âwow â tracy would kill to do all that. well, not â not really kill, but she loves the spotlight. just not so much that it goes to her head, sheâs just very into it,â she said. penny looked at her and shrugged. âwell, yanno. segregation. blacks and whites being separated and all that. at our school, the black kids have their own bathrooms and water fountains â theyâre not even allowed to dance with the white kids at school dances. they have to stay behind a rope. itâs pretty dumb⊠my boyfriend and i get a lot of talk about us. weâve had people tell us weâre committing a sin. weâre the bad kind of popular in baltimore. everyone knows us as âthe black guy and his white girlfriendâ and it drives me more crazy than my mother could ever get,â she said before sighing. âpeople just donât get it. we donât care what our skin looks like. we just love each other. iâd marry him in a heartbeat if he asked me. weâre gonna have some pretty cute babies some day,â she said with a smile, which faded quickly as she remembered seaweed was nowhere around and how worried he must have been that she wasnât in baltimore anymore. âsounds good to me. i check everything before i eat it anyways.â
âi know exactly what you mean,â liv reassured her. âiâm sure if she keeps working at it, one day her dream will come true, too.â she was optimistic but not dumb -- she knew how lucky she was to be doing what she did. maybe it was unlikely that tracy, whoever she was, would have the same chance but it wasnât impossible, either. âi...are you serious? segregation ended...well, a long time ago.â not long enough, really, but it wasnât anything sheâd had to worry about in her life time, of course. she never thought about how lucky she was to be able to date who she wanted to date, compared to people who lived during what penny was describing. she just wasnât sure how the other girl could be telling the truth. âyou know...iâm a white girl, my ex-boyfriend is black, and iâve never heard anyone say anything derogatory about our relationship, so i...i just canât imagine the type of response youâre talking about. but it sounds terrible.â in fact, liv hardly ever thought about the color of holdenâs skin. baltimore was definitely not the worst of it these days, but there wasnât much liv could say without more facts. âif you two do decide to get married and have babies, feel free to come stay with me in los angeles. nobody will look twice at you two.â liv was health conscious, but not because of dietary restrictions. it must be a pain to be so watchful when you had no choice. âand the park has medics -- just in case.â

â  NO,  NO,  MY LOVE  !  â  sheâll exclaim,  practically tearing the horse costume out of the smaller girlâs hands.   â  just because thereâs a dead body out here,  does not mean you have to look  ⊠ like that  !  â  sheâll toss the costume to the side,  booping  the otherâs nose.   â  you just let me help you my darling,  yes  ?  â   |  @inthemccnlight  âĄâd.
for a moment, all she can do is stare blankly. what the hell?? sheâd had the perfect costume! âno,â she says bluntly, reaching to reclaim the horse suit. âsome people might say your priorities arenât in order. but personally, i just want you to get lost.â

âiâm pretty sure my mother would unapologetically use a baseball bat to bash the legs of anyone who tried to touch me -- but i guess i canât really blame you.â truthfully, she doesnât want to lose sight of him, either. hence the matching costumes. theyâre simply...more convenient, thatâs all! âyou didnât have a better idea and we both know it.â

âbroadway,â she said with slightly widened eyes. âthatâs like⊠the tippy toppy of acting. are you an actress? that was a stupid question, you wouldnât be doing a show if you werenât one,â she said, immediately regretting the stupidity of her question. âi just stopped her cause i had a hypoglycemia attack and i knew where thereâs fun, thereâs food and sugar. now my sugarâs back up but so is my blood pressure, this place sucks.â pennyâs hypoglycemia was a serious problem â especially for her because her sugar was already so low to begin with, and when it dropped, it dropped fast. âitâs fantastic â itâs my favorite place in the world. well⊠the record shop and the turnblads house are my favorite places, but baltimore in general. itâs great. aside from the segregation, that part really sucks⊠makes my heart hurt.â segregation upset her long before she met seaweed. but it sure did bother her a lot more now than ever. she thought for a few seconds, thinking of the pros and cons. of course⊠there werenât many cons. except that her sweet tooth would kick in. but the biggest pro was that sheâd have something on hand in case her sugar dropped. and the few times she went trick-or-treating as a child, she really had enjoyed it. âokay⊠but, anything that contains any kind of nut has to be sealed in some sort of wrapper. iâll die.â
many didnât feel that way, so she was glad to hear someone else agree with her that landing a role on broadway was the dream -- pun on her former bandâs name intended. âiâm am an actress, and a singer, and a dancer when required.â liv would never call herself a bad dancer, but certainly it wasnât her strength. âon the bright side, youâll never have low blood sugar again.â it was hard to find the silver linings, but darn if she wouldnât try. at the word segregation, liv tensed up and gave the girl a confused smile. âwhat do you mean??â of course the word had a very specific connotation in the united states, but maybe she meant it in some new way liv hadnât heard of yet. âiâll be on nut patrol. if iâm handed, say, a kit kat bar, iâll give it right to you in case the next candy bar is a snickers, or something.â

