Instead of painting the entirety of the South as immoral or more susceptible to prejudice, Justified highlights the systemic and familial trauma that gave rise to that prejudice in the first place, as well as how continuously underestimating people like Crowder as stupid or inhuman only helps them do their dirty work. Goggins’ push for more for Boyd Crowder takes the show from a hollow “Good Cowboy with a Gun” narrative to a deep exploration of the psyche – and shared connection – of both Boyd Crowder and Olyphant’s Raylan Givens.

i'm kinda surprised by the perception of Saxon/Lochlan/Piper being a 'wants to fuck' circle with just one line extending from each bc i feel like the bizarre sexuality between them takes a huge backseat to the inter-sibling dynamic set up in the writing. Saxon talks about his sister's sexuality in gross and slimy ways, but I think more than anything it's a manifestation of how much he resents her and how much he wants to humble her and take her down a peg.

she has actively chosen to prioritize different things in her life and condescends to Saxon about his life choices as he in turn tries to aggravate her enlightened sensibilities, leaving them in fundamental opposition to each other. like all men as douchey and misogynistic as him, it drives him insane to be made to feel little by a woman...and a woman who hasn't had sex, at that! and doesn't want to get into the family business, and convinced their parents to take everyone on a hokey eat pray love vacation, and god she sucks so bad and she always gets what she wants!

there is a massive divide in morals and life philosophies (with Saxon modeling his father, and Piper, to a lesser extent, modeling her mother), mutual resentfulness, and a shared recognition of the fact that Lochlan has come of age and arrived at the point in his life where his impending choices will decide how he's going to live the rest of his life, what ideals he'll have, what parent he'll take after, etc. with how separated they all are in their daily lives, both Saxon and Piper know that the timing and togetherness of the vacation is critical, and that they need to extend themselves to and for Lochlan (while hindering the other from doing exactly the same).

Saxon and Piper have already had multiple heated moments where they've gotten under each other's skin as they try and belittle each other and get in the last word, and they've also been playing tug-of-war over Lochlan. his actor has said that Lochlan as the youngest child didn't have enough time with his siblings before they left the house, was neglected by his sedated mother and workaholic father, and ultimately was very lonely - which has turned him into a person desperate for love and attention. i'm not sure this complex has come across explicitly yet, but he has definitely been willing to be pushed and pulled between his siblings, not complaining, and potentially enjoying the attention.

still, Lochlan is feeling the pressure from the two opposing sides of his family [dad & Saxon, mom & Piper]. it seems pretty clear that Piper intends to join the monastery or at the very least, commit to her religious studies in a way that separates her from her family. the concept of losing his sister in this way will probably (unfortunately) leave Saxon as the only giver of the love and attention Lochlan desperately wants to experience and cling to.

with that said, it will be harrowing to discover what factors have contributed to the sexual tension between Lochlan and Saxon. what has happened to Saxon that has turned him into someone who is regularly explicitly sexual in his talk and behavior around his siblings? why is he so concerned with his younger brother's sexuality and why doesn't he think its inappropriate to insert himself into the narrative of his brother's sex life? is Saxon a victim of sexual assault/incest and has that adversely affected his recognition of interpersonal/interfamilial boundaries? is Saxon intentionally grooming his younger brother with this behavior, or does he honestly think its normal to talk and act that way with a family member? does Saxon knowingly engage incestuous thoughts about his family? or do those feelings exist deeply unconscious under the surface?

why does Lochlan appear to be interested in Saxon physically/sexually? if it's true that Saxon has a sexual interest in Lochlan (whether conscious or unconscious), does Lochlan recognize it for what it is? does he reciprocate it, and if so, why? (the creator commented that sex is used in many ways in this season, including as a means to gain power. one theory I've seen posited is that Lochlan recognizes Saxon's sexual interest in him and the hold sex has over Saxon and, feeling like there is no one in the world to love him and take an interest in him other than Saxon, pursues him and engages with Saxon's immoral impulses as a way to draw him in tighter.)

my thoughts as of episode 3 (likely to change many times before the end) is that Saxon is a victim of SA but has never considered himself to be one, that his behavior and ideologies have warped significantly in order to accommodate that fact, and that the way he interacts with Lochlan (which, to many viewers, is conveying a disturbing sexual interest) is largely coming from an unconscious place. Lochlan's side of it, though, I don't have a solid guess for. he has been eclipsed by his family's large personalities for the first three episodes and hasn't said or shown enough to give us any significant insight into his interior life. i think the two big theories are that its a genuine bleedthrough from the fucked up family dynamic he grew up in, or that he sees and accepts Saxon's unspeakable interest and latches onto it as a way to connect to him in an irreversible way - in both cases, underpinned by feelings of deep loneliness and insecurity.
