Iroh says Aang gives Zuko hope and like, 10/10, love that
But I feel like the mirror of this is overlooked alot, or at least I don't see a lot of talk abt it.
Zuko is Aang's hope.
Zuko is the representation of the enemy, but Aang knows he's also just a kid, or teenager, like Aang, and he's someone who reminds Aang of Kuzon, one of his best friends. To Aang, Zuko is everything the fire nation is to him, something familiar and dear to his heart that's been twisted almost beyond recognition.
If Aang can see good in Zuko, if Aang can bring the good out from Zuko, then there is hope for the rest of the firenation. In his day, the fire nation people were friends, and in the modern day, they are enemies. If he can be friends with Zuko, that means there's hope that he can have just a piece of his old world back, even if it looks a little different.
Aang can never go back. He can never get his old family back, he can't truely revive what was lost, only preserve it with hopes it can be revived in the future. He can't undo geological changes, he can't rewrite history, but there's one thing of his old world he hopes he can still have, and that is friendship that trancends borders and cultures.
Nobody represents that more than Zuko, the person who Aang wants to be friends with like the old days, but cannot because of the war. Being friends with Zuko, a blatent act of defiance against the war and all it has changed and damaged, is the biggest connection Aang gets to the world he once knew since he got frozen in the iceberg.
Aang gives Zuko hope, but Zuko is Aang's hope.

if silly fanfic can’t be considered the best piece of literature you’ve ever read, then why Turn ? why Away Childish Things ? why Running on Air ? why Dwelling ? why The Man Who Lived ? why Reparations ? why The Bolthole ? why Grounds for Divorce ?

i think that if you were to make a goncharov movie it couldn't just be goncharov. nothing can truly be goncharov. my ideal goncharov movie is a mockumentary about the comically troubled production of a failed 2020s goncharov remake, touching on themes of nostalgia and the way we remember (and misremember) and retell stories

My boyfriend just woke up, mostly still asleep and told me “don’t worry, it’s getting better” in a heavy, American accent, which is unusual for an Australian man.
“Why are you American?” I asked, to which I got:
“Sorry, it’s getting better” in a stereotypical posh English accent.
“Why are you English?” I asked, amused.
“What is he normally?” He managed to ask.
“He? You’re not anyone else, you’re you.”
“Ugh, me” was the last thing he said, in a right proper Aussie accent before he fell back into proper sleep.

Since telling my Mum that I considered myself ace, I already noticed that she was a bit… too interested, if you want to say it like that. Asking for “signs”, or how being ace feels like… I tried to answer her to the best of my ability, giving her links to websites that would explain better as I ever could.
Today she said, very quietly, “Do you think I could be ace, too?”
And I said very carefully “If you think it suits you, I don’t see why not”
And my Mum, my strong, self-confident Mum, who never once  has ever felt uncomfortable in her own skin as far as I know, beamed in relief. Relief.
Because she never knew. Because getting married young and bearing children for her husband (meaning sex) was expected of her. Because everyone gave her the feeling as if something would be wrong or broken about her if she didn’t want, didn’t do that.
Because her whole life long, she thought there was something wrong with her.
I’m honestly torn between feeling happy and relieved for her, and angry that humanity has such trouble with showing some understanding to those who don’t fit in the boxes society has designed for all of us.

The way that Emma has deep-seated emotional fear of being thrown away? The way she looks at Regina for guidance when her spell tells her Regina is responsible?? The way Regina "took her victory like poison" bc her victory was Emma's chronic inability to maintain faith??? The way Regina begs Emma to stop trying to take the anti-magic cuff off, to let whatever's going to happen to her happen, bc Emma is dying???? The way the Evil Queen says "I was the part of you that was hard so you could stay soft, and you cut me out when you didn't need me anymore"?????
And now im supposed to watch season 6 of the goddamn show??

i looooove characters who are sacrificial lamb coded. characters who have never lived for themselves. characters born to be a tool, a weapon, a sacrifice, all of the above. a character raised by the heroes to save the world, at any expense, even their own health, even their own life. a character raised by the villains to end the world, at any expense, even their own health, even their own life. characters who are denied personhood so they can be used as tools instead. characters who never even had a chance to be people because they were shaped into something else from the moment they were born. characters who were born to die.

I'm curious given how often I see "none of the characters were good/likeable/lovable" as a criticism or reason not to recommend a book

"menstruation is punishment for original sin" is a fairly common doctrine (altho in my experience it's usually more implicit than just baldly stated like that)
anyway this implies that of all the animal kingdom, humans are not UNIQUE in sinning, but are joined by bats, the elephant shrew, and the spiny mouse species Acomys cahirinus. (according to my 5 seconds on wikipedia at least)

i think maybe goodreads reviewers are the enemy of art. this is a humorous overexaggeration but in reality i cannot convey how many top-rated reviews ive read that gave one or two stars for reasons that boil down to "the main character did something ethically wrong and was not punished for it." forgive me for being a judgemental bitch but if you dedicate a significant amount of time and energy to reviewing novels, i do not think i should have to sit you down and explain from the ground up what a "narrative" is.
