For those who have never read the manga here is THAT scene from âOnigumoâs Heart Still Beats Within Narakuâ uncensored and unaltered
This is largely an inukik scene while also being a crucial moment in the inukag relationship timeline. To acknowledge these facts i will be tagging both pairingsâan extremely risky choice. Please do be respectful in your comments, tags, etc.Â
Also the most frustrating episodes, honestly. The anime really did Kikyo dirty in a lot of ways, but to also do Inuyasha dirty? In a way that is so out of character even for his anime-self? Frustrating to say the least.Â
If you wish to read the full chapters instead of my humble post just pop over to your fave manga site and read chapters 172-173.
For starters, the âFateful Night in Togenkyoâ two part special actually takes place before the events of Kagome and Inuyashaâs second major fight in the series. In fact, Togenkyo takes place just before Sango joins the group. Thatâs why they had her leave to fix Hiraikotsu in the animeâconsequently giving us the first filler episode of the anime. This post is not about the Togenkyo arc, but I feel like itâs important distinction that the events of Togenkyo took place before this fight and before Sangoâs joining. Itâs actually the first time Miroku sees Inuyasha in his human form as well.
But enough about Togenkyoâonto the angst.
First we have the events of the Juromaru and Kageromaru vs. Inuyasha and gang fight, which lead to Kagome thanking Koga in front of Inuyasha, which causes Inuyasha to become jealous and shoot his mouth off, earning Kagomeâs angry reaction of âIâm going home!â That part is pretty much exactly the same as what occurs in the anime so I wonât include any pics from the manga.
Just like in the anime, Inuyasha goes to the well to sulk and regret and wait for Kagome when Kikyo shows up, the giant soul collector which Naraku sent to kill her hot on her heels.Â
Inuyasha then kills the monster and goes to comfort her.
At which point Kikyo, weakened from losing most of her dead souls, calls to him with a peaceful expression on her faceâimplying she is reassured by his presence. Â
Granted she does that in the anime but her expression isnât quite the same. Her eyes are open and she honestly looks more exhausted than peaceful.
Inuyasha then questions how she came to arrive at her home village. This was her response in the anime:
In the anime Inuyasha assumes she came running here looking for him to save her and she immediately shoots him down in a way that makes it clear she does not feel need or want of his help and his saving her is just how things turned out.
However, in the manga her response goes like this:
Despite her momentary weakness, she forces her eyes open so she can see InuyashaâŚ
âŚBefore quietly recounting how important her home village is to her, and why.
She then asks Inuyasha to take her to Tree of Ages, where she sealed him into his long slumber fifty years ago. Whereas in the anime thatâs just where he happens to place her, in the manga she deliberately asks him to carry her thereâanother important distinction.Â
By asking him to carry her somewhere she shows she feels safe being carried by him, which would mean she trusts and cares for him deeply.Â
Not to mention this is the first time theyâve seen each other since he went to ask her about her giving Naraku the shikon jewel. Which was another Inuyasha and Kikyo scene the anime fucked up. In the anime, Kikyo sits up in a tree while the injured Inuyasha just lies there on the ground.
Meanwhile in the manga this occurred:
âŚThat âyour life is mineâ line kinda rubs me the wrong wayâbut donât let the animators (who apparently hate Kikyo about as much as half the fandom does) fool you. Once Kikyo learned Inuyasha was just as much a victim of Narakuâs plot as she was, her feelings and affection for him made themselves known more than a few times.Â
Which is a good thing for Kikyoâs character.Â
Her spitefulness and jealousy of Kagome was one thing.
Her cruelty towards Inuyasha, and her apparent lack of caring for his share of suffering, was really what made me dislike her back when I had only seen the anime.Â
But anyhooâafter Inuyasha carries her to the Tree of Ages Kikyo begins recounting their shared past. While Inuyasha continues to hold her, as itâs made clear their feelings of affection and love are sharedâconsensual and mutual.
