Public thinks that we as anesthesiologists are money grubbing awful people intentionally putting surprise medical bills out to people. What the public doesn’t know is that insurance companies in general and United Healthcare in particular have, for years, continued to decrease payment to us As well as not renegotiate or just cancel contracts—-which in turn makes us out of network at the hospitals and locations where people come for procedures and surgery and since we provide anesthesia for all comers—-insurance or not—-the out of network bill ends up going to patients when in reality the insurance company is the impetus for this problem. Our payments from Medicare and Medi-Cal are less than a third of what is paid to all other specialities yet private insurance has traditionally been able to make up difference fir that care and completely uninsured care we provide for free. However now private insurers want to pay Medicare rates and this is not only not fair compared to other specialities it is literally not sustainable to cover overhead and care for patients. Insurance companies should be eliminated—-the fact that a company can have a fiduciary responsibility to make a profit for shareholders rather than a good and responsibility to provide care to and safety of patients is a major problem.
