needfuldreams‌:
「🌺」 It was a pleasure listening to the younger fox. Every time the two met (which admittedly was not as often as the Qilin would like) it was still pleasurable and – what was more important to him, it served as a pleasant distraction from the repeating schematics that his days had recently become. Soyokaze was quite a calm individual, a sharp mind with a serene personality. That of course did not mean that there was no flesh into which he could possibly bite. The fox had an ego, one that was so big it could nearly be seen as an entity in and of itself. Haneul’s natural good manners subdued it for most of the time but Kirin had found it and whenever he would meet the other he would always make sure to play with it, knowing that was the way to see the fox unwind and finally speak the full truth without filter.
“Most definitely. Humans are the new gods and their beliefs – or lack of thereof are now the new ruling religion and all of us need to adapt. That is what survival of the fittest was to mean, originally. Adapt – or die. It’s just a pity that the same people that managed to name this rule fail so hard and following it.” With a perhaps overly theatrical flare the beast shook his head and sighed. “Poor, poor animals who can talk, poor, poor ghosts and demons that used to live in harmony with the old men. Gone is the time of peace, now is the time of so-called Reason mixed with hysteria whenever something deemed unnatural happens.” He stopped and smiled at the other. “Lesson one – never fight with a human.” In his own special way, the beast of luck made it clear that indeed he would take the other under his wings, he would teach him what he knows. And his knowledge… while cased within books in its essence mostly stemmed from his experiences throughout his life. True – not once did he spend an evening and a night holed up with a volume of a book, learning more about the world but – he was an old beast and the past had little to offer him – he had been there after all.
Of course it did not mean there was nothing more to learn, in fact that was far from the truth. As long as the world changed there would always come something new, something unknown, something – worthwhile. True, humans especially had a tendency to repeat their mistakes but it was a fact well known to the Qilin that beasts too were rather… conservative in their habits, beliefs and rituals. He was an advocate for middle grounds in everything. “Lesson two – some of us around know of each other’s existence.” A nearly childish gleam appeared in the dark-haired male’s eyes as he leaned toward the other. “You speak so fondly of your natural form… do you know that this city alone has over a dozen clubs and pub for the supernatural? All ethnicities, all species allowed, each and every last lost soul that misses seeing himself interact with others in his natural form is welcome. There is only one rule – no fights and no cheating. Be it a kitsune that wishes to seduce someone to pay for their drink or a tanuki who simply has sticky hands by simple habit are to keep to themselves in this regard. Even–” A chuckled pushed past the males lips “Even the gold beasts, the Bulsajo, or the Qilin had to adapt and not cause trouble. But for that – we get to sit beside each other and enjoy ourselves the way we used to, with no fear.”
In truth he had only been to one of the clubs and even that was but five times but he spoke masterfully about the pleasures of being among his own. He wanted to entice Haneul to join him, mostly for company as the old creatures remembered his reckless games and chose not to spend too much time with him in fear the fickle Luck would cause them a great deal of damage without even realising it. The god of fortune was, after all more than aware of his reputation. So in comparison with humans who were easily manipulated and guided, who listened to him and his charisma, it was among his own that the Qilin felt the most lonely. He needed a friend and Haneul – seemed perfect.
What a thought. He sighed in contempt, irate at humans’ disregard for entities higher than themselves. It was true, though. If Haneul wanted to survive the quick changes that society was piling onto him, he would have to modify himself. That was how it was in the past. It just felt different now that humans were on the top. The reality of it all was a hard pill for the fox to swallow, but humans had shown him personally. He grunted in unease. Haneul, a powerful kitsune, having to conform to humans’ whims? It was more likely than he thought.
“Are humans not scared of anything anymore?” He tutted his tongue against the roof of his mouth. “I can adapt well -- I would not have survived hundreds of years if not.. However, I think humans need to be struck in the heart with a new fear. It cannot be too much of a good thing to become unwavering even in the face of their gods, can it? Recklessness begets only trouble.” Haneul was prudent, no question about it. Being cautious had served him well for the most part -- planning out what he was going to do well in advance. That people just laughed in the face of danger was strange to him, though, even if he hated to admit it, he felt a twinge of admiration. What he couldn’t do, mere humans could, and that was impressive even to him. He snorted. “If anything unnatural were to happen, they are certain to have their electronic devices in tow, ready to film.. which, I suppose, is fairly smart for their own good.” Another low sigh pushed through his lips. “I just am not all too welcome with the idea of being poked and prodded.” The idea of experimentation had been one lingering in the recesses of his mind. If it was not being murdered outright, it was being studied -- humans were obsessed with the idea of immortality, weren’t they? It was a little funny, though. For as much as Haneul studied, what an end it would be if that happened to be his fate -- even he could find a little humor in that. “Noted. I have done well not to meddle too much with the likes of them..on purpose, of course.” An impish grin spread itself across his lips. He would not outright fight a human, but the fox had found amusement in toying with them. It was his nature!
