Introduction to the Internet ITNW1337 TD001
Introduction to the Internet ITNW1337 TD001
I started this class to improve my abilities and performance with the computer system and the complete operations of them. The first thing in this class was talking about the Internet. The Internet is basically millions of networks talking to each other, I did not know this. I figured that the government was in total control of the Internet and pages viewed. Knowing that there basically is no one in control of the Internet amazes me because it works so well. When I read that the Government built the Internet which was basically supposed to be a government type of communication during a nuclear attack surprised me. I know the government has a very high tolerance for technology but WOW the Internet is one of them.
There is also software that helps us search the internet for specific information that we are looking for. My favorite is Google Chrome, but there are plenty more and even from different countries. The search feature is easy to use. You can just type in a word and the computer software that you are using sends spiders through the web to find the top information that fits the search word. You can even type in multiple words or even sentences. The Internet will look at each word inputted into the search box and gives you a return from every word with the top one showing the results of most of the words you typed. This is done by a search engine using their Algorithms. A web browser opens pages that the search engine found.
Govinfo is a good program for finding information about the top three branches of the government. The different ways to search and especially the advance search is great. I would probably never use this search engine because I do not deal with anything that deals with the government. But some of the ways that their software works you can implement into your searching. I would concentrate on my searches using keywords so I can get the best results. The following is a video of searching the Internet https://youtu.be/LVV_93mBfSU?si=Si5PGLfd0W2_ec5_ . The next thing I would like to talk about is social media. Social Media comes in all forms but to me the best one is Facebook. My wife uses KAKOA talk which is an app from Japan, but she can connect with her family and friends in South Korea using text and video conferencing. Back to Facebook, I really enjoy all the amenities that come with this software. The rating is number one in the world, and I can see why. I used this a lot when I was deployed out of the country to keep in touch with my family and friends.
You can make a post that they all can see, or you can privately message them whichever you prefer. You can upload pictures as well as call them by phone or video. There is another topic that is important which is the cloud. I’m talking about the computer cloud not the ones in the sky. If you do not want to store a lot of pictures or downloaded music on your computer, you can store them on the cloud. You can also use the cloud as a Data backup for your computer. The cloud is a bunch of servers with the sole purpose is to hold information in a secure place. This link will explain more about the Cloud  https://youtu.be/4OO77HFcCUs . When you start up an e-mail account say for instance Hotmail. The e-mails that you send and receive are basically stored on an eternal server not on your computer. This way you can get your e-mails on any device anytime.
This module concentrates on e-mail, cloud, and transfer files. I find that the e-mail section is very interesting, especially when it talks about the different ways to send a message to a person. Like the To line will send an e-mail to all participants that you put an e-mail address in for. The cc line is Carbon copy that will send the e-mail to additional participants that are not the primary audience, basically giving them a FYI. The last one is BCC which stands for Blind Carbon Copy. This one really surprised me. I never used it because I did not know what it meant. But the BCC can be very important when sending an e-mail. For instance, you use the to line for the person you want the message to pertain to, and cc a few people so that they have knowledge of what you sent and to whom. But the BCC you can send it to a supervisor as proof that you sent it and the to, and CC will not know that you did it.
E-mail addresses have two parts the first part is a username then the @ sign and the second part is the domain like Hotmail.com, or gmail.com below is a template of other usernames.
Organization Type
Email
Government
.gov
Education Institutions
.edu
Armed Forces/Military
.mil
Nonprofit organizations
.org
There are free e-mail sites like Hotmail.com, outlook.com, gmail.com and Yahoo.com, which is good because they are free, and you can do a lot with the e-mail sites. The only issue is that some e-mail cannot get through other organization types because of a firewall from their server. So, it is good to have more than one e-mail source so that you can be successful when sending the e-mail. Below is a video that is very helpful with understanding the e-mail process and protocols https://youtu.be/VEYC1VnnEaY?si=_Rp8Mcnz8zwMsJGm.
There are two types of formats I specifically have used plain text, for all the emails I have sent because I did not know about rich text format. What I have learned is the rich text format people that receive the document may not be able to see everything in the e-mail like videos and pictures. The Plain text format is not a formatted message and that’s why it can be opened by any software because there ais no attachments. Then we start talking about protocols. Protocols are basically a set of rules that the e-mail service must follow. Some examples are POP 3 (post office protocol 3) a simple way to access your e-mail IMAP (intended message access protocol), SMTP (simple mail transfer protocol) basically from server to server.
