Indian : Arrived
A girl is walking on the street and you’ll see a score of heads turning to scan her from top to toe. Some of these heads will also dare to take a step forward and pass lewd remarks about her. This is a commonplace scenario on any given day in any part of the country. A couple of days back, Karnataka’s “moral police” were arrested on the grounds of threatening girls in a Mangalore pub. According to them, the girls clad in jeans and ‘mixing with people of other faith’ needed to be taught a lesson. This is the kind of attitude we still have in our country. Somehow, even after evolving considerably as a nation, the basic mentality of a majority of the people remains inarguably immutable. However, it wouldn’t be fair to judge the entire country on this sole parameter. India as a nation is sure developing and how? India’s first baby steps in the world of astronomy led to Chandrayyan I. The Indo-nuke deal and the IT revolution are yet other examples of how India is fast emerging as a powerful nation in the global arena. Today our country is at par with all its international counterparts—be it in sports, entertainment, politics—India is leaving its mark in just about everything. While on one hand, A.R.Rahman has made India proud by being one of the fore runners in the battle for the Oscars this year, on the other hand, Omar Abdullah, all of 38, has become the youngest chief minister of the country. With an overwhelming majority of the Indian population being under 25 years of age, perhaps it is not very surprising that the youth is finally making its presence felt in all spheres of activity. The youth today does not believe in wasting time over baseless superstitions and irrational shibboleth. They believe in imploring and finding out the truth and abiding by it. The hangover from the 26/11 attack is for everyone to see. The Indian youth has made it quite clear that they are no longer going to lie in wait for the so-called “leaders” of the society to act. It is now our turn to become the harbingers of change and fight against the brutal inhuman terrorism. Today we bid answers from our ‘leaders’ and the new brigade of young techno-savvy politicians like Sachin Pilot, Omar Abdullah, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Rahul Gandhi look like they are here to stay. The best way to describe India today would be a land of opportunities with apprehensions, a land of development with caution, and a way of life which is a heady concoction of cultures and traditions.
