Beetlejuice in the first movie: I want to get back to the land of the living to terrorize humanity in any way that I can, this weird goth girl is just a means to an end
Beetlejuice in the sequel, who keeps a framed picture of Lydia on his desk: It has been thirty years since I've seen my wife Lydia Deetz, the love of my life, my one and only, my other half, the only woman I’ve ever truly loved, my—
What if Lisa Frankenstein had happened in the world of the novel? What if Victor had caught up with his Creature and it turned out he was in a disgustingly cute relationship with a deranged woman after murdering her evil stepmother? What the hell would he do about that?
thinking about how the heart-shaped gravestone with flowers on it was 100% chosen by taffy. and then the creature added “beloved wife” and took care of it despite her not being truly dead. lisa’s grave is just a monument of love.
i keep thinking abt in lisa frankenstein when she says “u like cool movies and music and stuff, but ONLY for u. u want to be the smart one who likes cool stuff and u don’t want u girlfriend to like cool stuff. do u know how uncool that is ??!!??” which i could talk abt for hrs but i’ll just say she put a lotttttta lame ass men in their place w that
We all agree Lisa Frankenstein is going to be a cult classic but I can’t help but feel like when it becomes popular I’m gonna be like “oh so NOW you like it”
ok, but there are SO many ways to appreciate lisa frankenstein.
Casual Viewing: THIS MOVIE IS SO FUN. It's campy and original and fresh, and so so reverent to (objectively) the best decade to be a teenager, and Lisa is a twisted complex super relatable character, and it's all around a fun movie to watch that isn't super inaccessible or gory. Also diablo cody is THAT GIRL, idc.
Feral Viewing: Queers, goths, trannies, girlfreaks, and murderers (i'm 3/5, tag urself lol) this is OUR movie. Hyperfixate and draw all the fanart and write all the fanfics and theorize and fall in love with side characters and ride or die for creech and lisa. its AMAZING, and you can probably tell which one i am. We all deserve to give or receive bottom surgery and commit totally justified and righteous murders with a hot S/O. We all know some arthouse filmbro douchebag gatekeeper who only wants simple vapid girls so he can hold all the power and interest and "coolness" in the relationship. This is the People's movie.
Cinematic Viewing: Get a notebook and popcorn and a feral viewer friend and Dissect this movie. The sound track is masterful and understated while also complimenting every single scene it's in, at some points even feeling DIEGETIC its so great. The costume design DOESN'T miss. I watched this with my mom and at soooo many points she paused and pulled out her middle and high school yearbook and photo albums to appreciate just how much they got the high 80's fashion correct. This interview with the costume designer really showed the level of care that went into every part of this movie. It's a love letter to the 80's without feeling like it's being ham-handed. AND THE CINEMATOGRAPHY. the little puppets during the credits/creature's origin story? that was such a funky little opening. the color palette in every scene is so cohesive and deliberate and absolutely reflects lisa's journey as a character and individual. Taffy subverting queen-bee evil stepsister tropes, her dad's strange (murderous???) characterization, there's not a single accidental trait in this film.
Empowered Viewing (my favorite): I can't even summarize this myself, because it's not my original thought, but @michaelinprogress made this amazing post about the significance of the axe and how lisa and creature address and reclaim some of lisa's most traumatizing experiences into ones that positively empower her. OR, to some extent and of equal importance, the inherent queer undertones of this movie. Creature getting bottom surgery, this less than traditional romance, lisa's goth transformation mirroring the self-discovery and confidence that often come with transitioning. This is a movie for the unseen, although I don't think we can quite call ourselves that because THIS MOVIES SEES US.
plz plz plz reblog and tell me how else yall love this movie, how this made you Feel, cuz i am Feeling man
All it means when people say “you’re speaking from a place of privilege” is that you’re likely to underestimate how bad the problem is by default because you are never personally exposed to that problem. It’s not a moral judgement of how difficult your life is.
