Week 11
Library Escapades
The library was used as one of the campus polling station and the candidates were greeting everyone that came through the door. Big smiles and eager eyed while wishing us “happy voting” and directing us towards the polling line. And I’m there like
Tumblr media
“Uhm,,,,,, I’m here for a class.”
Moving on, the class was held at Bilik Malawati and,,,, its a room of computers!! With working internet!!! To not waste time, I played with a couple of buzzfeed quizzes while waiting for the lecturer. What we did in this class was look for information and materials for the written assignment. So, online we go!!!! And upstairs, we need real, physical books too for the assignment. So we got all the information needed and that was it. And to achieve all this, I want us all to remember the immortal words of Britney Spears:
You better work, b***h.

Week 11
I took every step with urgency. Putting one foot in front of the other as fast as I could. “I’m gonna be late,” I thought to myself. I managed to get by the crowd by saying “excuse me” and “sorry” till I arrive in front of the room. ‘Bilik Asraf’ was plastered on the see-through door. I can see people on the seats, consciously ignoring the door and paying attention to the front of the class. The lecturer is in. I held the door handle and carefully opened it. With my head down, I entered, with a bunch of other students who were late as well, glanced ed the lecturer, who was abruptly stopped mid-sentence upon our arrival, and I continued to walk and settle in a seat on the third row. The class just started. Phew. The lecturer resumed to talk. “She said to sit in groups,” whispered the person sitting next to me. I looked around for my group members, who happened to come in late as well, and proceeded to switch my seat. “Ok, so we’re going to question and comment on each other’s work today,” said the lecturer. I looked at my group members.

And that’s the story of how I came to class late and we did a whole Q and A session with the class on our Albury assignment. Questions were asked, ideas were exchanged, and several points were made. A+ class. 100% would recommend and come again.

Week 10
Hello all. I skipped a few weeks due to the mid semester break, Deepavali, and cancelled classes😉.
Primary and Secondary Sources
I understand this as the original™ and the knockoff™. Its like KFC and KelFC. Well, actually, its not as simple as that. Its not plagiarising exactly,,,, its more like an extension of the former. Or it has bits and pieces of the former. Ok, for example, the colour red. Its a primary colour because it contains only one pigment. It’s the colour that combines with another primary colour (blue or yellow) to create a secondary colour, like purple, or orange. It’s the originator. The first. The Neil Armstrong of the subject at hand. And secondary sources are an interpretation or critique  of the primary sources. It’s like the story of a friend of your friend. The thing didn’t happen to your friend, but they are telling you as a person who has the first-hand account of the events they didn’t personally witness. There might be tweaks here and there because their perspective is already coloured by their  personal feelings and opinions about the story/events. And that, my friends, is an example of a secondary source.
Anyways, the classroom activity was fun. And stimulating. I admit my group went in one direction but then we had trouble finding the sources so we back paddled and went the other way round but that’s OK! We got through and that is all that matters.

Week 7
Academic Writing Discourse
From what I understand, academic discourse is any discussions that has to do with academia but in writing. I could be wrong but I think that’s about it. Think journal articles or research paper. Can’t go wrong with those. Most of academic writing discourse is formal so, yeah, it can be quite boring. That’s besides the point, the point here is that there are differences in writing between professionals and non-professionals. As a reader and an observer, I can absolutely testify to that. Take my writing as an example. Compare it to a published academician’s. Yes I know, I know. Mine is more entertaining( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°) but theirs have real Content™.
Now lets discuss the language used in journal articles and research papers.
.
.
.
whY IS IT SO HARDddddddddddddd??????????
Tumblr media
I REMEMBER GOOGLING MOST OF THE WORDS IN A PARAGRAPH TO GET AN IDEA OF WHAT IT IS. I know the writers are experts in the field, but please, write to make us non-experts to understand too. I mean, do you want people to read your paper or not????
Also, I’ve come across this one post on academic writers in meme format and the original poster have Very Strong Feelings™ on academic writers who writes incomprehensibly. The link to said post is right here. A take on academic writers, millennial style.

