Ragatha projecting her feeling of her mom's abuse onto Jax, makes me wonder if she may have ruined Ribbit's funeral for him...

Like imagine, its his turn to say a few words and she keeps cutting him off with:

"Oh please, you guys always caused us trouble!"

"Why would you bring that up!? Only you two found it funny!"

Or when it's her turn to speak, its passive aggressive comments:

"We were alot closer before, until you started hanging out with Jax more..."

"I would have been able to help, if you would have just talked to me"

Jax's animosity towards her seems to be built up. Similar to ragatha, he has his own unhealthy ways of dealing with uncomfortable feelings.

It makes her apologizing here more significant. She could mean her actions from way before stargazing (which I hope not because that's not a real apology) but it clearly meant alot to jax that she did.

They were all probably a close trio. But Ragatha's jealousy ruined it. Why would jax still want to be close to ragatha if he really hated her? (Could be she was just the easiest to be around in this moment but humor me lol)

Jax seemed to already have known about her back story from his reaction here too. Or understands that someone who acts like Ragatha's comes from an abusive upbringing.

And the implication in this scene that there was room for ragatha to go with Jax and Pomni but she chose not to. She was probably thinking "What's the point? I'm clearly getting left behind again."

In conclusion , I still love bunnydoll even more with how complex and toxic their doomed ship relationship and characters are lol.

Mini Analysis- Ragatha and Jax

Something tells me Jax’s initial plan was to use Pomni to make Ragatha jealous but ended up making an actual friend which is very sweet considering his last real friend was, basically, her beta concept as many have pointed out.

But also, it’s a little funny how obsessed he is with Ragatha without realizing it. He can’t bring himself to acknowledge that he genuinely cares for her. And why would he? She probably took care of him for a bit when he first joined, but he probably picked up on her placating attitude, “If you tell someone they’re loved and appreciated everyday it just…it kind of loses all meaning”. This, plus his coping mechanisms and her, possibly, botched attempt at consoling him when Ribbit abstracted drove them apart. Remember, Ragatha entered the circus before him— she’s been there, quite literally, his entire life. Yet he can’t bring himself to admit that he’s attached to her especially after going through the grief of Ribbit.

Episode 4 & 5 have confirmed that they know the other is constantly putting up a mask. In Episode 4, Ragatha asks, “Can’t you find a way to relieve yourself that doesn’t involve hurting people?” And in Episode 5, she says, “…it’s better than turning her into some insensitive jerk who deflects everything…and then you just act like you never do anything wrong and everybody loves you when in reality you just fuck everything up for everyone else” (oof the projecting in this scene; surprised she didn’t call him ‘mom’)

Likewise, Jax has multiple occasions throughout epsidode 5, most notably “I think she tries way too hard…Like why are you always pretending everything’s always fine”, “Geez Raggy, just let yourself be mean sometimes. It’s funny!”, and “oh right, I should force to be happy all the time instead, right?”

You could argue Jax wants to be friends with Ragatha, but the genuine side of her that he knows experiences sadness, pain, and fear. I don’t believe he wants her to abstract, and in fact he might want to save her. It’s possible Ribbit might have acted similarly to Ragatha but was a little more genuine in his positivity (akin to Pomni), and that could have been their downfall. Ragatha means a lot more to Jax than he realized— she matters to him and he hates it.

As for the reverse? I truly don’t believe Ragatha hates Jax— perhaps irritated and annoyed, but not hate. Instead, I think she is heavily projecting her mom onto him as mentioned with the quote above. I think she has a hard time disconnecting the two in her mind given that he has berated her in every episode and just recently guilt tripped her into apologizing (granted he was probably joking and didn’t think she actually would). But unlike her mom who has authority over her, Jax is a stranger to her and so it’s easier for her to call him out.

It gives some extra weight to when she said “I like hate you, but I don’t want you to hate me.” It’s common that a child of parent emotional abuse will have complicated feelings towards their parent— the contempt for treatment but the yearning for approval and love. This is something I’ve touched on before, but to reiterate: Ragatha cannot stand how irresponsible and nasty he can be towards others (I don’t think she cares if he picks on her tbh), but she needs his approval, and now we can speculate that’s it’s because it’s the closest thing to getting her mom’s approval.

