'love at first sight' (and 'denial') would probably be the only way to describe their first interaction, considering Barok chose to take the mcgilded case thinking 'oh look, another nasty creature from that far Eastern island who is potentially about to commit another array of atrocities in my nation. I must do something.'

that together with mcgilded as the accused (a person he obviously hated, and one he knew would absolutely get out by underhand means), it was cut and dry for Barok in terms of how to feel and what to expect. but those assumptions ended up futile, considering ryuu didn't end up being the crooked, immoral and selfish person he had expected him to be. there are multiple points in the omnibus case where he is perplexed by ryuu's choice to state what he himself thinks than try to hide the truth. not only is he intrigued by this, but he is also reminded of a figure he once deeply appreciated. he knows there is something else about him, from the course of that one trial alone. well, he is right, and in the last case, ryuu ends up saving his life. maybe through barok's perspective, it's almost like he came into his life solely to free him.

and after everything has been revealed, he can start over again: not as the Reaper, or a man living in his dead brother's shadow, but as himself.

this is true for ryuu as well. He is no longer the alienated foreigner carrying out the will of his late best friend, but a lawyer on his own merits.

these two have so much they can bond over, and they've both played a huge role in each other's lives in the one year they'd known each other. they understand each other intuitively as you've mentioned, think and believe in pretty much the same. both of them have lived in someone else's image until they met. their lives changed because of their meeting.
