I’ve seen some people comment on Yaz not having “a good enough reason” to leave her family to travel with Thirteen, Ryan and Graham. 

LISTEN UP. Here is my interpretation of her character so far. It’s just my opinion…

Yaz is under immense pressure at home to:

A) Be in a relationship - We don’t know if Yaz has come out to Naja and that’s why she automatically thought that Yaz could be dating a woman or a man. She could just be very desperate for her daughter to be seeing someone (and LGBT friendly). There is clearly a constant pressure for Yaz to be romantically involved, despite only being 19 (so was Rose). This clearly makes her feel uncomfortable, whether it’s her mum’s pushiness, the subject matter or both.

These scenes were not throwaway lines. The Doctor’s reaction wasn’t played for laughs - either she genuinely thinks they’re getting on pretty well and going on possible dates or she’s completely forgotten the concept of dating. It’s not a dig at LGBT themes, so it’s either representation for the sake of it, or it’s hinting at what is to come for Yaz and her journey, be it falling for someone in the TARDIS crew, coming out slowly or not focusing on romance at all and just throwing herself into adventures to learn about other thing she wants from life.   

B) Make friends - Sonya made that joke about her having to “pay” to have friends. When she saw Ryan again in 11x01, it came across less as “Haven’t seen you in years, bit awkward” and more “Oh shit i’ve gotta talk to someone who isn’t under arrest or a family member I can tell to shut up”. She stumbled over what questions to ask after only just yelling at women in the street and didn’t appear confident again until she was back in police mode on the train. We haven’t seen her have a full conversation with Graham yet and I wonder if that will be a character moment to showcase her awkwardness? 

She was thrown into the situation and understandably she has clung to thirteen, who is also on a journey of self discovery and who has warmed to her because of her outer-confidence and later on seemingly sensing that she’s the outsider of the “fam”.She’ll happily go along with whatever Thirteen says and seems to idolise her already, as an authoritative figure to look up to and learn from. 

Her interactions with Epzo and Amstrong in The Ghost Monument came across as very awkward, not really knowing how to make small talk. She was able to speak to Rosa because she was under pressure and she has a police-like task to carry out. That moment on the bus when she didn’t know where to sit, she seemed unsure to disclose her feelings about it to Thirteen and then passed it off as humour to hide her nerves.

I sense she’s getting on with Ryan move as an obligation at the moment. She enjoys their bickering but when he made that comment about living so close to each other she didn’t seem enthusiastic, but this could have been guilt that she’s ignored her neighbours and potential friends all this time because she’s been focused on her job.  

By the end of the series she will have at least three good friends. 

C) Make a difference as Police Officer - Yaz is a workaholic. Her desire to help people and make a difference seems to be the only thing that she’s sure of. She doesn’t have time to be sociable because she’s too wrapped up in the idea of leaving home and/or moving up ranks at her job: her sister (wants) needs her bedroom, she needs to find out what this conspiracy is, she needs to be in a relationship because these are the things that are expected of her. Stuck in that family bubble, I can see why she needs to escape and put her experience and eagerness to good use. 

Being part of the TARDIS team is the perfect chance for that and she knows from being on that bus in Alabama that just one person can make a difference. Sorting out parking disputes isn’t going to change the world fast enough. Her dad calls her a “police woman” instead of an officer. Little comments like that or the friends line (although often harmless) over a period of time can really get to someone and reinforce the idea that she’s not doing enough and won’t be good enough for her family. If she told them about her adventures in the TARDIS, she’d probably think that’d say “What, YOU? How could you possibly help, arresting aliens?” When of course this wouldn’t be the case and she knows that they love her and only want what’s best for her really. 

She’s been accepted into the TARDIS with open arms and she has purpose to be there. Thirteen, Graham and Ryan are her temporary fam, until she’s ready to face her real one and let them know who she really is and what she wants.

Honestly before ep4 I was hoping we’d get a cannonically Bi Yaz and I mean, nothing was said but,,,,,, her mum assumed Yaz and the Doctor must be seeing each other.

The Doctor,,, who’s a very pretty woman who’s clearly very enthusiastic and proud of Yaz

The Doctor who Yaz talks to with ease, follows around and looks at with such eyes
