Was the role of Moritz very emotionally draining? I feel like doing that suicide monologue every night would be hard...

Very. But it was also nice to get out all that frustration.

Also, because I was voicing for Daniel, it felt like I had a support the entire time, and then come the suicide monologue, we were getting ripped apart from each other.

Also, my performance came from a place of wanting to take over. At the beginning, I don’t exist. He does the first scene without me. And then when he needs me in “Bitch,” I explode into the scene. But then, I grow attached to him. Whenever he tries to do things without his voice, his “voice” grows more present, and more loud (notice how his songs get more thrashy and angry as he gets closer to suicide.) When Moritz tries to speak with his father alone, he gets hit, and his voice hands him the gun. When he makes the decision to send me away during the suicide scene, it felt at first like I had “won.” I got him to follow through with suicide.

But when he sends me away, is when it gets sad. Yes, his inner voice “wins.” But when he gives up that part of himself, he’s giving up everything.

Phew. Got real actor-nerdy there. In some ways, his voice is his antagonist, I think. But also, a crucial part of him. The parts of himself he hates, and the parts of himself he wishes he was.

the only correct way to play the vineyard scene in the musical is for hanschen to be so flustered by how goddamn cute ernst is that he loses control of his mouth and starts saying the weirdest shit and then proceeds to completely freak out while ernst isn’t looking
