The Outsiders as Best Friends

Johnny - understands you the most out of everyone. he also gives the best advice, and doesn’t pressure you into anything you don’t want to do. your literal ride or die. he supports your decisions and admires your star qualities. will do anything for his best friend. also super funny when he gets comfortable, and the type of friend to take care of you when you’re sick willingly.

Steve - always has your back. in any tough situation he will stand by you and fight anyone who hurt you. he’s super protective over you, but also gives you your space because he knows you can handle yourself. you two love to stay at the Curtis house, eating the food that Darry cooks and you guys play competitive games of cards and football with the gang.

Two-Bit - the funniest guy ever. he never fails to make you laugh, even when you’re feeling down or upset. you two have so many inside jokes that no one else gets, and you guys just laugh at anything and everything together. Darry and Dally especially get super annoyed by the constant laughter, but they secretly love the happiness you guys radiate. 

Ponyboy - the one you can be yourself with. say whatever you want, listen to music together, read books, just enjoy things that you wouldn’t with other people. also the best friend where you two are always associated with each other, and no one really sees you two without each other. you guys both like some space, but really enjoy each others’ company.

Darry - the best friend that you’ve been friends with forever. you don’t remember a time you weren’t with them. you two are extremely similar, and like to compete with everything. trash talk!! as kids you were at each others’ house everyday after school and on the weekends, and you share most of the same interests. 

Dally - isn’t the best influence, but keeps you out of trouble and truly wants the best for you. you two are inseparable and know pretty much everything about each other. Dally is super loyal as a best friend and trustworthy. he knows he isn’t every parent’s dream for their child to be around, but he tries not to expose you to what he’s been exposed to. 

Sodapop - so much fun to be around!! is up for anything - drag races, movies at the drive-in, going for drives, hanging at home... anything that’s exciting. loves playing cards and rough housing. laughs at almost everything, becomes friends with your other friends, introduces you to their friends, brightens your life overall.

The Gang as Aesthetics

Johnny - long fingers, a sky full of stars, cicadas chirping, warm fireplaces, late nights with your best friend, cold hands, oversized jackets, slow dancing at a school dance, cut knuckles, remembering the little things, bright eyes, 80s music, walking into a heated building after being in the cold for a while

Ponyboy - old books, the parts of libraries no one goes to, sunflowers, poetry that makes you feel things, sad nostalgia, neat handwriting, staying up late studying, staring at your crush, childhood innocence, visiting the museum, watching old movies

Sodapop - (:(, wheat fields, flannel, ancient Greek art, glass bottles of soda at the drive-in, dancing around a bonfire, laughing until your ribs hurt, crying alone in your room, old-fashioned cars from the 60s in classic colors, golden retrievers

Darry - achy backs, chopped firewood, warm milk before bed, drinking wine on a Wednesday night, collapsing into a soft bed after a hard day, smiling when your loved ones are happy, empty football fields, going crazy when your favorite sports team wins

Dally - towering skyscrapers, sub-zero nights, side glances at your crush to see if they’re looking, the smell of cigarettes, the feeling of leather brushing your skin, walking alone at night in the city, partying until the late AM, sharing a moment with a friend

Steve - thunderstorms, lonely gas stations on road trips, naturally curly hair after a shower, rusty old steering wheels, the taste of metal in your mouth, cold chocolate cake, trying to dance like Elvis, throwing crazy house parties that trash the entire house

Two-Bit - sharpened switchblades, class clowns, yolo, loud guffaws coming from inside the bar, singing at the top of your lungs while driving at midnight, late night snacks, trying so hard not to laugh while a teacher is yelling, hitting a door frame with your head

The Gang’s Favorite Colors and What It Reminds Them Of

Johnny - dark blue/black. Although the nights in the lot were cold and sometimes lonely, the night sky always kept him company. He loved looking up at the stars while dreaming of another life and what his future would be like. When he stargazed, he felt like he had a true friend that would listen to his thoughts and really understood him.

