DEKALOG (1988-89), dir. Krzysztof Kieślowski.
10 commandments. 10 episodes. 10 hours. Originally made for Polish television, Dekalog is an anthology series of 10 films having the Ten Commandments as thematic source material. It focuses on the residents of a housing complex, whose lives become subtly intertwined as they face emotional dilemmas concerning life, death, love, hate, truth, and the passage of time. Dekalog argues that, in today’s world, whether it’s late-1980s or present-day, the moral absolutes dictated by the Ten Commandments are unachievable. All we can do is choose what we believe is the right thing and hope for the best. This series is regaded as Kieślowski' masterwork and was praised by renowned film critics including Roger Ebert or Robert Fulford, as well as important figures from the film industry, such as Stanley Kubrick.