The metaphorical ears a top Haneul’s head perked up. A club for supernatural? “Those exist? I was not aware.” This was the first he had heard of it. He was always bouncing around, traveling from region to region, never staying in one place for too long. Wherever the wind went, he followed -- a free spirit. For this reason, he must not have stuck around long enough to hear of such an idea. It was enticing to think of displaying his tails -- at least some of them -- without a problem. However, there was the issue of his.. susceptibility to alcohol. Haneul would never stoop so far as to call himself a lightweight. That wasn’t the issue. The fact of the matter was that he had a harder time keeping his appearance composed, to keep himself human, when he drank. Perhaps it would be less of an issue if he was parading himself around at the supernatural bar in the first place, but the worry still gnawed at him, as usual. “I would be willing to attend one of these.. clubs. I do have my reservations.. but I suppose I have to trust my dear teacher. You wouldn’t let anything happen to your poor pupil now would you?” He laughed, though he was still apprehensive -- but he was feeling better about the idea. “I can behave myself well; thank you for your concern. I like to think of myself as a well-mannered fox, sir. The thought would have never crossed my mind. And will a qilin such as yourself be able to resist the urge to use your luck to your advantage, say, in gambling?” It was mostly true. The chances of him acting up around other supernatural in a controlled environment were slim. Besides, he liked to pick on humans much more. “It sounds nice..” He bobbed his head slightly. “Yes, perhaps I should visit one.. It has been awhile since I have seen another besides you. I think it could be a good change for me.” Brown orbs looked hesitantly to Kirin. “Would you like to show me around?” The light thrill of the unknown mixed with concern coursed through his veins, but he was ready. “When you have the time, of course!” He backpedaled just a bit, not wanting to be imposing if now was not favorable. “It would be like a.. lab? A field trip?” It had been awhile since he had been in school.

「🌺」 Yet again it was difficult for the qilin to hide his amusement as once again Haneul chose to emphasise his role. With a perfectly straight face, he nodded. “Naturally, a high quality comrade. I chose to drop that, since it is a given with you, is it not?” Finally, he allowed himself a small smile that immediately danced upon his lips, turning his features much softer and his eyes glimmering with mischief.
In all truth, the qilin did respect the other, immensely so. The kitsune was just like he but younger. Thrown into danger but willing to adapt all the while never forgetting who he is. Moreso – he would doubly take care of his nature, make sure it was not forgotten which was not common among the beasts of supernatural. Not anymore. Not when faith was dwindling away as the humans crudely pushed everything they could not see nor understand. It was far easier to simply forget about one’s nature, let oneself simply delve into the human world and pass as one of them, finding a simple calling, or at least comfort and safety. To Kirin that in itself was cowardice and he held such creatures in utmost contempt. For that fact alone Haneul’s haughtiness was a virtue rather than a vice in the celestial beast’s eyes. “I know better than to order you around, Haneul.” Minor manipulation was far more effective with the kitsune anyway.
“What I want to do…” The qilin hummed melodically, looking at the gentle, soft-looking fur before him. It begged to be touched, it begged to be squeezed. That was what he wanted to do. But he knew better. Before he answered he thought of himself. Of his own form. Of his – admittedly one single – tail. It was made of clouds, soft to the touch and inviting. It looked like cotton and made children think of marshmallows. He hated it. “Hmmm, what I want is to compliment you on the well-kept state and your grooming skills. What I also want is to see the full magnificence of the full six. That would please me greatly.” Having said that, content and nearly sure that his answer was close to the best he could give, he nodded slowly.
The choice of words from the qilin had Haneul bite back a grin. To be able to hear that he was worthy -- that was something. “Why, yes, of course.” His head was inflating far beyond their usual bounds, the fox eating up at the compliments like tofu -- a favorite for kitsune.
“Then that is settled. I trust that you will suit my requirements well, then.” Although overjoyed, Haneul tried his utmost best to conceal his feelings. It was not like himself to be as transparent as a windowpane. He had not been raised that way. Emotions were, more often than not, a sign of weakness. And, weakness would not be tolerated in front of an exemplary being such as Kirin. He had an urge to impress. There was no room for anything less than perfection.
