i've changed my map's language to Spanish - and it still does this!!! usually it's a pretty neutral latin american accent, but if i stuff up and it has to redirect me enough times (happens a lot haha), a very unimpressed sounding Spain Spanish lady takes over and honestly it feels like i'm being reprimanded :')

Language update!! I’ve been smashing out hours of immersion, and I’ve finished my Spanish unit for uni (haha literally in a bachelor of nursing, I know 😭), so I’m starting to think I’d really like to do a bit more speaking practice. BUT I fear there is literally 0 culture of learning Spanish in Australia, so it’s a bit hard to find people irl to do a little “language exchange” with.

I’ve tried a few platforms online, but it seems like at least on the free ones, people tend to treat them like dating apps. So not that much luck so far, but honestly I’d be happy to pay a bit for a community tutor so that’s always an option.

just realizing i never followed up on my psych nursing clinical post :( i've finished up now, but oh man - there are some cracking stories that came out of that. But once again, I absolutely fell in love with the ward, team, and patients, and was so so so grateful to found found a career that fills my heart. and i was blown away by how much i absolutely loved the experience of psychiatric nursing. it's so different, but so interesting, exciting, and rewarding - also hugely misunderstood, and i could talk about that for ages.

once again, had a little cry in may car after my last shift. once again, got sick as a dog towards the end and thugged it out. 10/10 would absolutely consider specializing later down the track. Once again, am pretty pissed at having made almost $0 in the last months working full time hours... but oh, well.

okay, clinicals starting up again tomorrow - and far out, I’m so nervous. If it was a normal nursing placement, I’d be totally fine. But psych nursing is a totally different ball game, and to mix thing up even more - I’ve been placed in the “highest acuity” setting possible, along with only 1 (!) other student.

I know it’ll be okay: and I actively want to challenge myself, so this is a *good* thing, even if it feels like a scary one right now. I also do genuinely want to do whatever I can to help people who are at their most vulnerable. It’s just hard when it’s totally different to everything I’ve known and done before. anyway: next time you hear from me, I’ll be 1/15 of the way there!!! Till then <3

On April 16th 2025 the US federal government has proposed to change the interpretation of the endangered species act so that it no longer protects habitat.

This is open for public comment until the end of May 19th. Please comment and make your voice heard.

Wildlife need their habitat. If the ESA redefines harm so that habitat is no longer protected, the implications for wildlife would be catastrophic.

And I’m not sure it just stops with the slogan…

in a county where both main political parties have always been pretty similar and pretty central, please take a minute to consider how catastrophic it could be to cast a careless vote and bring in someone who wishes to emulate the American republican government. I guarantee any tiny “hills” liberal presents aren’t worth dying on.

guys it’s almost clinical time again!!!! And this time is a psych ward placement- so it should be a bit of fun. Honestly I’m not too worried this time around, but I have worked out that it will cost me about $3500AUD in time off work and $30 per day parking fees. Terrible deal for full time work hours, but not optional, I fear…

oh well. I quite liked my last log ((and it’s actually come in handy a few times since haha)), so I reckon I’ll do it again. 3 weeks this time - so 15 entries. Get hyped!!!!!

okay when i say i have actually been squandering the time i should be putting towards my BN on doing spanish study, i'm not exaggerating. Any implications are a problem for me in the future. Having heaps of fun with this!!

And ironically, it's actually been pretty useful??? Not because I know anyone spanish-speaking, but there's a huge community of Italian immigrants around where I live - and i get quite a lot of older, Italian speaking patients. And while I can't hold a conversation in the slightest lol, a lot of words sound similar enough that I can usually understand what they're after (or at least take a good guess haha). But aAaaauugh i love lanugaes so much <3333

set myself the clinically insane goal of learning another language this year (obviously not to fluency, but as good as i realistically can) around working 30 hour weeks and studying full time. Loving it, as expected, but it's hard to get past the mental 'This Isn't English, So Say It In German' block. I absolutely butcher speaking because my brain automatically slaps a german accent onto anything in a foreign language, and mixed with my natural australian accent... yeah. not great. only way from here is up tho!!!! and it's nice (even if time consuming...) to have a passion project again :))!

I think everyone should work a late shift at least once in their lives simply to romanticize the late night drive home on a dark empty road with the windows down while the graveyard shift DJ on the local radio station plays the most incredible and unusual music you've ever heard.
