and you try to woo them).
Customizable MC: name, gender, appearance, sexuality, and a smattering of other things that could crop up.
Romance 1 of 5 possible options; from a dashing rogue to the very individual that you made the deal with.
Will you be reminded of the castle back home in Atlantis? With all of the double talk and shadowed intentions?
Will you find your true love?
Or will you fail and pay the price?

Edward/Elizabeth Bolton [M/F] - The Heir
28 [6’3” | Crystalline Blue Eyes | Raven Black Hair]
One of the most eligible individuals within the season. An individual that has never paid anyone— besides polite conversation— any attention. That is, of course, until they spot you from across the room. The smile that lit up their face could illuminate the entire room; you might just be the thing they’ve always been looking for you. As they might be the thing you’ve been searching for too.
“I couldn’t believe my eyes when I first saw you, darling.” The words are said softly; barely a breath of air between you both. “I know how that must sound but from the first moment I saw you I knew. I knew you were it for me. My eyes adored you from then on but my soul and heart are the ones that have fallen in love with you.”
Richard/Regina Axton [M/F] - The Soldier
31 [5’9” | Light Green Eyes | Dark Brown Hair]
A highly decorated officer within the Royal Navy; they don’t often come to court but this season was different. They finally wanted to settle down and build a life with the person they love most. Having, a slightly naive, hope that they’d fine that very person within this very season. Hoping that they’d find someone who’ll love them and not their station in life. You might be the answer to their silent prayers.
“I know that I’m not everyone’s first pick,” they murmur softly, gently cupping your cheek in their hand. “But I hope that you know that you’ll always be mine. No matter what I’ll always be there for you.”
Henry/Helena Hale [M/F] - The Flirt
29 [6’0” | Hazel Eyes | Golden Blonde Hair]
Heartthrob and heartbreaker is a common comparison when it comes to the elusive Hale Heir; an individual that hasn’t let anyone near them— except for promises of a good time— since the accident seven years before. Will you be able to crack the shell— comprised of witty remarks, salacious smiles, and sly jokes— or will they forever remain an enigma to you?
“I don’t fall in love, don’t you get that?” The statement is practically hissed out as they turn away from you; one of their hands running through their curls. “I don’t do roses and moonlit dinners. I don’t do happily ever afters but God do I want to do that with you.”
Scott/Scarlett Reid [M/F] - The Scotsman
28 [5’11” | Blue-Green Eyes | Dark Auburn Hair]
An individual that was almost as new to the court season as you were. Hailing from a little town within Scotland; they find all of the intricacies of the people within the court to be quite amusing. With a warm smile, a welcoming air, and a genuine compassion for those around them, you weren’t surprised that many were quite taken with them already. Would you be the one to gain their attention?
“I may not have a lot of money, dearest one.” The admission, although you were well aware of the fact beforehand, causes them to pause slightly; the slightest furrowing of their brow becoming more pronounced. “But, I promise you that as long as I have you I could never be poor. You’re all the treasure I could ever ask for and more.”
Caelum/Caelya Lancaster [M/F] - The Sorcerer
??? [6’6” | Silver Eyes | Platinum Blonde Hair]
You’ve heard whispers your entire life about the magical entity that even your father fears; an entity that can make dreams come true as easily as they can turn them into nightmares. When you first meet them you weren’t expecting the being that greeted you. The chilling gaze, saccharine smile, and husky purr meshing into a package that could only ever be likened to them, which is why you could spot them so easily from across the ballroom.
“If you fulfill our deal, my little star, then you’ll live happily ever after with whatever creature you meet up above. But—” Their grin turns into a devious smirk as they lean closer; eyes flashing with warning as their voice drops to a low husk. “If you can’t then you’ll be mine and I don’t plan on letting you go.”