With bated breath, the fox watched for Kirin’s response. Careful eyes analyzed him and were surprised with what they saw. He was delighted when Kirin did not simply stroke the tail as he had expected was what he wanted to do. How silly of himself, he thought, to not trust that Kirin would adapt and not simply give into worldly pleasures such as touching his fur. Pleased, Haneul slowly drew the tail back. “I accept and appreciate your compliment. I make sure to maintain their sleek look.. I wouldn’t want to look like a regular ol’ fox.” He caressed a hand along a tail, gaze still on Kirin. “If that is what you wish, I suppose I have no other choice.” The fox raised a brow, but was more than willing to show off the elegance of the six tails -- much like a bird of paradise courting. Within seconds, three more tails materialized by his side. More vulpine features -- his ears and claws -- also made themselves home on his visage. The fox stood proudly, silent for a few moments to allow Kirin to admire him. He was a sight to behold, wasn’t he?
“Are you satisfied, Kirin?” Haneul rested a hand on his hip, flaunting himself to the other. “And... what about you?” He dared to ask. “Do you have anything to show me?”

Sakura sighed in relief when it was only a fox that there rather than a demon. Sakura was a very young fox still learning to adapt with everything. She shook off all the bad possibilities and focus on what is happening now. Another fox was there, and now warning her to leave.
“Is something coming?” She asked the other fox. A stranger was concerned about her safety. That’s new.
The young fox breathed a bit and began to toy with the ends of her hair. Bad habit already in development. Sakura came to the same forest almost every other day, but was lucky not to come across anything or anyone until now. She was given a warning. Was something going to come?
“I will be leaving shortly. I’ve been here many times. No one ever is around here except for myself. Or do you think something will be here?”
Truthfully, Soyokaze was tense with the scent she had caught nearby, and a fellow kitsune by her side made her feel just a little better. It was out of the norm that she would try to band together with a stranger, let alone another kitsune -- being tricksters that they were -- but there was nothing else she could do besides hiding alone. It seemed to her that if they both hid together, if they were to be discovered, they would have a better chance at escaping.
“Yes, and it doesn’t seem to have the best intentions for those who get into its way.” The vixen’s voice was hushed, amber eyes darting from side-to-side. “It is out for blood..” Demons were never too kind, after all, bringing despair and destruction with them wherever they went.
“Oh, miss, but I have been here, too.” She gave a short laugh, before her composure returned, too timid to banter for long at all. “I know something is here. I smelled it with my own nose.” And with it was the strong scent of iron. That was what had terrified her. “Do you think I should escort you to safety?” Soyokaze gave a tilt of her head. Helping another while helping herself seemed like a win-win situation.

jasper ( @informem ) // two years ago, nyc, usa
the nursery is a little out of taehoon’s way, but it’s well worth it, especially when he knows he will not see the light of day once he enters work. he’s finally gotten longer shifts but a cruel ten to ten, and his body refuses to acclimate to the time difference and let him sleep in. (but at least he can pay the rent for the shitty apartment he’s in.) it looks like the store has just been opened when he comes in, but he doesn’t immediately see one of the workers.
he makes his way over to the flowers — looks like a bunch of mums are out for the season, along with some hardier plants. maybe he should check out their herbal plants; having something fresh in his apartment might make the place a little more bearable.
he glances around for the nursery employee who is usually here when taehoon comes in to window shop; taehoon always feels a little pang of guilt for that, but today he should have enough to buy at least a little something. hopefully the air in his apartment doesn’t just kill it straight out. god… he misses his garden. “uh…” he calls out, and he squints at the worker’s name tag from a distance. “…jasper, yeah? where are your herbs?”
the sun is high above the horizon at 8am, its rays fluttering against jasper’s skin. days were cooling as summer approached its end -- jasper was definitely looking forward to the decreasing humidity that autumn in new york city brought. and, as an added benefit, the farmer tan that had formed on his skin would have less sun to keep it in its full glory. finally, he would be able to rid himself of the hideous tan.
at least, for now, the weather is nice. mornings were always the best. all he could do was tend to the plants under his care. checking on the flora was calming -- perhaps what drew him to the job in the first place. throughout his childhood, jasper had never had plants of his own, but the idea had always interested him, considering his belief of it bettering the earth. that interest had only swollen up when he discovered he had a bit of a greenthumb. now, jasper believes himself to have the power to help the earth!
jasper is crouched by a bed of sunflowers, inspecting them, when he hears the scuffle of shoes on pavement. almost as soon as he hears them, he shoots up. he turns to face the direction of the noise, and he notices a smaller male approaching him.
