i hate it when i cant even write a poem about something because its too obvious. like in the airbnb i was at i guess it used to be a kids room cause you could see the imprint of one little glow in the dark star that had been missed and painted over in landlord white. like that's a poem already what's the point

i was a camp counselor a few summers back and there was one kid who was the “problem child”, i think he was going into second or third grade at the time. he got sent to the main office almost every day and was always causing trouble. one day he got out in a game (softball or dodgeball or something like that) and wouldnt stop crying. all the adults were fed up with him and he ended up running out of the gym. i took FIVE. MINUTES. to talk to this kid, and he told me he was upset because he didnt want his team to lose, and he felt like he was always a problem and nobody loved him. i told him we all cared about him and i wanted him to be having fun at camp, and that his friends would still play with him if he lost. we did thirty seconds of “smell the flower, blow out the candle” breathing exercises and the kid was so well behaved the rest of the day. its really not that hard if you just take a few minutes to try to connect with them like actual human beings.

I sat with a crying second grader today. (The age range is outside my wheelhouse but I was the most convenient adult.) He was crying, the other adults said, because his brother took a phone he was playing on. “Phone addicted,” everybody said. “If he would get up and play games with the other kids he wouldn’t be crying.”

He told me everyone lets his brother take things from him because his brother is younger, and doesn’t know better. He told me he doesn’t want to play because he’s tired, he has too many extracurriculars this summer and can’t get good sleep because “everyone in my camper is so loud when I’m trying to sleep.” He’s exhausted and only eight. His mom’s an acquaintance and told me she and the kid’s father are going through a separation — mom and four kids left the house to stay in a camper.

But people will seriously not listen to kids crying over seemingly minor things because on the surface it looks like a tantrum. If kids are given the space to articulate themselves they often will.

ok but like. there are two different types of privilege. there's type a "everybody should have this, but some people don't" and type b "nobody should have this, but some people do"

there's having parents who can pay for your application to any college, and then there's having parents who can bribe your way into any college. there's owning your own home, and then there's owning 50 houses and getting rich off hoarding a vital resource. there's not fearing for your life whenever cops are around, and then there's being the cop and being allowed to murder anyone at any time.

idk i just feel like that's an important distinction to make.
