Nice little trip to Natural Bridges this morning. Lots of little kelp and shore crabs running around. Holding out for that dude with the one claw, though, and hoping he stays safe. The birds were definitely flying around the area. Also, some college students were kind enough to let me check out the amazing Opalescent nudibranchs they had found. Got one to pose on a piece of kelp for a better look.

The family Channichthyidae are more commonly known as icefish, and they are the only known vertebrates that lack hemoglobin in their blood as adults. As a result their blood is white and their skin appears translucent.

I think sea stars are my favorite "models" to shoot. They don't move the whole time you're snapping photos, and they just have a natural pose to them when you see them at the tidepools. I'm sure they are not a fan of being photographed while eating, but they are just so darn fun to see! Also, shout-out to anemones! Especially love the green ones!

Stars, snails, and sea anemones.. oh, my! Couldn't get to the low intertidal zone due to waves (and maybe I slept in a bit), but that didn't cut down the excitement. No crabs scurrying around, but an absolute "Pisaster" if you ask me. Make that two! One stayed hidden, and looked it might have been eating (if you know what it's doing, please let me know). As for the other.. let's just say if it was a snake, it would have bit me XD! Either way, a fun morning out.

(Still) One Shell of a Blog!
Literally my first post in years, and the first under the new name. i didn't abandon this blog, I swear! I maybe forgot about it, but i never had the intention to abandon it. Long story short: a college major change set me on a different path, and to a different state for more two years. Stick around on this blog and maybe more stories about this time will get looped into future posts. That being said, I am back in my amazing home state of California! And even though I pursued a different path, don't for one second think my love for the ocean and its inhabitants has changed.. even for a second!
Now let's really get down business and see why this is still one "shell" of a blog!

Sea Donuts: not as tasty as they sound. If you lick one of these babies on their tentacles when open, sea anemones will inject toxins into your body. Touching is okay as your skin is thicker on your hand. Again, touch. Don’t lick

One shell of a blog!
This blog was born from an idea and a cache of photos on my computer. Pictures are all from Natural Bridges in Santa Cruz as I tend to frequent that place the most. However, future trips may take me to other places in the Monterey Bay Peninsula. Posts will not be as frequent as I would like for now but I hope everyone enjoys. Pictures are taken with my GoPro Hero 3+ or iPhone 5S.