“oh, follow me right this way!” jasper does not miss a beat, though he was caught by surprise. they had only just opened, and, already, there is a customer! actually, now that he thinks about it, hasn’t he seen him before? he steals a glance behind himself when turning a corner, certain that he has seen the male before. perhaps he is a returning customer, jasper decides.
he stops before a collection of basil, mint, and rosemary, amongst others. extending an arm, he gestures towards the herbs. “was there a particular herb you had your eyes set on, sir?”

REMEMBER KIDS !!   some very important relationships are PLATONIC.   some are maternal, paternal, friendships, siblingships.   they do not all have to revolve around romantic/sexual attraction.   please don’t ever think that i wouldn’t write with you if you didn’t want to bring a romantic/sexual ship to the table. I LOVE PLATONIC RELATIONSHIPS.   THEY ARE UNDERRATED, UNDER EXPLORED, AND LOOKED PAST WAY TOO OFTEN.    THEY CAN BE THE MOST IMPORTANT RELATIONSHIP TO A CHARACTER.   PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.

@lusineinthesky: continued from here
The alien perked up, straightening her back at the sound of another’s voice. Was it directed towards her? Her bright head turned ever so slight, doe eyes stealing the slightest of glances at the source of the noise. When it seemed like a comment made just to one’s self, she redirected her gaze forward to the row of little rose bushes she’d been eyeballing. They didn’t seem very busy. Maybe she was unwanted?
“Is it long?” she spoke up, a bit nervous at using English again because it’d been many, many years since she assimilated the language from a paramedic when she initially crash landed on Earth. “Your..shift. It’s a long one?”
When Jasper heard the voice of a woman, he immediately jolted upright. He had been talking to himself while lazing around, and there was a customer! He had missed her arrival. How negligent of him! Already, Jasper felt embarrassment and shame -- leaving his limbs shaky almost immediately.
“Oh, I am so sorry!” Jasper blurted out, barraging her with apology after apology. Really, of all the times that he could have been irresponsible, why did it have to be now? “I-- yes, my shift is long today.” He sighed, giving a small nod of his head. “But that is no excuse for me to space out like that.. I am very sorry. Is there anything I can help you with?”

astraeignis:
「🌺」 It took nearly everything in Kirin not to burst out laughing at the silent, cold dignity that Haneul chose to present in response to the qilin’s words. But he managed to calm himself internally not to show his amusement to the other. Haneul truly had a very delicate sense of self and his attachment to the image of ferocity itself only showed just how much he still needed to grow before he could truly be called and respected as mature. But those words and observations were for the teacher to have and the student to work through bit by bit.
Nonetheless one could feel a change in Haneul. From what Kirin remembered the last time the two had spoken when faced with the luck beast’s provocation, Soyokaze would have already been gone, ignoring Kirin’s entire existence and yet here he stood, complaining – but present. It was enough to make him feel respect for the ever-changing creature. And the way the other naturally accepted him as his teacher and now – though obviously slightly begrudgingly – treated him with the respect their relationship demanded. Truly, one could see the old school is the Kitsune, ones that have long since been forgotten, ones that Kirin would love to see come back. But it seemed to him that the modern world was mostly a time for blooming arrogance made to look like wisdom, those who were respectful and more passive would die in the endless sea of screaming disdain. He laughed out. “I suppose that’s true. I guess our bond is mutually beneficial. You gain knowledge – I gain a comrade.” In truth while he barely led the other know this, he saw them as equals and Haneul’s presence was most definitely desirable.
He bit on his lower lip to stiffen a loud sigh of adoration at the beautiful, furry appendages, his hand already slowly shooting out to feel the softness and fragility of the fur. But he was not sure whether the other would see it as adoration or rather as mocking and the qilin calmed himself down, only allowing his lips to curl in a soft smile. “They are magnificent. I would love to…” He chose not to finish the sentence, instead turning back to the kitsune’s words. “you said you were going to test me… what did you mean?”
Observing the reaction from the qilin, the kitsune concluded that his point was made clear. From what he could tell, there was not a single etching of amusement drawn on Kirin’s face, and that pleased him. Finally, perhaps, he had persuaded Kirin that he was not cute -- at least, for now. Whenever he were to shift into his true form around Kirin, that may be a different story altogether.
