THE BRADY BUNCH

Ann B. Davis was an American actress who is best known for playing the housekeeper, Alice Nelson on family television series The Brady Bunch (1969-1974). She also appeared on The Bob Cummings Sow (1955-1959), The Brady Bunch Movie (1995), and The Love Boat (1980).

            Davis was born in Schenectady, New York, US and had an identical twin, Harriet. When she was aged three, her family moved to Pennsylvania. She initially wanted to have a medical career, but changed her mind and studied drama and speech.

            In 1976, Davis got involved in a religious community (cult?) in Denver, Colorado. The group was led by Evangelical bishop William C. Frey. Davis sold her home in Los Angeles to join the group and later moved to western Pennsylvania with the group and then to Texas.

            Davis died in 2014, aged 88, in a hospital in San Antonio, Texas. Earlier that day she had a fall in her bathroom and had subdural hematoma. She was said to have been in good health at the time and her death came as a shock to those close to her.

Erin Patterson is an Australian woman from Korumburra, South Gippsland, who allegedly attempted to kill her ex-husband Simon, his parents Gail and Don, his aunt Heather and pastor Ian. Erin and Simon’s two children were also in attendance, but she gave them a different meal. Simon was supposed to be at the lunch but pulled out at the last minute which saved his life. Erin cooked her guest's wild death cap mushrooms inside a Beef Wellington. Gail, Don, and Heather all died after falling ill the day after lunch. Ian was the only survivor after having a liver transplant.

Patterson had dumped her food dehydrator at the rubbish tip in Koonwarra the day after she served her four victims lunch. Erin and Simon had broken up years before but remained in contact for the children's sake. Erin had allegedly attempted to kill Simon previously from nightshade plants which can be fatal and can contain poisonous alkaloids. In May 2022 he ended up in an induced come for 16 days, it was alleged that he suspected he had been poisoned.

Erin who was arrested and is now in a protection unit has proclaimed her innocence, but the public became suspect after she was filmed crying without any tears in her eyes.

GARDEN BRIDGE Joanna Lumley

Lumley proposed for a garden bridge across River Thames in London during the 1990s as a memorial to Princess Diana. She presented detailed plans but her bid and campaign was unsuccessful. Many loved the idea of the bridge and Lumley was upset that it didn’t go ahead as she hoped.

(1973), A Ghost in Monte Carlo (1990), Cluedo (1993), Roseanne (1996), Agatha Christie’s Marple (2004 & 2011), Joanna Lumley’s Nile (2010), JL Greek Odyssey (2011), JL Great Cities of the World (2022).

            Lumley was born in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, British India, her grandfather Colonel Leslie Weir was an army officer in Kashmir and was a close friend of the 13th Dalai Lama. Her parents had Scottish and English ancestry, her father was born in Lahore (Pakistan), the family returned home to England on the HMT Empire Windrush.

            Lumley is involved in many charities and causes (too many to write here). She supports the Gurkhas, exiled Tibetan people and Khonds indigenous people of India. She has also called for the Great Barrier Reef, QLD, Australia to be placed on the list of world heritage sites which is currently in danger.

Lumley has been married twice and has one child. She has been a vegetarian for 40 years. She attended the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla in 2023.

MARGARET OF BURGUNDY, QUEEN OF FRANCE

Les Rois Maudits (The Accursed Kings)

            Margaret of Burgundy was the Queen of France and Navarre, and was the first wife of King Louis X and I. She was a princess of the House of Burgundy, the oldest daughter of Robert II Duke of Burgundy an Anges of France (who was the youngest daughter of Louis IX of France). In 1305, Margaret married her cousin Louis I and had their daughter Joan.

            In 1314, the Tour de Nesle affair was revealed, it was a well-known scandal for the French royal family. The daughters-in-law of King Philip IV, Margaret, Blanche, and Joan were all accused of adultery. The three women were said to have conducted their affairs with Norman knights in a tower in Paris.

            It was Isabella of France (wife of King Edward II of England) who became a witness against those involved in the affair. Isabella had given her sisters-in-law a purse, the Norman knights were found in possession of them after the three ladies had given it to them as a gift The affair was exposed and the knights were tortured and then executed.

            Margaret, Blanche, and Joan were found guilty and imprisoned. Margaret spent the last two years of her life in prison. The women were imprisoned in poor conditions and mistreated, which resulted Margaret catching a virus and passing away. She died aged 24 or 25. Joan’s paternity became in doubt after the affair.  