favvvv author/s(writer/s).
This post is a bit late but it’s here now.
As you all can guess from my previous posts, I’m not a fan of non-fictions. The only non-fiction that I liked was my Biology textbook. Sis, let me tell you,,,,, mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell and cells,,,, are interesting as heck. What I do get on board with is fictions. I read a lot of Enid Blyton when I was a child. Only I thought her name was Gnid Buton and that she was a dude. Aaaaahh, being a child. I particularly like her Amelia Jane series. Home-made doll who isn’t store bought, thus, lacks manners. That series was nice. Can’t believe there’s only 4 books in that series. Growing up, I read a lot, like a lot lot of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. It’s funny and it gets me to read so mom just went with it. The series is still ongoing and I still read it till this day cus its what get my little brothers to read too so mom keeps buying ‘em.   I particularly like To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before series by Jenny Han. Lara Jean Song Covey has like 5 crushes throughout her life and she acts on none of ‘em because she’s shy???? and awkward??? and have issues??? Honestly,,, mood. I got the third installation of the series on a travelling day and guess who read it from start to finish on a 7-hour car ride back to her hometown? Yea it’s this girl. Also the books makes me feel all giddy inside I hate it lol. The Alchemist was nice. Short read but very insightful. Oufff and that book that the dying doctor wrote. When Breath Becomes Air!!!!!!! Halfway through the end and I can’t put it down and tears won’t stop flowing lolololl.  I just thank God I was alone. Can you imagine,,, crying, in front of other people? ಥ ͜ʖಥ  Other than that we have The Time Keeper, My Heart and other Black Holes, It Ends With Us, The Roanoke Girls(disturbing read I’ll tell you that), Three Dark Crowns,,,, also,,, I have now realised that I absolutely cannot choose favourites. The books I’ve read was entertaining and for most of it, I looked up the reviews beforehand lololol this girl reads 3 stars and above only sisters. You might ask “Hm,,,, why isn’t Harry Potter in the list??? Is she not a fan of Harry Potter???? People her age like Harry Potter. They read Harry Potter don’t they?” To answer that question, yes, I am a fan and yes, I did read Harry Potter. Actually, I read the first two books and then the movie came out and I’m like,,,,,,, “You know what, I’m just gonna watch the movies.” But since the movies left most parts out and I had to ask mom(since she read the books) to fill the inconsistency in for me, I am now rethinking my decision and is probably going to pick up the book again somewhere in the future. Unimportant, but I’m a Slytherin hehehehehe hiss hiss amigos.
You know what else counts as writing??? Songwriting. It is a form of writing too so I’m just gonna go ahead and mention my fav songwriter/storyteller which is Miss Taylor Allison Swift. Her songs?? Bops. What are feelings you might ask?? Listen to her and you might have an idea. Love Story? An evergreen bop. Ours? I’m not in love but I sure am now. All Too Well? Sis,,, you already know I cried listening to it. Its been 6 years since its release and I’m still crying. The rawness of it, the love, the loss, the pain that she felt. It’s like she picked up a pen when the wound was still raw, still fresh, still bleeding, and girl just went ahead and used the blood as ink. Sis,,,, I just,,,,,,😭😭😭.  💯 would recommend. Beautifully written and painfully honest, a true masterpiece by a legend. And I absolutely CANNOT believe she stashed away the 10-minute version of this song in a drawer ‘somewhere'. I want to be that drawer. I want to be the drawer that safekeeps the extension of an already perfect song. And the live performance at the 2014 Grammys???? THAT WAS EVERYTHING!! “Maybe we got lost in translation, maybe I ask for too much but maybe this thing was a masterpiece till you tore it all up, running scared, I was there, I remember it, all too well. Yeah, you called me up again just to break me like a promise, so casually cruel in the name of being honest, I’m a crumpled up piece of paper lying here, cause I remember it all too well,” YES only the GREATEST BRIDGE EVER!!!! The Golden Gate Bridge is no match to this one and can suck it!(kidding of course, I exaggerate stuff, that bridge is impressive btw) Now let me just,,, slip in a quote from the songstress herself on this song,,,
"I think that happens most when you're missing someone, or you've lost someone, or you're trying to forget someone... And you just don't know how you feel about it. This happened to me one time and I knew that in order to get past it, I needed to write about it, so instead of trying to write what I felt about it, it might be better to just write what happened... because I remembered everything." -Taylor Swift on All Too Well
You have got nothing against Miss Swift, the lyrical genius™ . I know this Tumblr is for class but it is now her stan account too.