“A high quality comrade.” Haneul added. He was very sure of his ability -- deeming himself more than capable. In his own eyes, Haneul was, indeed, noble. Whether Kirin agreed with this, Haneul was not entirely certain. Although he was immense in power, the qilin was more so. He only hoped that he had truly gained his respect. It was something the kitsune was going to work towards, at the very least. “Who else do you know that can follow instructions so diligently? That is not to say I am your little chickling to string along, no. I think for myself, but when it is required, I think that I fulfill my work well.” Regardless of what Kirin thought, though, Haneul had quite the ego, which was always itching to be filled.
He hummed in thought at the other beast’s reaction. Flicking a tail, Haneul let the soft, white end of it brush against Kirin’s palm. “What is it that you would love to do?” The kitsune’s gaze was serious, boring into the qilin’s. To the question, Haneul chose not to respond. This was the test. He was gauging the reaction to his more vulpine features -- starting with his tails. Maybe it would have been easier to start with the ears, or the teeth, but the tails were the key point to a kitsune. At the moment, there were only two tails, but what would Kirin think of all six? So far, Haneul didn’t know what to make of it. “Magnificent is more like it -- beautiful even.” It was an afterthought, but those such words did not bother him; it was adjectives such as “cute” that vexed him. A third tail made itself visible, staying at his side. Three should do, he decided.

Sakura, alone, wandered through the forest. There was an slight overcast that afternoon, but the trees made the forest a bit darker. It was quiet. In the distance, you could hear the water from the creek running down stream, and small animals climbing up the trees or scurrying across the forest floor. The forest was a place where the young kitsune could be without too much of a care in the world. Well, she rarely cared about anything except two people: her twin and her mother. No one else. For now.
As she neared the creek, the kitsune stopped dead in her tracks when she heard quick footsteps. She couldn’t catch a strong smell, but she knew it wasn’t a human. Sakura swallowed hard, her nails extended, and quickened her pace to the creek.
Please don’t be an oni, please.
A pointed snout sniffed at the ground, ruffling leaves up into the air as the she-fox inhaled the scent of another of her kind. She knew the fox was close -- Soyokaze could just feel it. The odor was still fresh. However, it was only a matter of time until it rained, at least, that is what she assumed, given the clouds hanging overhead. If she wanted to locate the other fox, she had to quicken her pace.
Agile paws traversed through the forest floor, finding themselves nearing a source of water. The sounds of a steady stream slapping against rocks was growing louder -- and so was the shuddering breaths of her target. There was no doubt that the other fox was aware of her presence. In all honesty, Soyokaze wasn’t there to stir up trouble, rather the opposite. She had caught wind of a malicious entity and had the intentions of warning the fox.
When she had caught sight of the other, the fox sprinted to keep up beside her. “Excuse me, miss?” Soyokaze called out, simultaneously trying to speak loud enough to be heard, while not garnering unwanted attention. “I don’t mean to alarm you, but it isn’t safe for you to be out here alone. It would be wise for you to seek shelter.” Concern was mixed into her voice, genuinely worried about the well-being of the stranger. It may not have been her business, but the least she could do was try to help.

He’s not going to stay in New York for a long time. At least that’s what he’s telling himself – ever since he left his motherland, he’s not stayed anywhere for longer than a few months. Norway held the current record with eight months but that’s only due to the fact he got to live in a rather secluded area. New York City was far too loud, far too crowded, far too messy for his liking. A heavy sigh escaped the Slav as he looked towards the street dancers who have taken over the public square showing off their skills. Yet again his plans for a quiet afternoon were ruined. Why was he even still here? Somewhere from the side he heard a gasp coming most probably from someone who was in awe for the talent presented by the teenagers. “No” he stated before any the other even made an attempt of conversation with him. He’s not interested.
The intricate details put into their dance was beautiful. How could Jasper not appreciate the beauty of their technique? It was soft, yet sharp. The dancers could embody multiple emotions at once, seizing the young man’s attention easily. Oh, how he yearned to dance there with them. It was their time to shine, though, so he could only watch on, enraptured by the performance. He gasped in sheer praise for them. Unaccompanied by a fellow friend who loved dance, Jasper turned to the next best option -- the man beside him. But, before he even got a word out, he was shot down.
Swallowing thickly, Jasper hesitated. Usually he would not speak to strangers, but the fact that he had been denied so quickly did not deter him; no, it upset him. He was feeling extra brave today and did not want to take a rude encounter lying down. Most days, he would let people walk all over him, but not today. “Okay? I’m sorry. I was going to ask you if you were also impressed by the dance. I guess not. It wouldn’t hurt to politely tell me that you don’t wanna talk.”