So, I’ve just recently started getting into Interactive Fiction, and I was wondering if you have any recommendations? So far, I’ve only played A Mage Reborn and Body Count, and I’m wondering if there’s any (along those veins, maybe?) that I should check out!
hi!! welcome to the community! :) i love both of those IFs <3
i do have some recs for you based on what i've played and enjoyed, so these all have demos or are in progress. it’s not exhaustive by any means, but here we go! in alphabetical order:
a tale of crowns: a high fantasy romance with middle eastern roots. you play as the newest crown of the empire of arsur. incredible world-building, wonderfully nuanced characters, and one of my all-time fave IFs. (*if you decide to play atoc, make sure you engage respectfully in character creation, using the resources the author has put together.)
advenio: the player-character (pc) is posing as a knight in order to avenge the murder of their parents and community. fascinating exploration of gender dynamics and the premise has me super hyped for more.
attollo: a cyber-noir thriller set in a walled city off the coast of the atlantic that’s been a victim of a nuclear disaster. the pc ends up there in the process of searching for their missing sibling. it's like 90% of my brain rn lmao but in short: compelling world-building and very fun narration.
blood moon: pc is a werewolf whose pack just moved into a new city and finds themselves pulled into other supernatural politics. great found-family dynamics and endearing characters.
echoes: a mystery/horror short story in which you wake up in a strange house not remembering how you got there or much of anything at all. echoes is doing something new in the IF medium and i can't wait to read more.
the exile: you play as the exiled half-mythosi (demon, gorgon, phoenix, or wolf) commander of the kingdom of plaithus following a grisly inexplicable incident three years earlier. so much variation to explore and vivid characters.
faith of gods: you play as the augur, a human haunted by unsettling visions and the only one of your kind, searching for answers to an incomplete prophecy. evocative writing, so many variations, and layers upon layers of symbolism.
the golden harp: an adventure tale in which pc, in an attempt to start a new life, accidentally stows away on a pirate ship. engaging narration and compelling characters.
the nameless: a fantasy story in which you play as a sheevra, loosely based on the fey, investigating the disappearance of a neighbouring sheevra clan in a world being drained by the mortalis (humans). beautiful world-building and writing.
project hadea: in a futuristic setting, you’re an elite operative of a private contracting firm with an AI implanted in your brain having to navigate a planetary invasion. one of the most distinct pc voices i've read, fast-paced, excellent world-building and characters.
redsugarsociety: you’re a hitman undercover with your former high school friend and crime-lord-gone-good to stop a scheme by the city’s elite. thrilling and fun with a cast of characters i can’t wait to learn more about.
scout: an apocalypse story: you are a scout in a post-apocalyptic community, looking for signs of life with your team leader and bff, but what you find is not what you expect. i recommend this to anyone just getting into IF: it’s dialogue-driven, has some of my fave characters, and it moves quickly.
speaker: a modern fantasy midwestern-gothic tale in which your twin sister is a seer and you are a speaker, the only one who can voice and interpret her visions of the future. great found-family vibes against a fun and unique setting.
swan song: loosely inspired by the story of tchaikovsky’s ballet, swan song reinvents leir and odile, and you play as the white swan. very magical atmospheric writing and a cool pc customisation approach.
when twilight strikes: you’re a human acting as a supernatural bounty hunter in nyc when your boss goes missing. teaming up with your friends, coworkers, and (reluctant) supernatural team members (including a bounty of yours), you go searching for him. new takes on classic tropes (e.g. enemies to lovers) and great character dynamics.
you live and fern: a slice-of-life romance story about you and your friends working on an online nature channel. this literally feels like a warm hug, i cannot recommend it enough for people who want to read to relax!
other resources for you: my beloved @/sysba has a much more comprehensive list of IF and VN recs here. if you aren’t following @/interact-if, go check them out! it’s a great resource for finding new stories and keeping up-to-date with ongoing projects.

How would companions react to a severely injured Inquisitor? (Incl. romances)
Sad stuff to make you sad... also, I never say the Inquisitor doesn't die at the end of these, so if you wanna be even sadder. . . . . . . anyway!
CW: mention of injury, blood, and death.
Warriors
Cassandra
Cassandra reacts quickly, applying pressure to your injured torso as she counts your hasty, ragged breaths.
"You will not die here, you understand me?" She refuses to lose another friend, especially not you. Not after everything you've been through together. She will never forget how you helped her.
