How does Otto's Dream Fluff/Psi-Pops Work? [theories tangent]

[ Note: I am not an expert on mediums of comparison [proper placebos, coffee, medication, etc], nor do I know how you can bring physical objects into the mindscape to begin with Do not expect this to go deep into the scientific. ]

The most reliable way to regain mental health, Dreamfluff and Psi-pops are a very common and strong staple in most people's playthroughs of both Psychonauts: but how do they work?

In no particular order, here are three 3 [4?] options, and the Pros and Cons of it functioning like this, and [separately] what this may mean for those who use psi-sweets.

A: Psi-sweets actively have stored energy that can convert quickly into mental health. [external source for consumers.]

Pros: This is the most obvious answer, and easy to wrap around. You consume the psi-sweet, and you get as much energy as it has stored. Could possibly work like consuming something like a kiwi [which gives someone serotonin.] Leaves Otto being upfront about how his product works.

Cons: This leaves us guessing how the mental energy [or the chemicals that can break down into mental energy] forms, and how is it consumable. Mostly a mystery.

B: Psi-sweets are a placebo effect that tricks the consumer's mind into restoring the project.

Pros: This makes it impossible for someone to overdose on Psi-sweets, (Bonus: and can explain their price range, since they are pretty cheap in both games.)

Cons: It does not explain why Dreamfluff [in particular] has/had such a dramatic animation in both PN1 + 2, and how the mental health is recovered. It also means that those who knows it's a placebo likely won't have any effect, but because we never see anyone but Raz use psi-sweets, we don't have any resources to compare to. If psi-sweets are a placebo, that means at the very least, Otto is creating a product that doesn't work; and Otto could be taxing on the user's mind.

C: Psi-sweets act like medicine, creating chemical reactions that make the brain produce more mental energy. [internal source for consumer]

Pros: In theory, this allows it to be the most scientifically explain. It could function like coffee, blocking receptors in the mind/commanding the body to produce more mental health; or it could work like a painkiller. Either way, this one could likely be compared the easiest to other resources like what we have in the real world.

Cons: Like any medicine, there could be a lethal dose that we/Raz do not know about. Having a seemingly uncontrolled drug that is both offered for a price to children, and colorful candy is morally dark... This could leave Otto the most liable for legal issues, and have the most consequences.

D: [mix of A and C] Psi-sweets are advertised as an external source of mental energy, but are a internal source.

This is my skeptic/reddit theory-esk theory- but this leads into the following:

The consequences of each:

A or C: regardless of the means [internal or external], there is a likely risk consumers could become dependant on Psi-sweets to recover mental health. We are given NO information if there is a lethal dose of psi-sweets, hell, we don't even know if the pouches Otto sells to carry them hold one "safe dose" or several. (for all we know, they could be for agents who need/want mental health stashes over several day missions). Otto has the possibly to be upfront about what they do, or the possibly to be underselling the dangers of using them.

B: If they are placebos, that means Otto is maliously marketing them to people for profit for a product that doesn't work. It's either tricking people's minds to expend more mental health then they should on a single mental projection, or makes them believe they need the psi-sweets to recover without taking down mental entities [Granted, I think this is the least likely, I doubt the Psychonauts would let Otto sell a product that does nothing- but if he's the only one who knows- well, this could be the biggest scam to ever exist.]

D: This one, I'd argue, has the most intentional malous attached. Incorrect knowledge of how something works could lead to accidental or intental abuse by anyone who consumes a psi-sweet. Seriously- it's like believing coffee prevents you from being sleepy because it 'wakes you up', but it actually prevents you from being tired by blocking the hormos that make you tired. This could be taxing on anyone's mental health. Otto would be at best enacting gross negligence and lying about a product, at worse he could be responsible for anyone who was negatively affected by his psi-sweets. [We/Raz lack the knowledge to know what mental energy does outside of restore/stablize mental projections- but considering seemingly everything in the mindscape contains it- it is almost certainly a vital building block of the human psychic.]

Regardless of how they work, more questions should be raised about their functionality.

Couldn't tell ya really. But I do think those mods were on edge, generally. I could swear ONE had it out for me, but hey. I get to laugh about it now XD ALSO, I don't mind drawing toebeans ^^

Poor wording. I'm animating in my free time. But Preparing With knows about this. And I'm head writer, so I like knowing what the audience wants XD so if you spot something that feels targeted (in good humor), it is.