Week 5
Schemata learning
The same text may have multiple interpretations. It is because of the meaning that the text gives to a person, to the world and to the text. We all learn literature in high school, we know all about the different interpretations of text by the teacher, the reference books, your peers, bleh until it all becomes a mesh of interpretations and you’re like which one of these interpretations is closest to mine hm I’m going to go with this one.
Funny story about interpretations, so, I watched A Star Is Born(2018) starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper right. If you haven’t seen it skip this paragraph altogether I don’t wanna spoil you and watch A Star Is Born(2018) the songs slaps, hard and it’s really good. So, at the end of the movie, Gaga’s character, Ally, told a friend that the last thing that she told her husband, Jack(Bradley Cooper), was a lie. She mentioned a couple things in their last conversation which are, 1. the European tour is cancelled, 2. the label wants her to focus on the second album, 3. the first album was a huge success and, 4. everything is fine. I watched the movie twice btw because I love hurt and hurting. Sooo,, the first time around I went alone and for the love of God I don’t even know why by ‘lie’ I thought she was talking about the European tour being cancelled. I was all like, “so the concert’s not cancelled??? It’s still on????? Why would she lie about that???? What an odd thing to lie about.” And the frustrating thing about the thought is that I can’t discuss with anybody because none of my friends have seen it and they’re really looking forward to seeing it the following week. So I went with them a week later and they shared their thoughts after and one of em said “She lied about everything being fine huk huk*continues to sob because the ending was super sad*” and I was like WOW that really cleared things up for me. Of course by ‘lie’ Ally meant about everything being fine because EVERYTHING WAS IN FACT,,, NOT FINE!!!! AT ALL. And that’s one example of different interpretations of the same thing.
I feel like my ramblings above is diverting from the topic at hand its like
Tumblr media
anywaysssss,,, activating schemata is relatively easy. Just think of similar things to the things that you get from the text. If the text is talking about big cats, relate it to common big cats that you know like tigers, lions, puma. Schema activated! Easy right? And problems and difficulties can arise during reading. There are a lot of reasons as to why they arise. My usual is that I don’t feel like reading it 🤪. However, there are ways to overcome these problems. If it’s a really famous book, try searching for the movie adaptation I bet there’s one lolololllll. I’m joking. There are other ways. You could read and think aloud, or write down your thoughts. Those are A+ examples from the presentation in class. Integrating the new to the known is interesting. It’s like what I always do. Relate the stuff back to whatever I know. Other than that, ask questions!!!!! It’s really great to trigger stuff up.

Totally unrelated but did you know that hurricanes are named in alphabetical order? And the ones we heard on the news are like,,, the massive ones??? Smaller ones are not that talked about because they didn’t cause much damage. And the names, they’re recycled every 6 years if they are not retired. Fact, hurricane names are retired if they cause serious damages and countless deaths such as Irma, Katrina, and Harvey. Those are some big storms there.
Its not what we did in class but I feel like sharing it here. What we did in class was get into groups and find some articles on the net and try out the reading strategies that was learnt in previous class. Pretty cool stuff ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Week 4
Reading strategies
Aaaahhhh, reading, the great escape from reality(strictly applies to fictions, non-fictions can catch these hands most of y’all are extensions of reality). But this class focuses on academic reading ok cool cool cool cool, ok so, we’re totally gonna talk about that but I’m just,,,,,,, gonna go ahead,,, and mention fiction here and there in this post for,,,hmm,,,,, an exciting twist *wink wink*.
Sooooooo,,,, of course, we would encounter these three superstars which are the stages of reading everytime we read and if you don’t know them, well,,,, may I introduce you to
Miss Pre-reading,
Mrs While reading, and
recently widowed or divorced(idk sis she’s doesn’t tell me stuff) Ms Post-reading.
These three ladies here are there when you decide to pick up a book and read.
I call pre-reading Miss because the reading material and us are still unattached. Get it??? Cause we’re still contemplating our decision??? and can drop it just like THAt????? ok nevermind. So, pre-reading strategies for reading journal articles and what not is bringing what you already have to the table and some other things like brainstorming, group discussions, visual aids, mind map, organisers,, and smell that?
Tumblr media
What’s great in this stage is that you CAN ask pre-questions. Like what is it about, what’s the characteristics, are there any examples(?) and have I experienced/read something like this before? is there an abstract I can read? For fiction, is there the thing that’s on the back of the book what do we call that a summary? Is it called a summary I don’t think it is. A brief description of the book?? idk or A REVIEW!!!! I don’t know about you guys but I really like to read reviews. Is it 4.5 stars?? 3 stars??? Only 2 stars if you read some other book that has similar themes? Will I let that color my opinion??? You already know the answer: It’s yes. And then, and only then will I decide whether I’m going to read the book. Most of the time I’m already sold with cute book covers tbh its a disease.
Moving on to while reading strategies. But first, the reason as to why I refer to it as Mrs. It’s bcs we(the readers) are currently attached to it, 😏😏😏.
What you can do in this stage is skim, scan, highlight, annotate and take notes. whatever that helps you to understand the text. Search for the main points and just get the general idea of it all. Question the text to keep you reading until you get the answer. Questioning is great I mean, will I keep reading to know more??? Yes! what thing happened that leads to the next thing???? and to know what dumb things that the characters have in store in later chapters? Yes! is the character gonna stay dumb or is finally get smarter or stuff like that.
Finally, post-reading!!! I think at this point you know why I call it Ms recently widowed/divorced right so we’re just gonna skip past that. What you can do in this stage is summarise or reflect upon it. Really think about the things that you picked up from the read, the knowledge, the moral of the story,,,,, ok I give up. I cant skip past it, it bothers me so, its widowed if you read it till the end and is moving on from it and divorced if you stopped reading it halfway. Anyways,,, think about what you read, let it linger in you and try to make sense of it. FEEL THE THINGS THAT THE TEXT WANTS YOU TO FEEL such as
Tumblr media
or
Tumblr media
or when reading non-fiction,
Tumblr media
and before I sign off, here’s a gif of Loki reading. Yes, a gif of the loml being an intellectual.

