Day 3 on the Trans-Mongolian Trip. Welcome to Siberia.⠀ .⠀ I wake up this time to the auriferous shores of forested Lake Baikal, whose embroidered shrouds of mist shelter calm icy diaphanous waters. In Irkutsk, we let a friend disembark, ready to explore the chill of Siberia. It already feels like the other end of the world from Beijing, where we have left a world of viral citization and the ultimate stacking of human life in topless towers. Here, the cold pricks the skin and numb the toes as soon as we leave the heated comfort of our car. Day 2 on the Trans-Mongolian Trip. Crossing towards Ulan-Ude - Russia.⠀ .⠀ Day 2 is disappearing below the rails. ⠀ We are crossing the border between Northern Mongolia and Russia, entering the mystical lands of Siberia. Our last station before the border is Sükhbaatar (ᠰᠤᠻᠪᠠᠠᠲᠠᠷ), where controls happen. The first stop in Russia will be in the small town of Naushki (На́ушки). Our beautiful coal-cracker has to go through a bogie exchange before sliding onto Russian Rails, the noise of the operation bouncing thick against iron walls. Then onwards, northwards, forwards, westwards, we restart chasing the sun in its course. The temperatures have dropped massively since our departure from Beijing, and my lungs seem to crystallise at each breath. Day 2 on the Trans-Mongolian Trip. Waking up in the Gobi Desert.⠀ .⠀ The low rumbling of the train screeches and thumps on the rail, and it’s half-asleep, tangled in my sand-coloured blankets, that I cross the border into Mongolia onboard K3, the Trans-Mongolian train linking Beijing to Moscow.⠀ When I wake up, my lips and face have parched with dryness, nails blackened into brittle charcoals. Outside, a landscape of golden grasslands stretches endless, an occasional dusty track races past herds of horses, yurts lighting a speck of gray on rustled sand. ⠀ A lone worker in bright orange waves to our galloping steam; away in the blue, the shape of an eagle cuts the gauze of cirrus clouds. A trio of camels appear through the blinds to disappear in a bolt, leaving cyan, sand and solitude.⠀ In front of me, a group of Mongolian women start to hum, their yodeling shaping the air into rippling tides as we pass through grassier hills.