Cassandra Romanced
She panics. She can't breathe. She can't think. She needs you.
But her instincts are still sharp. Apply pressure, apply the tourniquet, slow the bleeding. Her hands shake over yours, as she chants a prayer to her Maker, her faith strong but shaken.
"Please, Maker, please, don't kill them."
Blackwall
Blackwall is one of the first of your party to respond, his instincts kicking in immediately. He can slow the bleeding, but can't do much else. Instead, he helps the others however he can, quietly speaking to you as you bleed.
But a part of him wants to tell you everything. He wants to finally tell you the truth about who he is, and all he has done, before it's too late. How selfish, he thinks.
Blackwall Romanced
He collapses to your side, his eyes locked on yours as others begin work to slow the bleeding. He's lost, panicked, and thinking of the first night he held you. Warm skin, rough stubble, he'll never forget the way your touch felt.
Then, he snaps back to reality. He holds your face, damp with blood and rain. Heads pressed together, he whispers "Stay with me."
The Iron Bull
The loud and powerful Bull is quiet. He's no healer, but he's saved people from worse than this. Despite that, he can't look at you right now, instead he stares at the wound on your stomach, helping the others who fix you up.
When the bleeding slows, and only then, does he look at you. He smiles a weak smile, "How're you feeling Boss?"
The Iron Bull Romanced
All of your enemies meet their end, the Iron Bull crushed them beneath him. They deserve this, they all deserve this. He's never felt anger like this. He thinks of Vasaad, the Tal-Vashoth, and the poisoned children, all eclipsed by the rage he feels now.
He chose his Chargers. He chose to be Tal-Vashoth. And, he chose you. But now you were fading away.
And then, he's quiet. Once the threat is gone he holds your hand in his, the other hand on your pulse. "Hang on, Kadan," he whispers, a tear beginning to fall, "I'm here."
Rogues
Sera
"Shit!" she yells, her arrow finding another templar's face before she runs to your side. She watches the others as they tend to your wounds, mumbling profanities under her breath.
"Don't be a shit, you're not allowed to die, not now!" She can't think straight, nothing is making sense to her anymore. You were meant to be invincible, you have to be. She won't believe anything else.
Sera Romanced
No. No, no, no. Not now, not her Inquisitor, her Inky. She drops to your head and holds your face. You raise your arm, weak and shaking, and wipe her tears away.
"Please," she sobs, her walls breaking down as she is unable to hide her emotions, "please don't leave me."
Cole
He's the first to notice that you're hurt, it ripples through him as the blade ripples through you. He screams for the others as he throws himself by your side.
"You're memorising them, their face, voice, touch, everything in this moment. You think you're dying." He holds your hand, "I'm here, please stay here."
Varric
He's never been much of a healer, but he could talk. While the others work desperately to save you, Varric sits by you. His hand on your chest, he asks you simple questions to see if you're still there.
But he's terrified. Every breath you take, he thinks it's your last. He's counting them, he has to. He needs those physical signs that you're alive.
Mages
Vivienne
Calm and graceful, Vivienne begins to work immediately, her hands dancing over your skin. "You'll be okay, darling," she's casting spells, sparks dancing around her hands, "I've got you."
But it's a lie. It's all a lie. Madame de Fer is barely breathing as she works, her skilled hands up holding her facade. Oh dear, she thinks, she's come to care for you more than she realised. And now, it could be too late.
Solas
Without speaking he begins his work, practical hands moving carefully over your damaged torso. He's calmer than the others, but there's something stirring underneath.
He's angry. Furious. How could they have done this!? Who would hurt you, someone he cared for, someone who fought to save the world!? Who would ever put you in this position, how could-
"Oh..."
Solas Romanced
And right then, he felt the whole world change.
He worked carefully on you, batting away the prying hands of others. They were not enough for you now, but he was. He could save you, he knew he could. He had to. This was his fault, after all.
"Vhenan, ir abelas."
Dorian
Dorian lands next to you, his hands beginning to work over the wound. He's not as skilled in healing magic as Solas, or Vivienne, but he can heal your minor wounds.
