The first event took care of the gear.

Event number two was all about the guns: two containers of AK-47-type rifles not destined for South Africa went missing during the chaos that ensued at the Durban harbour when Transnet suffered a cyberattack, sources say.

Number three: The bullets. More specifically, the million-plus rounds of ammunition stolen during the July 2021 riots after it was moved, under suspicious circumstances, to a depot near the Durban harbour with scant security measures in place.

Number four: The comms. During the 2021 looting, several radio stations were stripped bare of their equipment.

And, finally, number five: The cash. Around the time of the riots, R120-million in cash was stolen from more than 1,200 ATMs in just one week.

That, says the source in the security sector, is because strike season, the rising petrol price, Eskom outages, power struggles in the ANC, and former president Jacob Zuma’s upcoming trial in August are all converging to form a political pressure cooker:

“We’re on a knife’s edge. We’re a country on the verge of tearing itself apart.”

All of this, our sources say, points to one thing: An organised insurrection driven by guerilla tactics. “It’ll only take the slightest spark now,” says the intelligence specialist.

New game plan proposed to end load shedding, as top researchers say Stage 8 looms

There is also a high risk that many of the gas projects in the RMI4P – which include the Karpowership projects – will be delayed or fail due to their excessive pricing, complexity and ongoing litigation.

Local content conditions that projects use a required amount of locally manufactured parts have added increased costs, risks and delays. Locally constructed parts for solar panels, when available, cost between 18% and 30% more, says Meridian. This requirement should be lifted immediately for at least the next two years and pricing for both procurement rounds should be revisited urgently.

There is an additional aspect to the way that the RMI4P tender was designed, which the researchers say will lead to wasted energy that should rather be made available to the grid. Because of tender specifications, the RMI4P projects had to substantially overbuild capacity to meet dispatch requirements. The consequence will be that these projects will sit with battery-stored energy that most of the time they will not dispatch. The report proposes the Eskom system operator be given the ability to use the battery storage as needed.

JUST IN | Nelson Mandela Bay hits Day Zero as dam levels drop too low for water extraction

Day Zero has arrived in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality after levels in the Impofu Dam, near Humansdorp in the Eastern Cape, dropped too low to allow for water extraction.

On Monday, the municipality shared a document with News24 that indicated that the dam had hit Day Zero and would no longer be able to supply residents with water.
