Okay, here’s the thing that a lot of people don’t seem to understand…
You can read whatever the fuck you want and like whatever the heck you like, etc.
But the point of all those bloggers, sjws, and activist who are shouting about things being Problematic isn’t really to make you stop buying, or stop doing, or stop reading.
It’s meant to make you pay attention.
To make you a slightly more conscientious consumer.
That’s it.
Because at the end of the day, no one can really make you do anything, least of all some random person writing on the internet. You don’t owe them anything, including your outrage.
If you start feeling guilty over something that you like because of something someone on the internet said, that’s on you. Because you suddenly realized that hey, maybe liking a novel that has an inherently sexist narrative says something about your tastes. Or maybe it says nothing at all because a lot us are blind to certain things because of ingrained prejudices, and that takes a long time to learn to recognize and unlearn - and you’ve just made the first step.
However, it means that shouty-person succeeded because they made you pay attention to them long enough to change your mind or make you see something that you hadn’t before. You have learned. Or maybe now you’re just pissed off and annoyed, because clearly they misunderstood and here’s an essay…
The thing is though, you don’t have to start hating that thing that you like. Will it be harder to enjoy it? Yeah probably… or maybe not. But now you’ll start to see why that thing was an issue and yeah, maybe we should avoid doing it.
Media doesn’t exist in the bubble. Words hurt. And problematic narratives can have long harmful impacts. But avoiding them is… frankly, kind of impossible. So like what you like, but think about you are consuming, who you are supporting, and what kind of legacy you are helping move forward.
Or you know… learn to ignore and scroll past. Most people on the internet don’t actually have anything worthwhile to say and you’ll save yourself a lot of time and energy just by scrolling past.
