the Luisa/Isabela merch thing is so funny to me but for reasons not everyone seems to understand. Like, it’s not that people don’t want Isabela merch, it’s that Disney marketed her in (accidentally?) the worst possible way
In case you don’t know, Disney Execs overstocked on Isabela merch as they expected her to be the breakout star of the film, except it’s not selling as well as they hoped. What is selling is Luisa merch– a lot of Luisa merch, actually, they keep selling out! (After this and the Namaari stuff I hope the execs get it through their skulls that buff women are good.) There’s a ton of funny memes about this but a few of the ones I’m seeing are kinda coming off as sexist– “we want the masculine girl and not the feminine one” vibes, ignoring the fact that Luisa is actually pretty feminine in characterization– as well as the fact that people are looking for merch of other feminine characters, such as Dolores and Pepa.
Cause the thing is, it’s not that people don’t want merch of Isabela, it’s that Disney overstocked on the wrong Isabela merch.
We find out in the movie that Isabela doesn’t like being reduced to the pretty one, the flowery one, the perfect one. With how quickly she stains her dress during her song, she doesn’t seem to like the color much either. Isabela is happy when making weird plants– cacti and sundew and “strangling figs,” giant trees and colorful, asymmetrical leaves. This is shown both overtly with her song and implicitly– before her revelation, she’s in a purpleish-pink, while the rest of her side of the family is blue. The more redder shade is likely to imitate Abuela Alma, who is color-coded in red. But after Isabela’s revelation, she first dresses in a splatter-paint dress that seems mainly black, and at the end of the film she excitedly changes into a dark blue dress, now matching her sisters and parents. This visually shows her change, and how she’s shed the image of someone she’s not in order to become herself.
It’s not unusual for Disney not to market spoilery outfits when the movie first drops. If you think back to 2019-2020, those Snow Queen Elsa and Queen Anna outfits didn’t drop for several months. So I’m not saying that the fact she’s in pink in the merch is complete proof that the execs didn’t get the message. The proof, though, is that all of her merch completely relies on the pink and the flowers.
Here’s some stuff I’ve seen everywhere in the last couple months (apparently not selling):
ID: Three images of Isabela merch. The first is a “Isabela Garden Room Playset,” which is colored in nothing but bright pinks and purples, with lots of petals. The next image is a pink t-shirt showing a silhouette of Isabela, with purple flowers overlaid and a cursive spelling of her name underneath her. The shirt is titled “Beautiful Isabela.” The next image is of a white-tshirt of Isabela smiling and holding a purple flower as more flowers surround her, with the text “Magical and Fantastical.” End ID.
See, that’s the thing, it’s not that Isabela is feminine– again, Aurora and Rapunzel are decked out in pink and purple and they still make Disney big bucks. It’s that Isabela, in-canon, does not like being viewed as the beautiful flower princess.
So here’s the thing with people who’ve seen the movie and want to get merch. Kids who like Isabela aren’t going to want her in the flowery appearance because that was when she wasn’t happy– or, if they’re not really old enough to process character stuff, they’ll think of it as “when she was mean.” Adult collectors aren’t going to want her flowery appearance because that was when she was unhappy and constrained, so they’re going to wait for the merch to drop of her in the black or blue dress.
Disney Execs, however, were fully convinced that she was going to sell because she was the pretty pink flower princess. So that’s what’s in all her merch, and that’s why it’s not selling, because that’s not who Isabela is. And then at the same time, they thought nobody would want Luisa merch bc ew girl with muscles… except she’s one of the most popular characters bc she’s a good character. The cousins they aren’t marketing are super popular as well because, oh yeah, this is a good movie with good characters and we like them for that reason and not just because of their appearance.
The best analogy I can come up with for this is: imagine if, in Frozen, we also didn’t know Elsa had ice powers and anxiety until the coronation. After the movie drops, Disney only sells Elsa in her coronation dress, overstocks on that, and ignores every other character. Yeah that’s what they’re doin rn
tl;dr Disney Execs are dumb as shit just start marketing Isabela as the deranged cactus sister and you’ll start seeing an upswing in sales probably

