xxiii. i’m not fuelling your ego even more (wc 0.7k)

a sudden shift to your side jolts you awake from where you’d been dozing curled up in the huge armchair in your living room. the culprit, yangyang, sniffles in his sleep as he settles back on his left side and a shiver goes through you as you lose the body heat he’d been providing, his back now to you. you sit up carefully as not to wake him, drawing your knees up to your chest and wrapping your arms around them, squinting as your eyes adjust to the darkness. the ending credits to shrek forever after are rolling on the tv, but you can’t remember at what point you fell asleep. in fact, you don’t even recall finishing the third movie.

the room is a lot less crowded than it had been a few hours ago when the movie night was in full swing. over half of the twenty or so people that’d managed to cram into your apartment are nowhere to be found, and everyone who’s still here seems to be fast asleep. donghyuck and renjun are on one end of the sofa, ryujin and yuna settled in on the other, and san and wooyoung are tangled up together in a mess of limbs on the floor below them. you assume yeri had gone back to her own room at some point, and being in your own bed sounds like the best idea in the world right now after being twisted uncomfortably into half an armchair for god knows how long. you snap a quick photo of your sleeping friends as you go, internally cooing at how cute they are, but pause only a couple steps into your journey at the sound of a raspy murmur.

“y’know it’s creepy to take pictures of people when they’re sleeping.” donghyuck’s ever present little smirk appears as he blinks up at you, though whatever sass he’s trying to convey gets overshadowed as soon as he rubs at his eyes and runs a hand through his disheveled bedhead. you’ve never seen him so freshly awoken, only having gotten the odd selfie when he’d been about to sleep. it’s doing things to you, a sudden roaring of butterflies in your stomach and warmth in your chest leaving you unable to retort like you usually would. you open and close your mouth a couple times, staring down at the fuzzy lion slippers that yuta had given you for christmas last year and trying to will yourself to come up with something witty to say.

“just needed proof that ryu can be in the same room as you without attempting murder, even if she is unconscious.” you overshare instead, and watch as his face falls a little. he swings his legs down to plant his feet on the floor and sit up so he’s facing you fully now, looking up at you with a little frown etched into his brow. you have to consciously stop yourself stepping forward and smoothing it out.

“she really doesn’t like me, huh?” he mumbles, biting his lip.

“well she doesn’t really know you, and her first impression of you other than on twitter wasn’t great.” you whisper. “but i’m hoping that if you guys hang out enough she’ll see why i’ve bothered keeping you around.”

“oh really?” the smirk is back, and it’s honestly unfair how attractive he is like this, dim light from the tv highlighting his features, amusement dancing in his eyes. “and why’s that?”

“you’re just fishing now, loser.” you roll your eyes. “i’m not fuelling your ego even more.” whatever he was about to say in response gets interrupted as your stomach grumbles. it’s loud in the otherwise silent room, shrek’s ending credits long finished at this point as the main menu loops onscreen. you glance over at the empty pizza boxes haphazardly stacked in the corner of the room, empty snack packets next to them, regretting your super late lunch that resulted in little to no appetite by the time your friends were devouring the food during the first movie.

“i’m pretty sure the mcdonald’s by campus is twenty-four hours.” donghyuck offers. “i could go for some nuggets.” you mull the idea over in your head, debating on the twenty minute walk, but another smaller protest from your stomach makes the decision for you.

“let me grab some shoes.”
