One thing about Andor, even when it leaves me yearning for more character beats, is that nearly every episode it shows me something I never thought Star Wars could do. There are actors regularly turning in performances that would be career highlights on a prestige network. Pretty much the whole of 2.08 "Who Are You?" is a staggering achievement: I don't know if I've seen such a gripping, harrowing representation of the use of state violence against protesters anywhere in television, let alone in Star Wars. And Mon Mothma's speech in 2.09 "Welcome to the Rebellion"...to frame the truth exiled from the senate as the naming of a genocide - in this moment - on a fucking Disney property! I gasped, and then I cried; it was so astonishing.
I know this season will leave me wanting more. But I'm blown away every time I think about all the ways Andor has stormed past the conventions of its genre to expand what we can see.

Lio Partagaz: I've got to [remembers that the Imperial need for control is so desperate because it is so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear] kill myself.

another rogue one thing that andor finale adds to is orson krennic's Worst Fucking Week Of His Life. he's already overbudget and behind schedule. classified info leaked because security bureau apparently have dogshit personal operational security. the bureau chief just offed himself so there's no one to scapegoat. tarkin is trying to steal credit for his work. vader chokes him if he gets in a pissy mood. he hates his job and his job hates him. he's probably getting a pre-cancerous stress ulcer from all of this. the spemails (space emails) have not found him well.

The fact that we’re only now being shown Kleya’s backstory is such a good choice. Not just because we’re only now—as she’s preparing to kill Luthen—able to understand the full picture of their relationship, but also because of the context it puts her subsequent breakdown in. The way we see Kleya in the safe house is completely opposed to how she’s always been presented. She’s disheveled, frantic, and she’s begging Cassian for help in a way that season one Kleya would never dream of doing—and what her flashback scenes show is that this isn’t the first time she’s been this terrified, it’s not the first time she’s been holed up someplace, thinking of her dead loved ones and dreading being found. The cold, clinical Kleya we usually see isn’t just a mask, it’s who she is, but it’s a version of herself that she’s built up over the course of her time with Luthen and now that he’s gone she’s back to being the girl she was when they first met. The fear she feels in the safe house and the fear she felt hiding in that ship are one and the same—they were both brought on by watching people she loves die, by the empire, and by Luthen Rael.

i truly think the most torturous thing kleya has to get used to on yavin —aside from the living arrangements, aside from carrying her grief, aside from everyone being nice to her all the time, aside from the gaping space of her control centre— is she has to be sincere in her interactions now.
she has to make small talk with strangers and mean it. she has to give constructive criticism and mean it. she has to take compliments on her work and mean it. she has to make connections with people and have it stick and get to know them beyond their utility, their skills, their discretion, their disposability. she has to do all the things she used to do as a facade and be genuine about them.
for so long it's only been her and luthen and her various masks; the customer-first shop assistant, the unnerved and relentless comms monitor, the collected and headstrong logistics manager who makes sure people are calm and where they need to be. and then luthen's gone and she's kept everyone else at arm's length and all of a sudden cassian's seen her panic and melshi's seen her scared and vel's seen her dissociate and it's the emotional equivalent of a nightmare where you're in your underwear in class. she has to accept kindness and aid and affection, all things that she's never been able to give others because she's never been able to afford the risk, has to let them know that she has shortcomings and blindspots and vulnerabilities.
she has to, gods help her, let herself be known.

look star wars is allegedly about war but it is not coherently About War and now. luthen. insanely poignant that the greatest most heroic thing someone can do is be a deserter. be a coward. make it stop. incredible throughline for the franchise all the way down to finn shedding his armor in the desert. Make it stop. and the fact that all of it is because of kleya. Because she couldnt look away. Because he couldnt look away at her not looking away. Because of one angry little girl. all of it… all of it!!!! Her turning to him and asking why cant we MAKE it stop!!!!!!!!!

Kleya risking her life and intel and everything in some crazy one woman op just to mercy kill Luthen was way more powerful than having her rescue him (which would have been impossible) & so in line with “you’re my daughter only when it’s useful”. And it is! useful to the rebellion so he never breaks under interrogation and also possibly the most touching thing i’ve seen on screen this season
anyway Luthen is all she had left and she risked everything to give her adoptive father a good death.
Goddamit