It was probably better that way, he was panicked and frightened. You were his closest friend, you had been with him through so much, and now he might lose you. "Inquisitor," he tried to think of something funny to say, something to make you smile, but he couldn't. There was nothing to smile about.
Doran Romanced
"No!" He shrieks, his hands gripping your shoulders. He begins sobbing as the others work on your torn stomach, his fingertips tracing your jawline.
He thinks of your future with him, a future he fantasized about. Would you go to Tevinter with him? Would you build a little house with him? Would you marry him?
"I would," you whisper.

Fantasy is never as strange as Real Life.
Real life is weird as fuck, especially things that you don’t necessarily pay attention to/show up on your daily radar. You know what there aren’t enough of in D&D imo? Fungus enemies. Let’s fix that shit.

This is a weird little fungus known as Clathrus Archeri, aka the Devil’s Fingers or the Octopus Stinkhorn. It starts out in an egg-like sac before bursting free of it. It then spreads its ‘fingers’ and waits. The inner lining of the fingers is coated with a sticky black gooey substance. “Why would that be?” you ask? Because this thing reeks of rotting flesh and attracts flies, which then get stuck on the goo, liquefied, and digested. Metal.
STEP 1: THINK OF A COOL ASS NAME
Here’s the thing: Real life has given us that as well. BUT! We have options. Clathrus Archeri Devil Finger Octopus Stinkhorn… How to combine this? Well fun fact: Clathrus is the genus of this particular fungus which means… THERE ARE OTHER TYPES OF FUNGUS THAT DO A SIMILAR THING. You know what that means? Multiple creatures.
Clathrus is in.
Archeri Devil Finger Octopus Stinkhorn… We don’t want to use Archeri because that’s just the thing’s real life name and isn’t crazy enough. BUT… let’s use Devil Finger because that sounds metal as shit and gives everyone at the table an immediate idea of what this thing does.
Clathrus Devil-finger it is.
STEP 2: THINK OF COOL ASS ABILITIES
It bursts open into long finger-type appendages? REACH.
It grows 4-7 appendages? MULTIATTACK.
It’s covered in black goo? GRAPPLE ABILITY.
It liquefies insects? ACID DAMAGE.
Smells like Rotting Flesh? CON SAVE VS CONDITION.
This is a fantasy game? MAKE IT LARGE.
STEP 3: ABILITY SCORES, LANGUAGES, ETC.
All of this is arbitrary and depends on how high a CR you want the creature to have. SO FUCK IT GO BIG OR GO HOME.
HP: HIGH AC: LOW STR: GOOD DEX: SHIT CON: DECENT INT: ENOUGH TO EAT WIS: NOPE CHA: LOL
ATTACKS PER TURN: HOW MANY ARMS DOES IT HAVE? ROLL FOR IT.
ATTACK AND DAMAGE MODIFIERS: HIGH
DAMAGE PER ATTACK: BLUDGEONING, PRETTY DECENT. PLUS GRAPPLE EFFECT ON SUCCESS. ACID DAMAGE ON GRAPPLED TARGETS. SAVE FOR HALF DAMAGE.
EXTRA STUFF: If you really want to get weird, give it telepathy, but it only speaks Infernal (but because it’s telepathy people understand it, even if they don’t speak it. Let’s also give it Blindsight so that it can see its meals. Yup.
WHAT DO WE END UP WITH?!
