it's important to know that the byford dolphin incident (if you don't know what it is don't look it up unless you're alright with learning about gruesome details) was not caused by human error, it was caused by a mechanical error and lack of safety equipment that the company (dolphin drilling) and the norwegian government knew could prevent accidents like that. they were sued and lost 26 years later, and had to pay compensation to the families. they had to wait 26 years for that closure and compensation. they covered up their negligence by blaming the accident on one of the victims. this is all on wikipedia. it's another case of corporate greed and regulations being written in blood

the byford dolphin was laidup in 2016 and scrapped in 2019. holy shit. imagine being a saturation diver and they tell you you're going on the fucking byford dolphin. I would literally quit on the spot. surely they had difficulty hiring people to work there. I know the horrors of capitalism exist but I think the horrors of the byford dolphin might be worse. if I was a saturation diver "no byford dolphin" would be on my contract. I would go to the union and say "don't let them put me on the byford dolphin". genuinely how was it not defunct the second true crime became a thing. how did they get people to work on the oil rig where "they exploded a guy from negligence" is an understatement. how did they not just cut their losses and start over. how
