No sympathy for Nora.
Nora is not a child. She’s a full grown woman in her late twenties. She ran back into the past. Traumatized her mother (who is the same age as her at this point) with her lies, fairytales and fallacies of a childhood that was pretty great. She had Iris crying and agonizing over something she had no control of. She sat in her mother’s childhood home and talked trash about her. She mocked her mother’s profession. She attacked and yelled at her twice with her twisted narrative that past!Iris could have no rebuttal for and Nora knew that, but it didn’t stop her from screaming and yelling in Iris’ face.
The kid gloves some fans want Nora to be treated with is bullshit. They fail grasp how sickening Nora’s behavior towards her single black mother and her idolization of her barely-a-memory-white-father was.

It's like people missed the fact that 6 months into learning abt her powers Nora /went back in time to change the fucking timeline of the world/ which has already costed two lives and who knows how many other consequences. like... maybe Iris, her mother who knows her fucking kid, actually knows this is a thing she might do and was trying to prevent that /too/. We don't have the whole info! It's a one-sided biased account from someone who's still hurting! It's 4 episodes into the season!
!!!!!!!!!!!
Lol tbh Iris has spent most of her life keeping Barry out of trouble and then he gets superspeed and she has to DOUBLY keep his ass outta trouble. We’ve seen Barry fuck up the timeline and disappear and put people in peril and be targeted because of his powers, so it’s normal to think future!Iris had all that info PLUS shit we haven’t even seen yet and made a hard choice.
It reminds me a lot of the sisters in both versions of Charmed, where the mom binds the girls’ powers to protect them from literal HELL DEMONS AND LIKE SATAN from coming after them.
It’s a SHIT choice but unfortunately mothers have to make those choices all the time. AS AN ASIDE, WHEN DADS MAKE THAT SAME CHOICE THEY ARE RARELY LAMBASTED FOR IT LIKE MOMS ARE.
And the kids that suffer because of those choices have every right to be angry about it. Like I said, there is no right or wrong in these kinds of situations. No one is happy about it. I doubt future!Iris was gleefully slicing into her baby daughter’s shoulder to chip her, ya feel me? I bet she hated it as much as we hate thinking about it.

If you don’t think Iris was wrong, then do you think Joe was wrong for lying to her about Barry and Francine to protect her? When is it okay for a parent to lie? I’m genuinely asking because I keep seeing fans insist Iris wasn’t wrong here and I wanna know the reasoning. For me, I think lying is wrong, but it can be justified.
1. Yes I think Joe was wrong to lie to her about Barry and about Francine, neither of those things kept her out of harms way or really protected her in the end. She was going to find out about Barry regardless, and BARRY wanted to tell her, it was really up to Barry to tell her and he choose not to out of respect for Joe. That one is not on Joe. As far as Francine, he definitely should not have told her that her mother was dead if her mother wasn’t dead. Saying “mommy went away and I don’t know if she is coming back” is about the same thing without potentially setting her up for failure in the future. But I have a lot of feelings about how fucked up this show did Francine. Yet the white mother of Katrina gets to stick around and not be a former drug addict and UGH, I hated that fucking storyline.
2. Outright lying is not okay, at least not into perpetuity. Eventually your kid will be old enough to find out the truth. Lies of omissions don’t bother me that much, but active lying does. Now if Nora thought she had powers and asked Iris about it, and Iris flat out lied, I would have more of an issue with what Iris did. Simply not telling Nora that she had them is not the same thing.
There is some sort of justification for every situation, but a big difference between Joe (and Barry) lying about Barry’s powers, and about Francine (respectively) is that Iris has always (since the Pilot) had the emotional maturity to deal with both of those pieces of information. Might it have been better for Iris to tell Nora she was a speedster, and raise her as a meta? Maybe. It really depends on what the climate is like in the future. Maybe it wasn’t safe at all, like literally she would have been killed, if she was raised as a baby meta.
There’s also the fact that Iris is operating from the position of someone who has lost someone, or thought they lost someone, more than once due to them being a speedster.
First, she thought she lost Barry in S1 when Thawne created the particle acceleration explosion;
Then she thought she lost Barry in S2 when he re-created that explosion to get his powers back,
Then there’s the fact that Flashpoint was a thing;
Then she thought she lost Wally in S3 when Savitar tricked him to taking his place in the Speedforce;
Then she thought he lost Barry AGAIN when his ass voluntarily went to the Speedforce at the end of the season expecting to never return.
Season 4 was the first season where Barry (or Wally) wasn’t almost lost forever because of his being a speedster.  Then you have the fact that they knew the entire time that Barry was going to disappear in 2024, but they never knew if/when he was going to come back.
Iris had already lost Barry, probably, by the time she put that chip into Nora, her actions were based on actual knowledge of what could/would happen if her kid was a Speedster, and not just some blind need to protect or control her, that is the major difference between what she did and what Joe (and Barry) did to her in Seasons 1 and 2.
And I mean damn, look at what Nora did as soon as she found out, she went and fucked up a timeline.
So yes, Iris was right to do what she did, while Joe (and Barry) were wrong to lie to her in previous seasons.

Nora is problematic for me.
I don’t want to rant, but Nora is a brat and very narrow minded. She’s over here blaming Iris for something she might do in the future which is so insane. Like clearly Iris was trying to protect her baby and keep from losing her to whatever has Barry in the future. That’s not even irrational. Is it a bit too much? Maybe. But if Nora was even a tad bit empathetic, she would be able to deduce that oh yeah, my mom and dad had been with each other nearly their whole lives, so losing him and having no idea how to get him back for 25 years must have been absolutely devastating and so the natural reaction was to protect the child that came from their love. Like Duh. And considering that Nora is so freaking hardheaded and extra, I’m not sure it was a bad idea. But Nora can’t see past her nose. She does not listen to anyone and she’s reckless as hell. Barry has seen and told her about herself many times, but does she listen, even to the hero she idolizes? Nope. And I’m sure Iris could see that in her as a small child and was like, oh no, she gone get herself killed one day and I’m going to loose her, too.  She said “not today Satan” and had that chip put in. Was it a form of control? Yes, for a person who has no self control. Nora went back in time, knowing that she could fudge up the timeline. But did she care? No. Now everyone else is paying the price because she was so upset. Anyway. This post is too long. Thankfully Barry held Iris down and told Nora that anything Iris would do in the past, present, or future would be for the good of their family.

Although you do share a little bit more body language in common with your mother, who has been touching her left shoulder since I came around here. (x)