Sodapop - yellow. Yellow always reminded Soda of his mom’s hair, and how it shone in the sun. It was also one of the things that Soda and Mrs. Curtis shared, and whenever he saw yellow he never failed to smile to himself, thinking about how although he was more like his dad, his mother was always a caring and strong presence.

Steve - gray. Steve’s father hated the color gray. Therefore, Steve loved the color gray. Besides loving gray in spite of his father, gray also reminded Steve of thunderclouds, which he found calming and beautiful. The sound of thunder, and the idea of being home while it stormed outside comforted Steve.

Two-Bit - red. Two-Bit’s mom and sister had rust-colored hair, and so did he. Although his dad walked out on his family, Two-Bit appreciated how hard his mom worked to support his younger sister and himself. To tell the truth, Two-Bit sometimes felt that he wasn’t good enough for the sacrifices his mother made, being a barmaid and all. He loved that he could share one quality with his remaining family.

Darry - dark purple. Ever since his parents died, Darry was always stressed out about supporting his brothers, working two jobs, paying rent, not going to college, etc. When Darry saw purple, though, especially dark, rich shades, he felt a strange wave of calm over him. He imagined galaxies full of endless possibilities, and that it was never too late for anyone to pursue their dreams.

Ponyboy - gold. Ponyboy loved sunsets and the way they looked, and Nothing Gold Can Stay always stuck with him. Gold reminded him of Soda and his mother, and made him think of love and warmth. Gold also reminded Pony of better times and memories that would never leave. 

Dally - baby blue. Dally knew he was tough and that he had seen too many things that boys his age weren’t supposed to see. However, baby blue reminded Dally of innocence and purity, similar to what Johnny was. Dally always admired people who were innocent (not small children though) and baby blue secretly gave him hope in humanity.

Johnny Studying and Taking a Big Test

- so it’s canon that Johnny is a good, but slow learner

- Johnny actually loves to learn but just hates tests because the time limit messes up his focus and he begins to forget what he studied. also, teachers pressure him and this doesn’t help him either :(

- anyways so in order to study more eFfiCiEnTlY Johnny starts chewing gum, organizing his notes, doing all of these elaborate stunts so he could finally get an A on an important test and make himself and the gang proud. he just wants to bring that big A home and see the smiles light up on the gang’s faces and have them all be happy

- Johnny starts listening to music while studying, and gets in like full study mode - he gets his flashcards, blue highlighter, black pens, and his textbook to help him. 

- Johnny actually starts to get lost in what he’s studying that he totally forgets the time and by then it’s midnight (he’s at the Curtis house) and Darry tells him to go to bed. he studied a ton so he feels pretty prepared, so he starts to go to crash on the Curtis’ couch and falls asleep reading notes

- at school the next day, Johnny chews his gum while taking his test, and he’s on the multiple choice part of the test. he gets really nervous but then remembers how hard he studied and imagines Dally being proud of him, and everything starts flooding back to him

- Johnny is especially nervous for the essay part

- Johnny loved to write, just not timed and about stuff he wasn’t passionate about. and this essay was just plain boring.

- however, like the strong boi he is, Johnny writes a splendid five paragraph essay about the industrial revolution!! he is so happy to turn it in and is all smiles while walking to his teachers’ desk

- Johnny gets his grade back a few days later and... A!! Johnny is ecstatic and as soon as he sees Ponyboy, he immediately shows him. Johnny is literally beaming and Ponyboy is glad Johnny feels happy again (this takes place after the book; Johnny survived!) people look at him like he’s crazy but honestly who cares

- When Dally sees this, he ruffles Johnny’s hair

- “You really did it this time, huh?”

- Darry and Soda give him a big wholesome hug 

- Two-Bit cracks jokes about Johnny’s eyebags, but is nonetheless extremely proud of Johnny

- Steve smiles at Johnny and you could just tell he was honored to witness that moment

- Johnny is happier than he’s been in a while after the events of the book!!

- a motivated and self-confident Johnny is a beautiful Johnny :))
