I tried to add dialogue, though every time I did, it seemed too cheesy to me. In the end, I think having no dialogue was more effective.

How much did Sang-mi change from the original concept you thought of to what we first see? Was she wildly different or was there no change at all?

Sang-mi herself didn't change that much. She's a bit more of a adrenaline junkie and more physically fit (you'll see) than she was initially and she was actually supposed to be straight and getting an unrequited crush on Silver of all people. But then Lanolin was just too perfect for a major gay awakening so I went with that route instead.

That said she was always rather traditional, kind and very protective of Surge.

What REALLY changed from the initial draft in my mind (way before ideas of getting crushes on ANYONE or even before I had Sang-mi’s personality down) was Surge's reaction to Sang-mi. In the initial idea she rejected her completely.

Yup, Jade Branch started its life in my brain as an angst story about a tenrec finding her long lost sister, only for her to not only have no memory of her but also not giving two fucks about her, going so far as not even believing her.

A short story of discovery and heartbreak.

Needless to say, I'm happy that I'm such a weak bleeding heart fluff writer that I couldn't go through with it.

Design wise, I didn't have a design in mind until I scrapped the initial angst idea but after that it didn't really change since I knew that I wanted someone who looked so much like Surge that she couldn't doubt if she really was her sister or not.

EDIT: Can't forget RavenSeeker's art which really brought her style of clothing out beyond "light summer dress".

That also meant that Mimic had to be dead in the AU so that Surge wouldn't be paranoid of a octopus scheme. Again, I wanted Surge to have no reason to second guess who Sang-mi was so I could focus on the reunion.
