My Mortal Soul

“I could not possibly,” Monica Joan declared. “My soul is only clinging to my physical manifestation by a thread.”

“I’m sorry you’re not feeling well,” Julienne said gently, coming to sit on the side of her sister’s bed. “Is there something in particular the matter?” When their elder sister had not appeared in the chapel for Lauds, Julienne had seen the weary look on Ada’s face and offered to go up instead.

For as long as Julienne had known Monica Joan, and she suspected long before that, she had been something of an eccentric. She was fond of ancient cultures, astronomy and astrology but increasingly she seemed to not only be fascinated but truly believe what she was saying.

“I am besieged by an evil temper. The wind must be from the east.”

“It might be,” Julienne said. “But I suspect that has little to do with what ails you.”

The Journey Home

“Sister?” Julienne started from the trance she’d slipped into at the gentle hand on her arm. “You look ready for bed,” Nurse Crane observed as she sat down next to her on the benches that were lining the wall of the village hall. 

“I will admit that I am not perhaps designed for such late night festivities,” she admitted. The ceilidh was a joyous thing and it was an honour to have been invited, but Julienne was finding the noise and the light a little much. 

“Is something the matter,” the other woman asked, offering her the teacup she was holding. 

“I’m sure it’s nothing,” Julienne said, shaking her head.

“You still haven’t shaken the last of that bug have you?” Phyllis asked, her gaze becoming more pointed. 

“I will admit that I’m a little weary,” she admitted. “But nothing that a good night’s sleep will not resolve.”

“I won’t say I’m not looking forward to my own bed,” Phyllis admitted as they watched the others dancing. “But if you want to make an early exit…” 

 It was a sorely tempting idea, not least as Julienne’s head was beginning to pound in time with the music.

As it happens, the Swedish version is running on our TV service with burnt in subtitles, so I can check!

In our subtitles it’s translated as “slag”, which means punch/strike/slap. So definitely the former. (But I do realise the word also has a meaning in English which may be confusing 😆)

But basically they gave the translation “To not know the difference between love and violence, that every kiss corresponds to a punch.”

Call the Midwife fans, a very important question!

In S1E2, Father Joe says about girls like Mary, "They don't know the difference between love and abuse, never met a kiss that wasn't down payment on a blow."

Does he mean a smack/hit or blowjob? Because the Finnish subtitles say the latter but I always thought it was the former.