âdid you run away too?â she asked before shaking her head, remembering that the amber lookalike just told her running away wasnât a good idea. ânever mind, donât answer that. i forget things easily.â penny nodded, sighing quietly but deeply at the thought of her home. baltimore, that is. not her literal house. âi miss it⊠my friends⊠my boyfriend⊠i should have just gone to tracy or seaweed⊠heck, i wouldâve even gone to amber, she hates my mother more than i do. everyone does.â the short brunette gave live a small half smile. âthis isnât vintage in baltimore. itâs not exactly⊠fashionable. but not vintage for sure. we all wear stuff like this.â her head shook and she gave a soft hum. âhuh-uh. my mother doesnât let me. she thinks itâs celebrating the devil. besides, iâm getting too old for it. i just turned sixteen, iâm ancient compared to some of the kids around.â
âdonât worry about it,â she assured penny with a smile. âi was actually doing a show on broadway and i thought iâd visit something fun before i went back home. the yelp reviews for this place are not accurate.â considering there was no way to even contact the outside world from inside the park, she assumed the good reviews were left by the park owner using various accounts, or something similar. âhm...well, iâll have to take your word for it! iâve never actually been to baltimore.â there were lots of places she had never been to and now she was seriously starting to worry she would never get the chance. she laughed, "iâm nineteen, so i think youâre...a perfectly appropriate age for trick-or-treating. come on, we can go to the rest of the booths in this part of the park together.â liv tried to sound encouraging, like it would be fun, but really she just wanted to help penny comply without freaking her out. if she had missed the announcement, then she was lucky. âfree candy has no age limit.â

âyou look exactly like a friend of mine⊠well, sheâs not really a friend, sheâs more like the mean girl that torments my best friend but is nice to me because she pities me,â she rambled. âpenny lou pingleton.â sheâd heard that lecture before. she was eight years old and she ran away from home to the turnblad house. she was also ten and thirteen and fifteen. miss edna told her every single time she should never run away because it was dangerous â but penny knew it was different this time. it was more serious this time. she wasnât just downtown crying in her best friendâs motherâs arms in baltimore this time. she didnât know exactly where she was. and that was the dangerous part. aside from a killer being on the loose. âi just need to get back to baltimore. if i never see my mother again, iâll be fine â but i â i need seaweed and tracy and⊠and miss edna, god i miss miss ednaâs hugs,â she said almost in a whisper. she gave the girl a confused expression, tilting her head to the side. âwhat are you talking about costume? iâm not in a costume, these are my clothes,â she said, unsure of whether she should be offended or not.
her eyebrows furrowed at the thought of someone else besides maddie having her face, and that this person could be mean. liv led a crusade against bullying, for goodness sake! âi can assure you i am nothing like your...non-friend. and i donât pity you, but i do sympathize. i wish i could go home, too, penny.â liv threw her name out, just to show that she had been paying attention. âbaltimore? at least youâre not too far from home.â whether it was stevenâs point or los angeles, liv felt as if the miles stretching from her home to syracuse were endless. âoh! oh, of course, um. i, too, am a fan of a more vintage style of clothing.â half her wardrobe came from modcloth, after all. âbut, in a pinch, thatâll do for a costume. have you gone trick or treating yet?â she asked nervously but tried to hide it. if she couldnât pretend -- no, act -- like she wasnât freaking out, than her entire professional life was a lie.

his costume is cheesy, peter is hyper aware of that but it also makes sense. if he wore his actual supersuit, he wouldnât be able to talk to people without being suspicious but if he wore a normal costume he wouldnât be able to investigate what had happened ( he doesnât even want to think about it ). thatâs how he had settled on his homemade spiderman suit, he could just claim to be a fan. as he retreats from one of the creepy vendors ( who wouldnât even talk to him or answer his questions ) he falls into step next to a person. âare you okay?â the answer is probably obvious but he has to ask.
usually, star would love the opportunity to dress up in a costume. however, she still isnât sure what exactly halloween is, and she knows there are more pressing matters to focus on. although she has the magic to make whatever she wants, her costume is simply a blue unicorn horn attached to her forehead with a blue dress that differs from what she usually wears. she turned her hair pink but left her skin the same. pony head wouldnât mind the costume -- hopefully. regardless, it was the first thing she could think of. âme?? iâm fine. i mean...iâm alive and iâm not afraid of that changing any time soon, so.â star shrugs, then glances at the stranger. âwhat are you supposed to be?â

