all day a great drama has played out amongst the birds my sister and i have been unable to turn from the windows at first there was a great mass of black cormorants with here and there a seagull and pelicans above them; we determined the seagulls were the lieutenants and the pelicans generals; then after much going back and forth and disturbances from passing boats etc there has been some sort of SCHISM and the white birds now hold one bank while the black have been reduced to a quarter of their force and hold the other. another quarter have naval supremacy and i am unclear what their position is with regards to the pelicans that are amongst them. there is also a duck but i do not know what she is doing
