Nick Nelson's "coming out" to Charlie in the ballroom is not just Nick coming out, it's Nick being prepared to admit he has a crush on Charlie, specifically. Nick has no more reason to think Charlie likes him back than Charlie has reason to think Nick likes him.

In fact, arguably Nick has LESS reason, because Charlie has been looking for signs for MONTHS, whereas Nick has been so busy trying to understand his feelings he's not had time (or experience) looking for signs of reciprocation.

I'm not trying to undersell the risk Charlie took, but Nick was also gambling a friendship, in fact best-friendship, and being outed (even when he didn't understand his own sexuality), all in one go.

He REALLY must have thought Charlie was worth it.