STEP 4: MAKE UP SOME COOL ASS LORE
The Clathrus Devil-Finger is a strange mushroom that grows in the deepest parts of forests, and damp, dark areas (like caves, or the Underdark). The Devil-Fingers grow slowly over time, sapping nutrients from the surrounding area until they grow to an enormous size. They grow in an egg-like sac, camouflaged to appear as nothing more than a boulder. Once they reach full size however, nutrients from the soil don’t provide enough sustenance, and so they burst from their sac and split a large number of ichor covered tentacle-like appendages (typically between 4 - 7, but some have been noted to have up to a dozen). The full grown Devil-Finger exudes a stench of decaying flesh, attracting to it all types of scavengers and pests. It uses its appendages to slam down on these creatures, crushing smaller prey instantly, and ensnaring larger prey in its sticky ichor. The trapped creatures are slowly liquefied by the acid laced ichor, and absorbed into the fungus. It is not uncommon to encounter Otyugh, Swarms of Rats, Giant Vultures, or other such creatures when there is a Clathrus Devil-Finger in the area. Because of the increased presence of these aggressive carrion crawlers, it’s not unheard of for fatigued adventurers to get overwhelmed and never be heard of again. Particularly old specimens have even been rumored to be able to communicate with sentient prey, luring them close with dark whispers of promises of power or riches, though this has never been confirmed.
STEP 5: SCAR YOUR PARTY
I never advocate for a DM to directly try and kill your party, after all, this is a fun game meant to be a collaborative story telling experience, but that doesn’t mean that the story doesn’t have any close calls, dark twists, or breath stealing moments. Use your new big bad ass monster to fuck your party up, but be careful to make sure they can survive the encounter, if only barely. THIS IS A TOUGH ENEMY, BUT DEFINITELY KILLABLE, AND DEFINITELY INTERESTING.

Familiars
Witches sometimes have familiars, otherwise known as a spirit, that supports them by aiding them in magickal works. Usually a feline is mostly associated with the witch, and some superstitions believed a witch could transform into a cat. In this day and age, a familiar can be any pet that belongs to the witch. The connection between the witch and their pet is special.
Most all witches have a love for animals, as they do for all living things. Witches understand the importance of the animal kingdom in general. Always stay in tune with the vibrations of your animals so you can know if they are sick or in need.
Feathered Friends
Blackbird
Within Wicca, the blackbird is a cherished thing, and thought to be extremely psychic. If a blackbird sings for you, and looks you straight in the eye, know that love is on its way to you!
Blue Tit
This little bird brings happiness and new of birth/weddings. If these birds are around your garden, you’ll have an abundance of goods. If you see a blue tit scruffy and bedraggled, blow it a kiss and it will live another year.
Crow
Spiritual people attract the crow the most. Wiccans hold the crow as a spiritual messenger. They are very intelligent creatures, and a lot of individuals are very superstitious about them. Sometimes on tarot cards you will see a crow perched on the shoulder of a witch. Throw out some corn and they will hang around your house.
Cuckoo
When the spring finally gets here, and you hear the first cuckoo, make a wish and it will be granted. This bird is good luck and to see one means that you will have more money coming to your life.
Finch
The truth seeker. Tell it your troubles and it will fly away with your problems, leaving them to disappear within the clouds. It will also ruffle it’s feathers if you’re not being true to yourself.
Magpie
Do not listen to the bad sayings about the magpie. Wiccans consider the magpie just as useful as any other aggressive bird. Chinese witches say they are half raven, half dove and very beautiful. The spiritually blessed individuals attract the magpie most. If you see one in your garden, you’ll know your home and property are protected.
Owl
The great fortune-teller. All the secrets of the universe are said to be within the owl. Speak aloud to the owl and ask your questions. If it hoots once, the answer will be no. If it hoots twice, the answer will be yes. If you so happen to have an owl enter your house, it is a VERY bad omen. If you see its image on a window where it might have accidentally collided with the glass, there is news of death.
Pheasant
This is the bird of protection against dangers, especially for younger individuals. If there is a child in the home, and a pheasant is spotted on the property, it is believed that the child will always be protected from danger. Some witches will sew the feathers of a pheasant onto their attire or hats.
Robin
In Christianity, the robin is believed to have gained their red breast from the blood of Jesus after it plucked the deepest thorn from Jesus’ brow while dying on the cross. If you speak to a robin while outside doing things, it may follow you around. If you have a regular visitor in your garden, you are very lucky. However, if it comes into the house it portends some sad news or even news of death.
Sparrow
If a sparrow flies at you, know to look after your health better.
Sparrow Hawk
If this bird makes eye contact with you, its trying to tell you news. If you tune into the sparrow hawk you will find it’s understanding and knowledge.