Bruno: *has come out of Hiding and is being asked about prophecies again*
his family: "welp time for Diversions"
someone asking for an official prophecy? sorry, his tower is broken and Casita can't get into his room oh NO there's nowhere else in the house where he can have his visions hey look Felix and Agustín need him 😔
what's your life looking like in 10 years? whoops, Isabella needs Bruno to help her and Luisa clean up flower petals and they accidentally end up in a braiding circle for hours how tragic
hey you gave me a prophecy i didn't like how dare you? oh no now there's two Brunos and they're running off in different directions on an unrelated note Camilo returns looking very smug
group of people coming to see Bruno? Mirabel and Dolores conveniently ask their tío about his newest telenovela idea and now he's not talking about anything else because he has so many ideas and his nieces are so excited to hear what he's planning
questions about an event that's going to happen? Alma needs Bruno to join her and his sisters for a Family Meeting which is code for We Need To Talk About Things aka Cry and Hug time
anything else? Antonio breaks out the Eyes and now Bruno has his arms full of Adorable Nephew and isn't allowed to do anything except cuddle
just Bruno being allowed to be someone other than the guy who gives prophecies and being allowed to spend time with his family without having to worry about disappointing anyone

Don't think about Mirabel back in the nursery after her ceremony (don't think about the box on the floor of the things she refuses to unpack)
Don't think about her hearing Abuela rage at anyone around
Don't think about Camillo sneaking in with party food for her
Don't think about Luisa throwing her around in the days to follow, trying to get a laugh
Don't think about Dolores teaching her songs and sewing and painting, any kind of distraction she can think of (Don't think about how she wants Mirabel to have something to call a talent)
Don't think about Abuela refusing to acknowledge Mirabel for days
Don't think about Julietta pleading with her mother to "think about this reasonably!"
Don't think about Felix and Augustin yelling at Casita, begging for an answer that it cannot give
Don't think about Pepa hiding away in her room to make sure she won't spoil the sunshine, because Mirabel deserves *something* nice
Don't think about the hundreds of flowers Isa didn't grow, not wanting to flaunt the magic that somehow she deserved more than her little sister
Definitely don't think about how, with all the attention, negative and positive, the one thing Mirabel won't stop thinking about it why Tio Bruno was so upset with her that he abandoned them all
Definitely don't think about that.

Hello! As someone that dumpster dives year-round and usually finds a SHIT TON of perfectly usable items thrown away after the holidays, please listen:
Christmas is over and now comes along the weeks of people returning and exchanging unwanted gifts at retailers. A lot of these stores cannot actaully put a lot of these items back out on the shelf, (especially seasonal items or holiday themed) for one reason or another. Returned brand new items end up in landfills.
This is not only horribly wasteful when good items could be used by people in need, but also insanely bad for the enviroment.
So please consider:
Did you get insane amounts of those fluffy socks because they're like a default gift option? Donate your excess to a homeless or domestic violence saftey shelter.
Did you recieve a gift that is pretty much a jab to your identity from that estranged family member of yours that still doesn't use the correct pronouns for you? Oh, and they wont give you or 'lost' the receipt? Donate it.
Recieved those oddly named holiday themed lotions, perfumes and candles and can't stand the smell of them? These items most usually will not be put back on the shelf if returned and thrown away. Donate them. (Some charities may not accept them, some will. Check beforehand.)
Did you get one of those holiday throw blankets that are marketed just for this time of the year even though you already have several? Donate it.
I find tons of holiday themed clothing thrown away this time of year. Including ugly sweaters, hats/beanies, gloves, onesies, shoes, socks, ect. Perfectly fine items that are returned because people don't keep holiday themed stuff outside of holiday season. Regardless, they could be used by people who need warm clothing.
Electronics are not safe either. Perfectly working Items I have found in dumpsters in the past range from: a $300 roomba with the ticket saying it was returned because the customer didn't know how to work it (needed an app to control), not one but TWO tablets (Samsung and Kindle Fire) a working bluetooth speaker, ect. (Items that can not be donated I gave away.)
If you are not going to regift unwanted gifts and you are certain you are not going to use it, please consider donating it (or make a post and just give it away or sell the thing yourself.) You can go get $15 worth of store credit if you return the thing, but it's usually going straight to the trash afterwards.
Unfortunatly, stores like to try and destroy items they throw away as well. On lucky days, I find items that are still in their original package. Other times I find perfectly usuable items destroyed by spray paint or box cutters.
(ALSO this is not a post shaming people who return gifts for money to pay bills/buy food/basically survive. That is a completely different situation.)
Please research the places you donate to before doing so. Do not donate to the Salvation Army (despite them trying to do reputation control, they're still blatantly anti-LGBTQ) If you are a dumpster diver, remember to sanitize the items you find and let the organizations know where you recieved the items.
That's it. Thanks for coming to my soapbox!

Kinda meta how U.S. audiences have been heaping praise on South Korean film & TV critiquing SK hypercapitalism without any apparent awareness or reflection of how their country has helped build said hypercapitalism through war, occupation, militarization, structural adjustment
The US invaded to preserve capitalism in SK, then built its industries to supply US military interventions in SEA, prop up Japan as a regional bulwark against communism, and be a forever buyer of US weapons. This is not some essential "Asiatic capital" that exists out of context