            Margaret of Burgundy is one of the characters in Les Rois Maudits (The Accursed Kings) by Maurice Druon and was portrayed in the miniseries 1972 and 2005.

She was working as a receptionist when she told her co-workers that she had been diagnosed with cancer. She then told friends, family members and the public that she had cancer and donly had months to live.

Kirilow shaved her head and eyebrows. She even starved herself to convince people of her illness. She raised more than $21,000 in funds for cancer sufferers. She set up her own charity called ‘Change for the Cure’ on Facebook. She appeared at benefit concerts and visited children in hospitals. She accepted a vacation at Disneyworld from a charity for those who are at risk of dying. Skateboard personality, Rob Dyer, organised the trip for her. There was a fundraiser for her at the bar, Club 54 which collected thousands of dollars for her in 2009.

Kirilow told her donors that both her parents were dead and sometimes she would tell people that her parents were both drug addicts who had disowned her (these stories weren’t true).

She was arrested in 2010 for fraud. When she was outed she said, ‘I know what I did was wrong but I was trying to get noticed.’ Her father stated that he became more suspicious of his daughter’s cancer claims, especially when she wouldn’t supply details or evidence of her treatment.

Kirilow pled guilty and was charged with several counts of fraud. She also pled guilty to defrauding Donna Michalowski, a woman who raised thousands of dollars for her. Those close to Kirilow were hurt and angry by her deception and refused to post bail for her, she also received death threats. Her dad was so upset that he refused to pay her bail because she lied to him and others too many times. In 2011, bail was paid and she was given temporary conditional release and was later sentenced to 10 months house arrest and afterwards community service.

She breached her bail conditions numerous times.

THE BONNIE PARKER STORY (1958)

            The Bonnie Parker Story is a true-crime film directed by William Witney and starring Dorothy Provine as Bonnie Parker. The film is based on the life of Bonnie Parker, however, the film is only partially true. Even though Bonnie Parker was her real name, the film makers changed the name of Clyde Barrow to Guy Darrow (played by Jack Hogan). Quentin Tarantino considered William Witney to be a ‘lost master’, and said about the film, ‘I was blown away. It was like, whoa, who made this? I have to see everything he ever did.’

            Bonnie Parker is one half of Bonnie and Clyde, who travelled around America with their gang during the Great Depression. They were known for bank robberies as well as murders (they allegedly had murdered at least nine police officers and four members of the public). They became well known criminals during 1931-1934 and gained much media attention. They were ambused by police and shot to death in Bienville Parish, Louisiana in 1934.

CATCH ME IF YOU CAN (2002)

            Frank Abagnale is best known for being an American con artist and criminal. Leonardo DiCaprio played him in a Steven Spielberg film.

            In his youth, Abagnale began working as a security consultant and became a forger and imposter. He claimed that he pretended to be an airline pilot, physician, a prisons agent, and lawyer.

            He was arrested in France in 1969 and spent less than five years in prison before he was allegedly employed by the federal government. He stated that he then worked as a consultant and lecturer for the FBI academy and field offices.

            Abagnale is a controversial figure, as many of his claims have been disputed. Whilst it is true he was a small time con artist as he did forge checks, pretended to be a pilot and escaped prison there were claims the rest may have not been true at all. He wore a pilot uniform to pose as a pilot, he did so to cash in bad cheques. He stated that he worked as a doctor and a baby nearly died in his care because he didn’t know what a ‘blue baby’ meant. He also posed as a doctor so he could do physical exams on female students.

He did start up a company to identify bad cheques, however, it was said that he had limited dealings with the FBI and has never worked for them. There was also no Tom Hanks character who was pursuing him. Abagnale claimed to he worked as a Sociology teaching assistant at University for a semester under the name of Frank Adams, however this has been disputed.

            Before his book was released, his antics were investigated and there was no evidence of the description under the names that he calimed he used. Abagnale said that his co-writer exaggerated his biography. Writer Alan Logan wrote a book The Greatest Hoax on Earth: Catching Truth, While We Can, strongly questions Abagnale’s tales.

            Catch Me If You Can may not be a ‘true story’ after all.

Did Abagnale con Spielberg and the public? Regardless, he is a con artist either way.