Swallow
Your property will be protected against bad weather if a swallow nests in the eaves of your house.
Woodpecker
This guardian of all trees is associated with magickal powers. Use the dust caught from a hole of a woodpecker in spells for happier times.
Wren
This bird is a myth thought to be the king of birds. If this bird flies in your home, it will leave magick and good luck. If a wren appears to you, something wonderful will happen.
Furry Friends
Badger
This animal is a lunar animal and part of the weasel family. Lunar animals are magickal and associated with the lunar goddess. There are many lunar animals. The badger has supernatural powers and can sense when it’s in the presence of a witch. Badgers can sense magickal ley lines. These lines are thought to be paths of spiritual energy running through the earth along which ancient monuments were built and sacred sites aligned.
Bat
The bat can usually be found wherever a witch resides. According to Chinese folklore, if a bat nests under your roof, it is a sign of better things to come.
Dogs
Dogs are incredibly psychic! Because of this, they can easily detect humans emotions. They are also sensitive to weather changes.
Frogs, Toads, and Newts
A lot of garden, or green, witches who are into magickal lore and medicinal properties of herbs, will keep an amphibian as a pet. Frogs and toads are lucky to have around. However, if one should be killed or found dead on your property, then sad news of the loss of a friend is to come.
Hare
Another lunar creature like the badger. They represents fertility and new beginnings for many religions. Many witches have images of the hare on jewelry. Star-gazing hares are thought to attract the full moon and stars, and are purported to be the most magickal as they are moon worshipers. If you see one, very good luck.
Horse
The horse is the only creature that may have an issue with witches. This beast is very sensitive and senses vibrations differently from ours. Sometimes Wiccan vibrations can spook a horse. The horse sometimes can be neigh too loud or rear up. This is because the horse simply doesn’t understand the vibrations its sensing and should be handled carefully. A horse can settle down and get used to a witch. Don’t take it personal. Be patient and take time with a horse.
Rabbit
Like the hare, a rabbit is lunar. If found in your garden, it could mean news of a baby for you or someone close to you.
Insightful Insects
Bee
The much treasured bee is a very important insect to our ecosystem. Some witches will keep beehives because of their love for honey often used in healing potions. Bee witches, or witches or keep bees, make sure correct flowers and plants are always available in the garden. Never swear in front of a bee for this thought to weaken them through the presence of negativity. If one flies into the palm of your hand, legend has it that you’ll soon have money. If a bee doesn’t like your energy, it will sting you. NEVER EVER KILL A BEE!!
Hornet or Wasp
Interestingly enough, you can use telepathy with these insects. If you tune in right, they will do as you ask. If they aggravate you, speak firmly and say “please leave.” It will usually obey, and if you get stung instead, it’s a warning that there may be a person around you who you shouldn’t trust. Jealousy is associated with hornets also, so be on guard.
Grasshopper
If you are face-to-face with the grasshopper, you will have to make decisions about journeys that lie ahead of you.
Ladybug
This lovely little bug is also known as the ladybird beetle. It is a witch’s little familiar and if one lands on you, many blessings will come. Hold it in your cupped hand for a few moments and tell it your secrets. Then make a wish and let it go.
Spider
Witches attract spiders the most. They run over clothes, land in your hair, and even creep into bed with you! It is said to be the only living creature on the planet that can understand human language. Some witches will talk to spiders a lot, or put them in their pocket for a moment to increase their wealth. If you kill a spider intentionally, you will have bad luck and a year of hardship. If a tiny spider finds you, circle it three times over your head, and let if drop into your hair. Leave it there to find its way out to increase your money energy three times over.
The Notorious Cat
This animal is most closely associated with witches today. Many witches have friendly felines as familiars and many believe them to be psychic. In the day and age when witches were burned, their cats were often burned along with them or just killed outright. The Egyptians were often buried with their cats for help to the journey into the spiritual realm. Sometimes your cat will hunt for you and bring you presents. Thank you for their offering, then dispose of it (if its a dead animal) privately so you do not offend the feline.