I really loved this scene because Jax completely froze and didn't stop looking her way even after she left, he was frozen and lost in his thoughts while Pomni was left in a very awkward position because of the tension between those two oh i hate them

Jax assumed he knew the full truth of who Ragatha is as a person, he assumed that he could taunt her into becoming like him, as prideful as him. He most likely assumes everyone is like that.

This is how he talks about her

That is how anyone talks about someone they don't know on a deeper level but they still feel suspicious of or simply don't like. He assumes she's pretending all the time and that her kindness has no meaning. He assumes he knows her.

And when she apologized, when she admitted and even went back to her own mistake from earlier and mentioned it herself despite her pride being hurt (something he would not do about his own mistakes because of his pride and the persona he puts on)

When she did that she immediately shattered the perception and narrative he had built in his mind about her, that deep inside she was mean and everything she was was a farse. She actually faced her flaws and apologized and proved him wrong and he has no idea how to deal with that

I'm thinking about Scott and Jimmy again.

Jimmy genuinely thinks Scott is invincible on some level. He always expects Scott to have everything he needs, always expects Scott to have enough to give, always expects Scott to be prepared, and level headed, and competent, Jimmy is intimidated by Scott (not that he lets it get in his way, jimmy is the bravest man alive), Jimmy doesn't know what it's like to live in a world without Scott (scott always outlives him, and jimmy has only seen scott red once), Jimmy is genuinely shocked and disbelieving when Scott falters even a little bit (remember how he reacted to mumbo's kill on scott in wild life?). Scott is consistent and competent and in control, Scott doesn't falter, Scott doesn't doubt, Scott doesn't fear anything, and Scott doesn't die.

And it's so ironic. I know I already talked about this, in fewer words, but it sticks with me constantly, how Jimmy doesn't know how hard Scott broke over him.

Even before Jimmy died in Third Life for the record, he had more power with Scott than he realized. Scott loved him, and Scott made so many compromises for Jimmy, so many little moments where Jimmy got his way and never realized how scared Scott was for him or their life together. Even when they'd argue, when Scott would beg Jimmy to be more careful, or yell at him for pulling them into a war Scott didn't want, even when Scott was afraid, he was good at putting on a stable face, good at hiding any negative emotions, and I don't think Jimmy ever really realized just how much Scott bit back to follow him.

It wasn't until after Jimmy died that Scott's normal defenses shattered, and Jimmy..didn't see it. Jimmy didn't see the grave Scott dug for him, didn't see Scott snappy and shaky and out of it, didn't see Scott swinging his sword at anyone and everyone, didn't see Scott so grief stricken he couldn't contain waves of despair and rage, didn't see the way people whispered, "He's..dazed..today", didn't see the bloodthirst, or the recklessness, didn't see Scott get himself killed and immediately come back to where he'd died, didn't see Scott get himself caught, didn't see Scott get chased through the forest, hunted like prey, literally helpless to do anything, powerless, slaughtered because he was, shockingly enough, an easy kill.

I never stop thinking about it actually. Does Jimmy know how much Scott was willing to do for him? How much Scott conceded for him? How much Scott valued him? How much Scott genuinely loved him? Does Jimmy even realize how human Scott is, beneath his strength and confidence and skill? Does Jimmy realize that Scott can die? That Scott can break? That Scott broke over him?

I'm not normal guys.

Joel was happy at first, he finally had someone to suffer through the games with! Sure maybe they were forced together but Joel still took it as a win. For the first time he wouldn’t be alone…

Etho was having mixed feelings, sure Joel seemed like a great guy but Etho had his own issues. Alliances and betrayals from past games, words unsaid and promises broken. He was unsure but what could he do? Plus Joel seemed so…happy, very different from the maniac Etho had encountered before.

The two were forced together, opposites that somehow couldn’t stay apart. Sure sometimes were rough, and the bloodlust reached both of them eventually, but they had fun. Even when it all crashed and burned they would remember…through burning bridges, cherry trees, colorful cities, and eventually one would remember every detail. Even if the other didn’t.