The anime, however, has them positioned with Kikyo leaning against the tree and Inuyasha standing close by. Heâs also the one to begin recounting the events of the past and Kikyo looks like she really couldnât care less.Â
In the manga, Kikyo breaks the harsh news that they both sufferedâher even dyingâdue to Onigumoâs jealousy of their relationship with gentle words and comforting looks.Â
Whereas in the anime she basically throws it in his faceâabout as gentle as shoving another arrow threw his heartâeven saying Inuyasha is the same as Naraku.
Her eyes seem to laugh at him. Her words are cold. Her attitude is callous. I really donât see why they had to change her characterâand this sceneâTHAT much.Â
However it gets worse.
THIS
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY UNFORGIVABLE
In the anime Inuyasha basically forces himself onto Kikyo. Not to such a severe degree, but regardless HE WOULD NEVER FUCKING DO THAT!!!
I mean this is the guy who got pissed at Koga for talking about Kagome as if she were a prize to be claimed.
This is the guy who looked like he didnât know what the heck to do when Kagome snuggled up to him in episode 22Â
This is the guy who is so surprised by any sort of physical affection he freezes from a mere hug.
As if this guy would stoop to forcing himself on a lady like that.Â
Frowns in disapproval at the anime team.Â
How fucking dare you paint him that way?!
Whereas in the manga when Inuyasha correctly deduces Kikyo plans to face Naraku on her own, she tries to reassure him by saying her spiritual powers are the best way to combat his evil heart.
Understanding that her life is once again in danger due to Narakuâs plot, Inuyasha takes the âyour life is mineâ line, which Kikyo previously used to make clear she wouldnât allow Naraku to kill him, and turns it on its headâclarifying he wonât allow Naraku to kill her either.
And they hold each other, like lovers do. Both looking very afraid for the other.Â
I really, really donât get why they decided to change the mood of this sceneâfrom the body language, to the dialogue, to even important little details being removed entirelyâfrom what it was in the manga to what it became in the anime. Perhaps they wanted to make the endgame ship look better and Kikyo look worse? Thatâs purely speculation of courseâdonât take my minor rants seriously.Â
But do allow me one small rant.
I, as someone who has adored InuKag as a ship for over a decade now, hate this.Â
I loathe this whole scene in the anime. I hate how they portrayed Inuyasha. I hate how they made Kikyo seem cold and unfeeling and hateful towards him. It also makes more sense for Kagome to feel torn between staying with Inuyasha and returning to her modern era permanently make more sense if what caused her to feel torn in the first place is Inuyasha and Kikyo being in mutual love. The whole situation in the animeâKagome walking in on Inuyasha forcing Kikyo into an embrace, Kikyo clearly not wanting it, and pulling a fucking knife on the guy of all thingsâbeing the cause of her self-conflict over deciding whether or not she wants to keep travelling between the two eras was just utter ridiculousness.
I mean⌠It kinda made sense.Â
Inuyasha chose Kikyo. Even if she didnât want him back, whether she was dead or alive or whateverâhis heart was hers. He chose her and there was nothing Kagome could do or say about it. The choice was his. That would give her pause about whether or not she wanted to keep travelling with him or not.
Still, the manga scene makes more sense, and is better portrayal for all characters involvedânot just Kikyo, but Inuyasha and Kagome as well.
Back to the subject of the manga, Inuyasha and Kikyo continue to debate over who will face Naraku. Inuyasha wants to do so in order to protect Kikyo, and Kikyo believes she is the only one capable of destroying him.
By which point Kagome has found them and is watching.
As for Kagome, her actions were more or less the same in both anime and manga. With one crucial detail being less obvious.
Sheâs referring of course to Inuyashaâs habit of always looking away from her after he has seen Kikyo. A habit which meant he perhaps felt shame and guilt over harboring romantic feelings of love for both women.Â
Him looking at herâcoupled together with Kikyoâs final comment of ânot allowing another man to touch herââreally drives home the fact that he has made his choice.Â
