Chardham Yatra: History and Significance
Tumblr media
Chardham is also called Chota Chardham or Chardham of Uttarakhand. Chardham is a place to be visited or worshiped much by the people of the Hindu religion. Chardham is a pilgrimage site located in the mountains of Uttarakhand state of India. These four Dhams are Yamunotri Dham, Gangotri Dham, Kedarnath Dham, and Badrinath Dham. Badrinath Dham is also included in the Chardham of India which is called Bada Chardham. India's biggest Chardham Temple is Puri, Rameshwaram, Dwarka, and Badrinath.
There is no clear evidence about when the Chardham Yatra originated. Although all the temples in Chota Chardham are special, Badrinath is considered more revered. Before 1962, traveling here used to be very difficult. Then when there was a war between India and China, when the movement of soldiers started increasing, the roads here started becoming a little easier Due to this, the pilgrims benefited a lot and the journey became easier for them. Then gradually the word 'Chhota' was removed from the name of this Yatra and this Yatra came to be known as Himalaya or Chardham Yatra of Uttarakhand. Then when the traffic started increasing here, things started improving here like roads and Shops, etc. And year by year, the number of pilgrims kept increasing and today in 2023, all kinds of comforts and facilities are available to visit Chardham. It is considered a bit unsafe to visit Chardham during the rainy season because there is a fear of landslides here.
According to Hindu religious texts, visiting Yamunotri Dham, Gangotri Dham, Kedarnath Dham, and Badrinath Dham is considered very virtuous. It is said that by visiting these four Dhams you get freedom from your sins. There are many other such ancient stories regarding these Chardhams. The correct way to visit Chardham is in this way. To have darshan of Chardham, first, you will have to have darshan of Yamunotri Dham, after darshan of Yamunotri Dham you will have darshan of Gangotri Dham, Then after visiting Gangotri Dham, you will visit Kedarnath Dham, then last of all you will visit Badrinath Dham.
Yamunotri Dham
Yamunotri Dham is considered to be the first Dham of Chardhamo. To reach Yamunotri Dham, you will have to trek 6 KM from Jankichatti, after that you will reach Yamunotri Dham. Yamunotri Temple was built by Maharani Jaypura in the 19th century. This temple is situated at a height of 3,291 meters on the banks of Bandarpooch Peak.
There is a belief that Yama Dev (Yamraj) shows some leniency towards those people who take baths in the Yamuna River. There is a mythological story behind this.
According to mythology, it is believed that Yamuna Mata was the daughter of Sun God and Yam Dev was her brother. Once on the day of Bhaiya Dooj, Lord Yama had given this promise to his sister Goddess Yamuna. Any devotee who takes a dip in the Yamuna River with a true heart will not be sent to Yamalok. This is the reason why Lord Yam shows some leniency towards those people who take baths in the Yamuna River with devotion. The origin of Yamuna River is situated at a distance of 1 km from Yamuna Temple. You will get to see many hot water ponds near Yamunotri Temple. Among all the hot water ponds, Surya Kund is liked the most. There is a belief behind this that Sun God had taken the form of this hot water pond as a blessing to his daughter Yamuna. Some people tie rice in a cloth and leave it in this hot water pool for some time. When the rice gets cooked after some time, it is taken home as Prasad. This could also be a reason that Yamunotri Dham is considered to be the first stop among the four Dhams.
Like all the four Dhams, in winter when it is very cold and due to snowfall, it becomes very difficult to reach here. So the idol of Yamuna Mata is brought to the Kharsali village of Uttarkashi and installed for 6 months so that the people can worship her.
Gangotri Dham
Gangotri Dham is the second stop among Chardhams in Uttarakhand, Gangotri Dham is situated at an altitude of 3,140 meters above sea level. Gangotri is also the origin place of the River Ganga. River Ganga is known as Bhagirathi in Gangotri Dham, There is also a reason that according to the ancient stories, the river is named after King Bhagirath because according to the stories, King Bhagirathi brought the Ganga to earth by performing penance.
There is a very famous mythological story about this that King Suryavanshi decided to perform Ashwamedha Yagya. Wherever that horse went during that yagya His sons took over those places. Indra Dev became worried due to this and he caught hold of that horse and tied it in Kapil Muni's ashram. When Raja Sagar's sons came to know about this, they disrespected Kapil Muni and got that horse released. Due to this Kapil Muni got angry and cursed all the sons of King Sagar And all those sons turned into ashes and scattered. When Raja Sagar came to know about this, he went to Kapil Muni ji to ask for forgiveness  And after King Sagar apologized, the sage's heart was moved. And he forgave the sons of King Sagar and suggested a solution: May the river flowing in heaven come to earth and with the touch of that holy water, all your sons will come back to life. King Sagar performed severe penance but failed to bring the river from heaven to earth. Then after that, one of his sons named Bhagiratha was successful in bringing Ganga from heaven to earth. But due to the huge flow of river Ganga, he requested Lord Shiva for help. After that, Lord Shiva controlled Mother Ganga's water flow by holding her in his locks, As a result, King Sagar's sons came back to life by the touch of Ganga's water.