「🌺」 “Listen, I can… let you live and take back my comment about your cuteness.” Kirin spoke, though there was still amusement plainly audible in his voice as he observed the annoyance of the other. “But please don’t threaten me, young one. I shan’t be afraid of you and truly I can’t imagine you doing anything to me besides a few scratches. And even that is questionable. And – just so we’re clear – it’s not about me thinking you couldn’t hurt me, not at all. You’re powerful enough. It’s just that I find it difficult to believe you would hurt a friend just because of a little teasing.”
It was just so much fun to see the colourful reactions of the fox. He let all his emotions be so perfectly visible, like a painting that Kirin was creating with his words only to remake it again and again. A magical scene that the best of luck revelled in. After all that was what he was supposed to do. That… well, that used to be he was supposed to do. He chose leaders and then he shaped them with his words. Nowadays barely anyone listened to him, each human perfectly sure they were capable of shaping themselves. And the state of the world showed it perfectly yet still the humans refused to listen. Seeing Haneul so easily moved by his words tapped into that primal need of manipulating others. Too bad he didn’t use it in a good way.
“I promise never to comment on it again, but you can’t stop me from adoring the softness of your fur and the subtlety of your fox features. Nor, for that matter, should you ever deny me that lovel– majestic sight. The sadness of you not trusting me enough to see your true form could end up in me wilting away in despair…”
Although the kitsune settled back down, he could not pass the chance to huff indignantly. Whether Kirin took back his initial statement or not, Haneul was well aware that it did not change the qilin’s opinions on the matter. To the ancient being, Haneul was still an adorable, fluffy, cuddly fox. It was frustrating -- here he had gone and made his image more fearsome, only to be torn down to the mere appearance of his true form.
“Thank you. I would greatly appreciate that.” His dark eyes lift to meet with Kirin’s gaze, hoping to conceal his lingering annoyance. It was not that big of a deal, he knew. He just could not help himself but to flare up and become defensive. “It was a bluff. You know my intentions too well.” The beginnings of a pout tickle at the curves of his lips. “I said it only for you to not think of me as cute. I would not.. stoop to such levels over petty squabbling.” He exhales a sigh quietly. At least Kirin had not taken his words at face value. “And, who would I be to attack my own teacher? That seems awfully counterproductive. After all, were I to lose you, who else would I turn to for knowledge?” A sly grin creeps onto his face, replacing the pout that had been there only moments ago. Even if he was subservient to another being, the relationship was not one he minded. Not one bit. Haneul felt that he was benefitting enormously in the form of knowledge. It was not something that he would jeopardize if he could help it.
The direction of the conversation elicits a soft groan, followed by Haneul rolling his eyes. “I suppose adoration is allowed, so long as those.. comments of yours are kept at bay. You can adore with your eyes and hands, yes? So long as I don’t have to hear it verbalized, perhaps I can manage. I wouldn’t want you to wither away now..” He allows a pair of tails to materialize, flicking them in Kirin’s general direction. They were close, though Haneul made certain not to actually touch Kirin with the soft appendages. “Now, let’s test you.”

「🌺」 Immediately as he saw the reaction a smile crept over his lips. It was true what they said about foxes – they were slaves to their pride. This one as well – he’d swollen up at the recognition much like a peacock would in front of a female of its species. Rather funny to watch but also quite adorable. It seemed that the kitsune was younger than him, his excitement easily showing no matter how hard the other tried to hide it under a mask of composure and coolness.
“Seeing since you are most obviously not from around these parts, I can imagine it’s hard for you to meet creatures of the supernatural. After all, with humans running around forcing their reign upon others it makes a lot of sense that we try to hide and not let ourselves be noticed.” The qilin had to stop himself not to say that the fact that he wasn’t like that came from his power over this ruling race that still begged for the old legend of good luck bestowed upon those who see a qilin to be true. Throughout his life he’d been an adviser for so many different kings, generals and even presidents that he’d learnt to see himself as a creature beyond the rule of man and rather preferring to see himself as a shadow king.
