On May 19 Sgt. Michael Kunovich deemed him suspicious while outside the Super 8 motel parking lot. Aguilar Mendez was sitting down eating but started to walk away when the officer approached in his patrol vehicle. Kunovich began to question him, but Aguilar Mendez couldn't understand him or communicate well and repeated that he was sorry. That's when Kunovich decided to search him, and Aguilar Mendez resisted. Two other deputies arrived to assist in taking the 5-foot-4, 115-pound teen to the ground as Kunovich repeatedly stunned him with his taser, all seen on body-worn camera video. Aguilar Mendez can be heard screaming for his family and is seen trying to gain control of the taser as the officers note in the video. Toward the end of the 6-minute scuffle, the deputies saw that their handcuffed suspect had a small folding knife and disarmed him. Kunovich collapsed a short time later in medical distress and died at the hospital, the Sheriff's Office said. Aguilar Mendez, who came here from Guatemala, was staying with other farmworkers at the hotel. He is being detained without bail, which is the subject of another hearing as yet to be decided. I'm going to need you all to start spreading awareness about this case and sign the petition. I'm a 5'4 woman and I weigh more than him. He's only 18, indigenous and doesn't understand English nor Spanish really. I can't imagine how confused and scared he was. Tased 6 times and apologizing repeatedly and calling out for his family... he is not responsible for the police officer's death. The fact he's been held for 8 months without bail is disgusting.

Are the Wayuu the ones who make hats, by any chance? I see a particular type of indigenous-made hat in Encanto.

Hi there! Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. There's a type of hat that Wayúu people use specifically called an uwomü. It's made from woven straw, and sometimes we add puff ball decorations.

From what I remember in Encanto, the hat looks more like this:

Which is a Colombian vueltiao hat! They were originally made by Zenú or Sinú peoples. The hat is a national symbol for Colombia! They're both similar styles but totally different. Both are made from straw.

Just out of curiosity - I read your post about how the “Australian” government abducted aboriginal children and assimilated them as part of the genocide against the native people, and it has me wondering, what is the land of Australia actually called? Since Australia is the name given by settlers, what do the aboriginal people actually call their home?

this is very easily googleable and I really encourage you to do your own research but I'm feeling generous. there is no one name for the land because Aboriginal peoples had (and still very much do have) our own nations that make up this land.

There are over 300 Indigenous nations on this continent. Each with its own language, laws, and cultural protocol. Some nations close in proximity share certain cultural protocols and language. Certain regions have names like "Koori" is most of the region also known as NSW and "Murri" is similar to the region known as Queensland. My people are Koori.

What is widely known as the Australian continent is large. First Nations peoples from Palawa, for example, rarely if ever interacted with Noongar peoples until after colonisation. Because of the size (the continent is 2 times bigger than Russia and only slightly smaller than the US) and differences in language, it's unlikely Aboriginal peoples had an agreed upon name for the entire land. But it's also worth noting that if we did have a name for it, that name has probably been lost due to violent colonial efforts to strip us of our language and history. You'll hear people say "so-called Australia" as a way to acknowledge all this.

no soy wayuu asi que no te puedo dar una respuesta fija. lo que puedo decir es que las mochilas son algo culturales, los colores y modelos de las mochilas se basan en la conexión entre el tejido y los pensamientos y creencias wayuu. para nosotros los arhuacos, los diseños de nuestras mochilas se basan en nuestra cosmogonía y vida cotidiana. los diseños identifica las familias.

teniendo eso en cuenta, creo que sería mejor no intentarlo. aunque el diseño sea lo mismo, una persona q no sea indígena no tiene una conexión con los diseños