In the Hindu religion, the river Ganga is considered very sacred and the giver of salvation. Pilgrims carry with them the holy water of the Bhagirathi River because the use of this water in auspicious works is considered very auspicious. Besides, water taken from Gangotri is also used for water anointment in Kedarnath Temple.
Kedarnath Temple
Kedarnath is the third stage of Chardham Yatra located in the Himalayas of Uttarakhand. Kedarnath Dham is situated at a height of 11,746 feet above sea level. Kedarnath Dham is situated near the origin of the Mandakini River. A large number of people come to Kedarnath to perform Jalabhishek and Kedarnath Dham is also one of the 12 revered Jyotirlingas. According to Vayupuran, when Lord Vishnu came to reside on earth, he first stepped into Badrinath. At that time Lord Shiva used to reside in Badrinath but Lord Shiva abandoned this place for Lord Vishnu. And came and resided in Kedarnath Therefore Kedarnath Dham reflects the spirit of sacrifice. It was at this very place that Adi Shankar Charya took Samadhi at the age of 32 years. Before Samadhi he had appointed Veer Shaiv as Raval of Kedarnath currently in Kedarnath temple; he is worshiped by Raval number 337. Then it is brought to Guptkashi in winter. Kedarnath Temple is surrounded by the Himalayas whose view is worth seeing brown colored stone has been used in making Kedarnath Temple and the roof is made of wood and a gold urn is installed on the peak. And right in front of the temple, you get to see a statue of Nandi Maharaj facing the temple.
He is also seen as the guard of Kedarnath Temple. It is believed that Kedarnath Temple was built by Adi-Shakaracharya. After the great battle of Kurukshetra, he started searching for Shiva to save himself from the sin of killing the Pandava brothers But Lord Shiva did not want to appear to the Pandavas. Therefore, Lord Shiva disappeared from there and settled in Kedarnath. Pandavas searching for him came till Kedarnath then Lord Shiva transformed himself into a bull to escape from Pandavas And disappeared into the ground, But Bhima recognized that this bull was none other than Lord Shiva and Bhima caught hold of the Lord's back.
Due to fear of being caught, the bull disappeared into the ground and appeared at five different places. When Lord Shiva disappeared into Amin, the upper part of his body appeared in Kathmandu which is known as Pashupatinath. Shiva's arms were manifested in Rudranath, navel in Madmaheshwar, and Hairs in Kalpeshwar. This is the reason why along with these four places, Kedarnath is also counted among the Panch Kedars. After Diwali, the doors of Kedarnath Dham are closed and they are taken to Omkareshwar Temple which is located in Ukhimath.
Badrinath Dham
Badrinath Dham is situated between two mountains named Nar and Narayan. Badrinath Dham is the fourth stop among the four Dhams. Badrinath Dham is situated at an altitude of 1,133 meters above sea level. Badrinath Dham is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. You will get to see Plum trees in Badrinath Because it is believed that when Lord Narayan became engrossed in meditation, Goddess Lakshmi took the form of a Plum tree to provide him shade But now you get to see Plum trees only in small quantities. Narayan ji's devotee Narad ji is also worshiped here. The temple situated in Badrinath today is about 15 meters high and was built by the king of Garhwal 2 centuries ago. And 15 idols are installed in this temple and idols of Nar and Narayan ji along with Lord Vishnu can be seen in the sanctum sanctorum. Well, it seems that this temple has been situated here since the Vedic period And Adi Shankara Charya had renovated this temple in the 8th century. The idols of Shiva-Parvati and Ganesh ji are also installed in this temple. Badrinath Dham is the only Temple located in Chota Chardham and Bade Chardham. In the temple in Badrinath the idol of Lord Vishnu is installed is of black color and the height of the idol is 1 meter. There is a very famous story that once Lord Vishnu searched for a place for meditation and reached Badrinath. and Lord Vishnu became engrossed in meditation, Lord Vishnu became so engrossed in meditation that he did not even feel the cold, and to save Lord Vishnu from the cold, Goddess Lakshmi ji transformed herself into a tree of Plum. Pleased with Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Vishnu named this place Badrika Ashram. Like all other religions, Badrinath Dham also remains closed for 6 months in winter and during this time, the idol of Badrinath ji is brought to Joshimath and is installed in the Narsingh Temple located there and remains there for the next 6 months.

Some people tie rice in a cloth and leave it in this hot water pool for some time When the rice gets cooked after some time, it is taken home as Prasad.
And it was at this very place that Adi Shankar Charya took Samadhi at the age of 32 years. Before Samadhi he had appointed Veer Shaiv as Raval of Kedarnath currently in Kedarnath temple, he is worshiped by Raval number 337.
