Tips for Taking Efficient Notes in Class
…and just in time for school!
1. Always go to class. If you skip class it will take you twice as long to study in order to make up for what you missed. It’s a lot easier to just take notes in class as opposed to scrambling to gather together the information later. 2. Gather the right materials. Laptops are highly recommended for note taking since it’s so easy to become overwhelmed by the quality and legibility of your notes. You can also type much faster than you write, meaning you can afford to take down more detail. For classes like math where you will need to write down equations have a notebook handy. Write “Figure 1” or even a symbol in your typed notes so you can add it in later. (It’s nearly impossible to type up an equation during a lecture.) 3. Type up summaries of your notes at the end of the week. (Or after each lecture if you find that more efficient.) This is one way to not only organize your notes in a manner that makes it easier to study for upcoming tests… Just this act alone is a form of studying in itself! 4. Get folders or binders for every class. I personally choose to use binders because I do some hella organization, but one folder for each class is perfectly fine. I don’t carry every binder with me to class so I have one folder to collect all the papers I gather during the day to sort into the binders later. 5. Take smart notes in nontechnical courses.
Identify the big ideas – these courses focus on them through explanation, comparison, contrast, and reevaluation in light of new evidence.
Focus on trying to pick out from lecture what is important and what is superfluous (some professors just drone on and on, completely off topic).
Format your notes aggressively. Make sure you always date and title notes. If you’re using a laptop, make a directory for each class, saving each note session with the date in the title. Use abbreviations and whatever else will help make things pop out at you (ex: bold definitions, underline key things, boxes, etc.) A bulk of text with no formatting is not only boring to read but it makes it extremely tedious to quickly pull out important information.
Capture big ideas by “question/evidence/conclusion” structure. Even if the professor doesn’t explicitly state the question, write down “question:” and fill it in later. If you can’t extract the conclusion, either, do the same thing to fill it in when you find it during a lull in the lecture or after class. Spend a few minutes after class going over, adding to, and revising your notes… trust me, it’s worth it if you have the time.
The “discussion exception”: Since class discussion tends not to be organized, clearly jot down the topic, classmate responses that you find insightful, your own acumen you plan to add, and especially anything the professor has to add.
6. Take smart notes in technical courses. Technical courses like maths and sciences require a completely different approach than courses such as English and history.
Record as many sample problems demonstrated during lecture as possible. You may not be able to record every single one (though you should definitely try), but as long as you can get one solid example down, you should be fine.
Decide whether or not you should read before class. If you have the time, you should try and read, or at least skim through the chapter(s). If you can read before class, instead of learning the material fresh, you will be primed and ready… The lecture becomes more of a review which will only help you in the long run. But whether or not you read, always bring it to class if you can. If you have a pdf of your textbook (message me and I can try and help you with that) either bring it on a tablet or print it out. We all know it’s not the most realistic idea to try and lug around hefty textbooks.
Prioritize your note-taking. Record the problem statement and answer. If you can’t finish writing all the steps skip to the answer and fill it in later. Always question anything you find to be confusing (save for later if can’t ask in class). Be sure you record the steps of the sample problem above all else, but still try to record other examples if time permits. Annotate those steps and include what they accomplish/why they’re important to solving the problem.
I hope this helps! These tips are inspired by Cal Newport’s books with some added insight on my part. See my other posts on studying here and stay tuned for even more study tips to come this week!

Hey (: Who knows what person is going to read this but, now that I'm this close to college a lot of feelings and things are coming to my mind. Excitement, nervousness and stress at the same time. How am I going to survive? I'll make posts more often because even though no one reads me it is comfortable (:

It’s Ya Girl’s College Scholarship Masterpost
Hello internet civilians! As some of you may or may not know, my name is Dana and I am a high school senior that is ALWAYS on the prowl for trying to get to college for as cheap as possible. I’ve come across 1000′s of scholarships that I simply don’t qualify for, so I thought “hey, why not share these with random people on the internet that don’t know where to start?” You asked the question and only answers you shall receive.
Please remember to credit me for this masterpost because I spent a lot of time and energy on it :)
PLEASE ALSO REMEMBER THAT A SCHOLARSHIP IS WORTHLESS IF YOU DO NOT APPLY FOR IT.
SO DO NOT JUST SAVE THIS POST IN YOUR DRAFTS AND NEVER USE IT. ACTUALLY WRITE AN ESSAY OR FOUR
