I've already said that my number one piece of writing advice is to read.

But my number two piece of advice is this: be deliberate.

Honestly this would fix so many pieces of bad writing advice. Don't forbid people from doing something, tell them to be conscious and deliberate about it. This could help stop people from falling into common mistakes without limiting their creativity. Black and white imperatives may stop a few annoying beginner habits, but ultimately they will restrict artistic expression.

Instead of "don't use epithets": "Know the effect epithets have and be deliberate about using them." Because yes, beginners often misuse them, but they can be useful when a character's name isn't known or when you want to reduce them to a particular trait they have.

Instead of "don't use 'said'" or "just use 'said'": "Be deliberate about your use of dialogue tags." Because sometimes you'll want "said" which fades into the background nicely, but sometimes you will need a more descriptive alternative to convey what a character is doing.

Instead of "don't use passive voice": "Be deliberate about when you use passive voice." Because using it when it's not needed can detract from your writing, but sometimes it can be useful to change the emphasis of a sentence or to portray a particular state of mind.

Instead of blindly following or ignorantly neglecting the rules of writing, familiarize yourself with them and their consequences so you can choose when and if breaking them would serve what you're trying to get across.

Your writing is yours. Take control of it.

It probably sounds like I'm preaching to the choir here because most of my mutuals are already great writers. But I'm hoping this will make it to the right people.

I know practically nothing about sound in tv production but I still feel like I could do a better job sometimes like what is going on with the background music and sound effects

there's one sound effect (I think to release tension?? or build tension I have no fucking clue) that they repeat all the fucking time and it's so unnecessary I flinch every time I hear it 😭

Obsessing over Jeric in my BMW rewatch

I'm in season five RN in my rewatch and Jack is literally the cutest little thing and I just LIVE for the idea of season 5 Eric just flustering silly lil season 5 Jack. Like Eric's got the long hair rn and Jack's got the middle part and I can just see them like on a date out in the city, getting hotdogs and walking around and talking and Eric just runs his fingers through Jack's hair while Jack tells some dumb, meaningless story about college class or some barista who spelled his name wrong. And Eric is just fawning over him and loving every second of the story, even though it is plotless and empty. And Jack just sips his coke and laughs as he mentions, "oh, and this other time.." going on and on about anything and everything, sharing everything with no fear or embarrassment or hesitation— like he's just safe with Eric. And he is; Eric watches him with complete and utter awe, holds his hand on Jack's thigh like he will never let go and it's like he's built this shield around them, like their world is a separate planet from Earth. And Eric doesn't want the moment to ever end. And even though it does, somehow it doesn't. He still wakes up every morning to Jack's hair disheveled across his forehead while he sips coffee on the balcony. He still holds Jack's hand when they go through the subway. He still kisses Jack's knuckles before they split for classes everyday at school. He still lets his lips linger on Jack's temple when they lay together after sex. He still makes the popcorn just how Jack likes it. He still picks the movies for movie night with Jack on his mind. He still scribbles poems in the margins of his notebooks and sketches portraits on the edges of his tests. He still stays up a little later than he should every night, just watching Jack dozen, his chest rising and falling; sometimes Eric falls asleep with his palms flat to Jack's chest, just feeling the rhythm of his breathing.

He still gets to love him everyday.