Week 3
Writing using the Genre Approach
The genre approach is easy to understand. It is the extension of the product approach and the writer must include specific linguistic features so that it matches a specific genre. A writer has to imitate a certain kind of format and the writing is good to go. This kind of writing appeals to a specific group of audience. For example, I am a final year student who is required to do a final year project. Will I read articles on BuzzFeed????? I absolutely would who am I kidding but that wouldn’t be relevant to my final year project,,,,, would it? I’d probably opt for some research journals so that I could have an idea of what I’m going to do for my project. Ok. Another example. I crave for something sweet and would like to eat but first i have to make,,, a Red Velvet Cream Cheese brownie,,, let me just *copy*,,,,,,,,,, slip in a pic of said dessert so we all can long for it together ok *and paste* and
Tumblr media
What do I do? Do I search for ‘How to Blend my Eyeshadow” a guide by Some Hollywood Make-Up Artist OR do I look up for the recipe at www.allrecipes.com ???? You decide.

Week 3
Writing using the Process Approach
So, the process approach is cool bcs I’m not tied up to anything. And that’s the problem. I’m not. tied up. to anything. Do you know how easy it is for me to get carried away?????? Ridiculously easy. I’d have no time limit, I can do whatever on whatever and that’s just not gonna work on someone who thrives on a deadline. If I don’t have have a specific time to finish doing something, you can bet your sweet ass I’m gonna put it on hold till the very last minute. But using this approach, my work would probably be more on point and reliable as I get to visit and revisit my writings tons of times. In conclusion, there are pros and cons to this approach.
Once again, I’m using my SPM Writing paper but this time, its Section B which is  Continuous Writing. I LIVED for this. I get to make up all sorts of stories in this section. I’ve been kidnapped, amputated, murder like, multiple people(1 person each essay for various reasons, eg; experiment gone wrong, it was an accident, I gave them a disease in the story, they wronged me, u know, that sort of stuff). I had a lot of fun planning them out in my head, only, it was an exam, I was on the clock and time was my enemy. I don’t usually plan the story ahead of the test as most of my classmates do because I just know that I’m not going to stick to it. I’d read the choices available and you just know my brain is going to make up  something new. And I’d just let the story unravel as I write while actively disregarding the time and usually, when I look up I’d hv like 10-20 minutes to wrap up my story.
Tumblr media
And most of the time, I had to cut my story short so my endings were rushed and when the test was over, I was left feeling like I could’ve done better. But that’s ok– I’ve made the best out of it and there’s no harm done.

Ms Nurul Ikhlas Binti Abd Hadi
Faculty of Modern Language and Communication,
Universiti Putra Malaysia, Serdang,

Dear Ms,
RE: Writing Using the Product Approach
You must think I am writing a formal letter in this entry. I am not but one look at this one is gonna make you think like I am.
2. The things up there, that was just the showman in me heheh. Since the product approach is all about formats and stuff like that, I purposely made this entry in a formal letter format(till this paragraph) for my amusement.
Anywaysssss, this approach is super safe I mean the format is a safety net itself. The sentences are short and packed with information. It takes a brief time to write and it reminds me of The Writing Paper in SPM. Section A is on Directed Writing and the points to be used in the essay are given and all I need to do is put in a format, string those babies up with words so that it makes a coherent sentence and BAM my job here is done! And thats what,,, like 10 marks for format, 10 marks if I used the points given and 15 marks for language. We’re nailing this son!
