also am i the only one who thinks the baby m*rty scene that ev*l rick scanned out of c1/3/7’s brain is fully just no longer canon 😭
#i feel like so many people are still waiting on an explanation for that but like#they changed so much about rick from season 1 and it hasn’t ever been acknowledged again#it seems popular/important enough they might bring it back around for a real explanation later but#at the moment it seems completely irrelevant to understanding anything about Rick currently 😭#it was an early indication that he genuinely cared about m*rty which was important at the time#but now there’s so much more to go off of#idk it was a cute mysterious scene but i am fully of the belief that it’s been retconned for a while now

diane probably should have been a redhead
#not because of rick’s type specifically i don’t really care about that aspect#but i feel like it would provide like a meaningful visual connection between her and Summer#plus it would help to explain where she got her red hair from in the first place which like#obviously that’s not Important or anything but it’s just a little bonus#especially since Rick’s mother is blonde so we could infer that’s where Beth got it from anyway#on the other hand i do enjoy that Diane doesn’t fit Rick’s ‘type’ that we know of to a T#he liked that cookie

like my thing is it’s clear that Rick was written as an actively shitty potentially even uninterested parent before even abandoning Beth but like. is this something we’re meant to be taking seriously still or is it akin to Rick talking like he was divorced in season 2 and the “Rick was there for a version of M*rty’s childhood” breadcrumbs where they were just exploring their options initially and now we’re meant to brush those off as Mysterious Rick Things which have been retconned away in favor of the more complete backstory they created for him

i feel like Jerry claiming Beth was raised “like a reptile” back in season 1 is kind of an unopened rabbit hole bc it’s kind of unclear if he’s just referring to Beth having been abandoned (which it doesn’t really sound like he is?) or if he’s talking about Rick actually raising her which is. something
im sure this is something people have maybe spoken about before and I’m just showing up late but it really stuck out to me lately
#compounding with the Tommy episode the show has repeatedly alluded to Rick being pretty absent even when he was around#which is NUTS to me given what seems to be implied about Rick’s feelings about that time period#and what’s shown of Diane and Beth c*1*3*7 moments before their death#it feels weirdly incongruent#and i can’t tell if it’s intentional on any level or just a result of writers disagreeing#as they so often did during that point of the show#it also sticks out to me because it’s not entirely clear that Rick Was actively being a bad father during that time#we can infer that he might have been like the mad(ish) scientist version of a workaholic parent?#but we don’t really get what his mindset about that was in the moment#if he was already showing signs of apathy or if he was just so fixated on portal travel#and potentially wanted to return to a normal family life after?#with the constant inventions being something of his version of a love language maybe?#that beth misinterprets as him waving her off? but that could also be me being overly optimistic#i question this because ricks seem to become more similar to each other as you go back further#and this type of attitude would make sense for Prime and other run of the mill Ricks who left behind their families#but it doesn’t make sense for c 1/3/7#even though he’s actively defensive over this kind of parenting which implies he was the same#i really hope we get some kind of extra context about this because it feels like an entire dimension of rick’s character#that’s left as a big question mark but treated like it’s solved#what kind of father was s*mple rick!!!!#this also feeds into the cracks in his and diane’s marriage#which are sort of kind of alluded to but there’s no real way to surmise the exact extent of them#or where they were really coming from or where they started#idk i’m more obsessed with diane and s*mple rick than i probably should be

idk if i’ve posted about this before on my other blogs but has anyone considered that r!ck prime might be more obsessed with Diane than any other Rick
#granted i am under no illusion that this was ever the canon intent but it’s fun to think about#as an alternative to the typical he’s the only one who didn’t love Diane type of narrative#no other rick recreates her physically#not even C-137#but he does this endlessly and there’s always this incredibly bitter volatile tone about it#just something to chew on#prime who became too attached to an independent diane and disappeared her out of wounded pride my beloved
