Reflection

During the IFE design journey, I have a deep understanding about how the design process works and bring all the processes together. Getting familiar with the double diamond framework and knowing what we should do in each step are the key things I learned in the project. Meanwhile, I’ve experienced different design programs to bring varieties into my IFE design, there are more possibilities that can be explored when collaborating different programs together. I focus on observing and learning micro animations on the devices, then try to refer them into my animation. In my observation, I realised micro animations can provide a better experience to the users, all the little details can bring a huge effect in the user's subconscious. Therefore, I’ve had more than two user tests after class, to observe how people are going to work on my design and get feedback from their behaviour. In the very first field, I need to collect as much information about Air NZ as I can, looking for what kind of services they already existed and listing all the problems they may have. Understanding the current situation of the company is a significant part in the discovery section, find out the correct direction you should focus in the future work, then keep following down. In my design process, I am not only searching data online, but also interviewing some people who actually have the flight experiences. Therefore, I interviewed my co-workers and international friends who all have the long-time trip experience before, collecting the idea of IFE as my database. According to the interview, I found that almost 90% of people consider sleeping as the most important “entertainment” during a long-time trip. However, they always can not have a comfortable rest since the lack of space and the other distraction. Referring to the services that Air NZ already have, they provide a sky couch for passengers to lay down and in-flight exercises list on board, comfortable seating is the main direction they always work hard for. Therefore, I intend to solve the problem of bad resting from the uncomfortable seating, and try my best to provide a better environment for the passengers.I listed all the possibilities that I can design for helping Air NZ to provide a better sleeping environment for the passengers on Miro. After all, I intend to focus on the basic needs of the passengers. Lighting and chair position are the two main requirements to have a relaxing sleep on board. The lighting setting of my lamp inspired me to design a multi lighting mode on screen, the users not only can alter the brightness of the screen light, but also choose a different lighting mode of their head light over the seat. In terms of the chair, I would like to design a chair that can be controlled to alter the position by the passengers, but it is hard to achieve when we consider the limitations of space and technology. After some research, I found the chair with a foot pad is the best solution. The foot pad can be controlled by different angles, the passengers can either sit up or lay down. We have twice users testing in class to get some feedback and suggestions, at the same time, we can get some inspiration from the other works. I feel the feedback I get is helpful for me to keep improving my animation. In the first test, I got some suggestions about the design of both night and day modes of the screen, since my main function is sleeping mode, the brightness alteration is one of the significant parts in my animation. Therefore, I refer to the devices I am using to set up an auto brightness alteration on the screen, it will change the brightness following the environment changing. In terms of the second one, I got more feedback about the micro animations. They are more focused on the icon animation I made before. Beside my classmates, I have done a few user testing of my friends who don’t know much about interaction design, their feedback includes more value and aspects of normal passengers. They will focus on what they are interested in rather than the small animations that give me a lot of suggestions about what kind of information they want on screen. Meanwhile, I observed their behaviour when they used the animation. I keep improving my animation, following where they press and what kind of behaviour they have.

I refered to his video to make my IFE video, I found it looks really nice in the plane mock up, but I can find any free plane mock up online. So I decided to modeling by myself. I’ve learned C4D before, so I know some basic process to make 3d model