her eyes widened, looking at the girl in front of her. she knew that face. that face was of one amber von tussle. but⊠she knew amber well enough to know she wouldnât dress as something so simple and basic â the von tussles were over the top no matter what day it was. penny was convinced they even slept in ballgowns instead of nightgowns. âamberâŠ?â she asked, uncertainty in her voice as she highly doubted this was the girl the grew up with. âiâm â no, iâm not lost, i just â i need to go home, i thought going somewhere that wasnât home would get me away from issues and⊠and clearly, this place wasnât the right place,â she said as she adjusted her glasses.
âhm?â liv quickly ran down all the roles she had played and couldnât recall ever playing a character with that name. âiâm liv. liv rooney. and you are?â she asked politely. it seemed trivial to exchange pleasantries with someone under the circumstances, but this bespectacled person seemed even more lost than liv was, so it was her duty to help. ârunning away never helps -- i hope you remember that what we all get out of here. well, if. iâm sorry, but...i donât think anyone can leave.â she knew this was hard to hear, so she quickly changed the subject. âwhatâs your costume? like, sock hop girl, or something?â

âi donât like this place muchâŠâ penny said out loud to herself as she nervously ran her hands through one of her pigtails. âi need to go home⊠tracyâs probably looking for me, seaweedâs probably worried sick, and⊠miss edna, god i bet if she found out i ran away sheâd be in the middle of a heart attack. or stress eatingâŠâ she muttered. as her brown eyes looked around, her tiny body simultaneously ran into somebody and it snapped her attention to the person in front of her, stepping back and covering her mouth. âoh my gosh, iâm so sorry! are you okay?â
it was apt that liv would run into someone while dressed as red riding hood. normally she wasnât one for outfit repeating, but under the circumstances, she didnât have the frame of mind to think of something more creative. it was bad enough being away from her family, again, but now this place wasnât just off-putting, it was dangerous. liv couldnât help screaming as her body collided with another, positive it was the murderer. she put a hand to her chest, bending over slightly to catch her breath. âdefine okay.â she stood up, forcing a smile to put the other small girl at ease. âdonât worry, youâre not the reason iâm scared. are you lost?â

â i just turned TWENTY ONEâ i think i know enough , â she says with a laugh. was she really twenty one? she stopped counting the years that passed after the FOURTH sacrifice , everything seemed to blur together at that point , so it would just be a WASTE of time. â itâs on me , but you can choose , if you want. â
âoh, really? congratulations. i feel as though i should be the one buying you a drink, but since you insist...â elektra looked in the direction of the closest waiter and he came over without her so much as motioning. âvodka martini -- or mezcal, if you have it.â which, they wouldnât. this was an amusement park, after all. âtwo, thank you.â when he left, she looked back at her new acquaintance. âyou have to start them young. isnât that what people say?â she smiled charitably, like ordering a drink for her was a great kindness.

âThat or worrying that your weapon will hurt someone.â Hana had to remember who Gogo was but when she saw the costume and the toy weapon, she had to say to make sure. She didnât want to find out if she was as skilled as the character. Glancing down at her pin-up girl cruiser outfit, she frowned to herself. âOh. come on. Isnât it obvious?â She tried to put on her cutest voice, winking at her as she acted as her character. âHey Daddyâo!â
Lara Jean looked down at the fake chain flail in her hands, nervously shaking it around. âItâs just plastic.â Not that someone who did know what they were doing couldnât still do some damage -- she just wasnât that someone. She nodded and forced a smile so she wouldnât look too clueless. A lot of costumes were hard to get unless you happened to know the subject matter, but she didnât want to make the other girl feel bad. âOh, um, right! Itâs just...I think the headphones are a little confusing.â

â right, okay i can see youâre not liking this game as much as iâm BUT !! â there it was, that mischievous grin that could only get him in, or mean trouble.  although these days, ed could not remember the other side of him, the riddler, he still existed, he still lived within him, trying to revive itself by coming back through his consistent riddles.  â i promise to let you get out of this store, with a free gift if you answer my next riddle right â- ready? â
usagi really didnât like word games or puzzles or anything that reminded her of school. the idea of a free gift was mildly interesting, but she was more than willing to pay for the trinket sheâd grabbed and get the heck out of there. something about this man was...off-putting, and not just because he wouldnât let her leave. âlook here, you, iâm already trapped in this terrifying park, without any of my friends!! i donât appreciate your games. so, to answer your question, no. i can tell you already that iâm not going to know the answer.â

â  iâm glad you like them. i wasnât sure if they were going to be any good because this is only the second time iâm making them , â angel admits as she puts the lid back on the container of cookies. until she made her way to the park , it had been years since she baked anything at all. â  i just thought that i would give them a try since pumpkins are so popular right now - there was a whole bunch of them in the hotel kitchen.  â
she takes another bite and nods her head. âi canât tell, if that makes you feel better. iâd think you make them all the time.â rory liked to eat (understatement) but she didnât like to bake, nor did she particularly have any skill. still, she thought she was qualified enough to know a good cookie when she tasted it. â...really? are we, um, supposed to be in there?â