“Haneul… I am guessing you adapted it?” He was no better though so he smiled and nodded. “Ahh the ancients… I sometimes wonder which is better. I’ve been told by the flashy youngsters that I have gotten stale in my beliefs, that I do not accept change but… as I look at them today they make the same mistakes that were made countless times. But their enthusiasm is definitely something I could steal. Not once have I found myself in a pathetic state of ennui that these children would not even be able to spell, let alone feel.” True, the longer he lived the more comfortable he got himself. It was only when he was on earth not using his powers, when he tried to play the game of hiding among mortals and breaking their barriers because he just could that he felt alive. “The old is wonderful but when you look at the knew from the perspective of a child that got a new set of toys – which is my personal point of view, then you’ll find that the new is absolutely fascinating and fantastic to live in. Especially when you have a partner in crime.” He winked coquettishly at the fox.
In all honesty he was impressed by the kitsune’s answer though he’d be damned if he let it show. Right, this kid is worth some luck he decided in his mind though yet again he said nothing about it. “With your ambition, I can imagine you will grow all your tails soon. And perhaps you will surpass those before you and prove there can be one more tail. Wouldn’t that be fun?” He tilted his head, a playful gleam in his eyes. He’d love for that to happen as he was there to see it. He’d probably even take half the credit for it. With Haneul’s own questions a pearly laughter escaped his parted lips. “Me? I’m far too old for ambitions. My dream is simple – I want to observe and have fun. I want to help those seeking knowledge and see what they’ll do with what I give them. Honestly… my dream is meeting ones like you.” That wasn’t everything but the kitsune needed not know of the fully manipulative nature of the ancient beast. “Through my life I was pretty much everything, a friend, a student, a lover, an adviser, a jester… but I have never been a teacher. So I suppose… that would be a nice experience for me.” He hoped his hinting was obvious enough. He wasn’t exactly subtle but he noticed that people often took his words as general statements rather than his suggestions or hints. But this kid seemed bright and ambitious. And Kirin was bored. Being a teacher sounded like the perfect role to fight that.
Bright, tawny eyes observed the qilin. Awe was apparent in his expression, although unbeknownst to him. He held a great admiration for such formidable creatures, and this Kirin, he believed, was no exception. There was an underlying tone of power to him, Haneul could just sense it. There was wisdom and experience hidden past those eyes that the fox could only imagine to undergo himself. In a way, it was unsettling, to have a being worthy of such praise before him. Haneul was far more accustomed to being the most powerful creature in a room. It was a welcome change, though. Meeting Kirin would change the dull monotony of being surrounded by simpler, weaker creatures. He could be someone to draw knowledge from, sapping the rich nectar from the golden plant.
“It is much too hard. I presume more of the supernatural tuck away into these human forms. I cannot say there is much blame, seeing as I possess one, too. Humans are nasty to those to which they cannot fully understand. Still, it is rather lonely. It is not often that I sense such an.. overpowering presence about.” Being unable to flaunt his true form was upsetting to Haneul. It was unfair to him that he had to hide himself behind a mask in order to survive. It was necessary, he thought. Haneul had the misfortune of discovering just how cruel humanity could be and why he needed to conceal his vulpine figure. He was scared, though he wished he would never have to let that on. Such a powerful creature such as himself terrified of fragile humans? How pitiful.
“Yes, it is adapted. It may not be the most creative, but since it is a popular Korean name as well, it serves my purposes. It is obscured, while in plain sight.” The thought was interesting to him. If a human were to, somehow, piece together the pieces, it would be pleasing to him. While the hints were certainly there, they were not the most obvious, either. “Stale?” Haneul shot the other beast a quizzical glance. “I think that our beliefs should age like fine wine, rather than become stale like bread.” The concept was strange to the fox. More often than not, he was absorbing all of the knowledge that he possibly could. After a day of work, he would perch himself into a chair and settle down with a book that he had never perused before. He would not accept the possibility of his knowledge and intelligence being static. “It is true that their enthusiasm and energy is quite fascinating. There is still so much more for them to learn.” Haneul lowly chuckled to himself. “Even with my older age, however, I still find myself craving for more. So, perhaps, maybe I am not too different from the young after all..” Although he felt that at least that may be true, he still held by the fact that he was far more sophisticated and overall superior to the young. “I hadn’t thought of it in that way.” The fox admitted. It rang with some sense to him. Living for so long, it would be amusing to befriend and share ideas with creatures younger than himself. To even have someone look up in admiration at him, that would be worth it. The insinuation from the qilin is not lost to the fox, though.
