he’s grateful she allows the subject to pass for now. the pair had been through so much already that there never seemed to be time to talk about past traumas. and, well, he didn’t want to burden her. it seemed like so many of the people he lived through those memories with saw him as an extra load to carry. jeremy wouldn’t add her to the list. “i thought about going on an all-almond diet,” he begins to read from over her shoulder. “but that’s just nuts.” the audible groan he lets out has jeremy chuckling immediately after at his own reaction. “yep! this book was written for you. and i, as your audience, cannot wait to boo you off the stage for days to come.” with an arm wrapped around her shoulder, he squeezes her in a half-hug. just a sign of appreciation for her, for being there. for actually sticking around when everyone else in his life leaves. he really has no idea what goes on in her head sometimes, and that isn’t always concerning. just some of the time. “of course i thought about you.” his words, so matter of fact, as if there was never any doubt. “i care about you, ellie.”

she wants to believe him , he’s given her no reason to doubt . everything and anything jeremy has ever promised her , said to her , he’d come through with . the way his words form , he seems absolutely certain of and she wanted to tell him he shouldn’t say things like that , tell him that everyone leaves eventually , but what was the point in ruining a moment that settled just enough . “ you say that , but you’ll change your mind after i get halfway through this book . “ voice playful , a half true littering the joke she begins to make . she shuffles where she’s seated , looking around the woods for a moment before eyes gaze back at him . “ you have to remember that you brought this back for me and you’re not allowed to take it back . it is your own fault you gave me a pun book that you know i’m going to read . “ it’s taken a minute , but there’s a calm slowly setting in her heart . “ how long do you think we can stay here ? is there another place close by ? any chance for a real bed soon ? “

“i’m, sorry, el. i didn’t mean to freak you out. honest. it’s just,” a exhale passes through his lips as he considers the memories that would keep him awake for watch tonight. “–it’s something i had to do on my own. you didn’t miss much, and i’m back here, right as rain.” he’d rather skip the subject of where he’s been and focus on this small victory. his eyes fall back to the book’s familiar, warn cover. “don’t say i never gave you anything.” he leans over and nudges her shoulder with his own. after the world ended, jeremy had forgotten how to smile. but running with ellie, having someone to look after and care for… he has a purpose again. “well, go on then; let’s hear one.”