Next, we will discuss the mighty cloud which is a bunch of servers that store your information and have a higher level of security. One good thing about the cloud is that you basically can access it from any computer anywhere. The cloud holds information that you want from your computer to include a computer back up for future reference or for safe keeping. The cloud holds all information that you may use, especially e-mails from whatever Hotmail, or Gmail that you use. There are four most used consumer free cloud storage services Microsoft One Drive, Google Drive, Apple I Cloud, and Drop Box. I personally use Microsoft One Drive a lot and it works for me I pay to get more space.
You can pay for additional space to be used on whatever cloud you use, and the cost is affordable. I use the cloud to back-up my hard drive and to put sensitive information files for safe keeping. I usually use my phone or tablet to get some of the files when I need them. There are two types of models for the cloud, Deployment Model and Service Model.  The following link will go further into detail about cloud computing https://youtu.be/M988_fsOSWo?si=jtKxb8MjB0xwkqQO . The data recovery of your computer that is held on the cloud is very accessible, so you don’t have to worry about losing anything.
Before social media everything we did to find information was by doing research or reading the paper for current events. We would have to mail someone a letter and then wait about 14 to 18 days to get a response, that is if we don’t make a long-distance call to them. But with social media everything has been simple but to some very expensive. When I say expensive, I am talking about the type of computer, software, storage (like the cloud), security for the OS, and any additional expenses due to being hacked or erasing your hard drive. See the examples of social media below.
     Social Media
Examples
Content Communities
YouTube, Flickr, Tumblr, Pinterest, and ImagR
Blogs
WordPress, Blog.com, Weekly, and Blogger
Forums
Quora, Yahoo Answers, StackExchange, and ASKfm
Podcasts
BuzzSprout, Podcastics, Transistor, and Spreaker
Social Networks
Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Twitter
Wikis
Wikispaces, Google Sites, WikiHow, and Wikipedia
You can cross categorize some of the above applications because they do the same thing, except that some may have public access to change data and then there are some that you can’t. With the above apps you can message worldwide as long as you have an internet connection. Some of them you can video conference if you have a camera. There is unlimited usage for these apps as software. These apps tell the computer what it is about to do like send a message or live video and basically to send Data. Now let’s look at some of the social media. Forum, this is a way of bringing up a subject and then other people cand discuss it but cannot edit the topic being looked at. Wikis is an app where you can post a topic or just general information, but other parties can create, modify, or even remove the post. Blogs are an app that can be like a forum except a forum is a back-and-forth discussion and a blog is just a one-way conversation.
The blog is more of an Author led while the forum is open and discussions among the followers of the forum communicate. Social Network is an app that is made for or should I say open to the public worldwide to be able to friend people, and family members. You can e-mail with the sites domain and send instant messaging as well as call over the computer or video over the computer. You can set your homepage of these apps to things that interest you. The following link explains social media in-depth https://youtu.be/ItoTvKPhgFk?si=oLwd9fSl2_E8bFtz
Next, we will discuss QR Codes, NFC, and Snap Tags. We all have used one of these at one time or another. I personally have downloaded a QR Code Reader so that when I go to a restaurant, I can pull up their menu. There are a lot of restaurants that only have QR Codes for menus because it is cost effective. NFC (Near Field communication) which works like a QR Code and was around longer but not too many people knew about them. Your mobile device has this on your phones. NFC is basically a wireless radio communication like RFID (Radio Frequency Communication) and only works in proximity around 4 inches or less. You can Tap your mobile device to an NFC, and it will connect, which is good if you want to pay for something without using cash. It is fast and reliable.
Snap Tags are replacing QR Codes more and more. Snap Tags can scan barcodes and give out menus for the item you snapped, and you can also pay with it. The cool thing is that Snap Tags collect information from you and the experience is different for everyone the following video  https://youtu.be/o85WGmYdXns?si=razmxfR1Jacm40Ye. Next, we are going to discuss my favorite topic which is called The Essential Eight. There are a lot of technologies out there but these eight were picked out of all of them to be the fastest and most effective in growing today. The eight consist of Augmented Reality, Robotics, Virtual Reality, Drones, Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, 3-D Printing, and Internet of Things (IOT). The attached link goes further in detail on these, https://youtu.be/ZAvBJ9JsvwY?si=Pw-DoVmczbEQeqQ3 .