“A partner in crime, you say?” Haneul was interested in the proposition and what it would entail. Surely, it would be rewarding with a qilin at his side. “It would be gratifying to be the first to achieve ten tails.” With the thought now planted into his mind, it grew, blooming into a small flower. With time, it may continue to grow. However, the fox could not help but to find himself beaming. His ego was being inflated to immeasurable heights. “I will try with all of my being and strength to be the first to gain the tenth tail. Whether it exists, I know not, but there has to be more than nine.. Nine is too simple to get.” The fact that he was still only on his sixth tail was irrelevant. Haneul believed that he would get to nine in no time at all -- he would make sure of it. Kirin’s revelation sent a shiver through Haneul’s body. “If it is me that you seek, then it is me that you will have. It would be an honor to be taken under your wing as a student. I would be very appreciative, in fact, to be taught all that you offer to me. In return, I will become the most diligent student.” To the fox, the offer seemed almost too good to be true. It would certainly be a surefire way to receiving all of his tails, plus one. “Do you think that you can teach me?”

《 ※ 》     IT HONESTLY DOESN’T kick in that he’s introduced himself by his Korean name until after the other male practically repeats it back to him. Too used to doing that back in Korea that being back in the states, he forgets that this was basically where he was from. American soil with an American name. Oh well, not like it was an issue or anything anyway, seeing how fluidly his name rolled off of the other male’s tongue without butchering it. ‘Too’ he says. Both brows quirk upwards, his expression soon shifting from that of concern due to having not checked the difficulty of the class he signed up for, to one of surprise. Sure, the states were known to be a melting pot of diversity and having lived in Korea for more than a decade now, one would assume he’d be able to tell who was Korean and who wasn’t. But here, one can never be one hundred percent certain.  ❝  Yeah, I actually am, but good to know you’re a friendly bunch. Don’t think I’d be able to handle it if you all weren’t.  ❞ A jest of course. He’d still show up despite the fact. Sure he wouldn’t enjoy himself as much if the people weren’t friendly, but as long as the routine, the choreography was able to envelop him and get him lost in each 8 count, he was good. He does, however, feel quite abashed by having not checked in advance on what class level this was. Proven even more when his hand extends upwards, curling around the nape of his neck and he’s gingerly rubbing it, eyes casting downwards at the hardwood floor. An embarrassed chuckle spilling from his lips.  ❝  Er—yeah, I totally didn’t check. I was in such a rush to get to a dance class, I didn’t really pay attention to what time which level of class started. ❞ But if it was advanced, then he should be fine. Though, in retrospect, he couldn’t recall whether the levels of difficulty differ from the states to Korea. He assumes they’re about the same level, right ? Guess he’ll just have to play it by ear when the instructor comes in.
❝  Uh——just here and there.  ❞ In comparison to how much I danced in college.  ❝  You ? Well, don’t answer that, I mean you’re a regular so of course you have. ❞ More laughter, more neck rubbing from embarrassment.
Jasper catches the joke and cannot help but to laugh a bit. “Hey, but you have to admit, it is definitely much better than if we were to be bullying you. You know, like hazing the new kid on the block.” It was common in grade school, if he recalled correctly. Kids would be unwelcoming to those they did not know. It was sad, really; he was thankful that he never seemed to be a target of such, at least to his knowledge. Jasper had always been so wrapped up in dancing that he would not have noticed. One good thing about being an adult was that this immature behavior tended to stop, so now that he was attentive enough to realize, it was far less likely to happen.
“You must really love dancing then.” He comments, an amused grin on his lips. “So desperate to dance you were willing to take anything you could get. I admire and understand that, really.” Dancing was an important aspect to his life. Whether Sangcheol was new to the world of dancing or not, Jasper appreciated his enthusiasm. Even if said enthusiasm proved to be a slight problem. At least it was not something too serious of an issue!
A low hum reverberates in his chest. Just here and there, huh? He wonders if it would really be okay for Sangcheol to stay in this class. “If you’re unsure if this class is right for you, I am sure you can get a refund still since it hasn’t started yet.” Jasper throws a glance to the clock on the side wall. Only three minutes left, though. If Sangcheol was going to get a refund, it was cutting it close. Still, it was certainly do-able in the time allotted.
“No, I have never danced before in my life.” Jasper entertains the other’s question again. He wants for him to be comfortable. Hopefully joking around offers him that and makes the situation less tense. If it were him, he would be nervous as well. New environments were never fun the first time around. “I come here to watch, and for those sick beats that I mentioned earlier.”
There is a click from the door, and the instructor of the class enters the dance room, tote bag in hand. Jasper’s gaze travels from the woman and back to Sangcheol, puffing a breath of air through his teeth. “That would be Miss Padilla, our instructor for today.” Her hair is tied up, and she quickly places her bag down, rifling through it. It is a signal that there is only a matter of time before the class starts.
