self-evaluation——time space light

                                         Project Title
(How did this develop from your working title and what was involved in the decision making process?)
Christmas light
I decided to focus on staircase at first and had several attempts on it but it didn't turn well. So as this project is about time space and light, I want to do some street photograph at night. Then at the time I was reading an article about Christmas lighting ceremony. It has been a tradition. Before I thought Christmas just refer to the 24th and 25th but I came to know it is such an important part of life here and people start creating a Christmas atmosphere one month before. And the Christmas lighting ceremony indicates the Christmas season is coming. Also, when I wandered in the center, I noticed that so many people was attracted by the beauty light effects on regent street and stop to take photos of them or with them.
 Subject
(Reflect on the subject matter of your project and the background research on this subject)
Christmas light, regent street
The switching on of the Regent Street Christmas lights is one of London's major tourist attractions, marking the start of the festive season in the UK capital, and this year's display is set to be one of the most spectacular and technically advanced yet.
The Regent Street Association has organised Christmas lights every year since 1954, when an article in the Daily Telegraph commented on how drab London looked during Christmas.

  Aims, Objectives, Concept
(How and to what extent have you have achieved the aims and objectives of your project? Describe the main concept driving your project.)
I think I worked to achieve my goals: to capture people shooting at specific location——Regent Street. Because of the location and time I chose I feel it is connect to the project title “time space light”. Even though I think I could refine my idea so there won’t be so many elements to drive people away. And as I was randomly shooting as people passing by, there were shakes from time to time and lots of my photos were unfocused and made me struggle to meet the submission guideline. Some of my photos used flash some didn't so it is kind of weird to put them together. Also I experimented to use long exposure during my process. Like using them on light trail of cars where I found I need a tripod. After I got a tripod another sad thing I found was when I tried to blurry those of no importance people with a long exposure, the centre people also moved. Anyway, what you see now it is the things I manage to get after avoid problems I mentioned above.
 Form, medium, presentation
(What is the final form and method of presentation of your work and why did you make these decisions?)
The serie composed of eight prints on satin papers. I went to regent street at nights on different days and randomly took photos of pedestrians who stop to take photos of those hanging Christmas lights or selfies under that atmosphere. So the whole serie was took at night and black become mostly the background. And I feel the reflection of satin is the best for me to deal with those black.
 Research Methods
(What methods did you use to research this work and how did this research inform your project?)
I was basically inspired by photographers on instagram and also gather my resources from it. I was first inspired by Fred Herzog’s work “Crossing Powell” which was shoot in 1984. The light coming from the coca cola store just shines over the pedestrian who was walking across and projects a shadow on the road. I feel it is a great example of light using. I decided to have people in my photos. And then I was inspired by Martin Purr and Christopher Anderson. Both of them work for magnum photo publisher. The two post on my tumblr made me realize with the quick development of technologies, everyone enjoys a chance to capture themselves or landscape around them with their phones. So I just combined the two elements together: to shoot people who are shooting with their phones on street.

Largest ever Christmas light installation brings Regent Street heritage to life
This year's Regent Street Christmas light installation is set to be one of the most technically advanced yet

This year's event, on Sunday 15 November, will be hosted by Classic FM presenters Myleene Klass and Aled Jones, with festive performances by trumpeter Alison Balsom, soprano Laura Wright, the cast of the hit musical Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the Philharmonia Orchestra. Ballet superstar and Strictly Come Dancing judge, Darcey Bussell, will be turning on the lights at 6.30pm.

Designed by Belgium-based ACT Lighting Design, the display is entitled Timeless Elegance, inspired by the heritage of watchmaking on the street, as well as photographs depicting the first ever Regent Street Christmas lights from 1954, and the Lumière brother’s cinematography, first shown on Regent Street in 1896.
The lights will create a "golden way" through London
Metal cogs and wheels – some as large as 6m x 4m – are suspended above the street, representing the suspension of time, and each element will dynamically and continously transform, due to tailored video animations and lights that are projected onto them.
It is the most ambitious projection Christmas lighting scheme in the world, due to its sheer scale. There are 36,000 individual lighting control channels and 8 full artnet systems – comparable to a Rolling Stones stadium tour setup.
The network uses around 2.5 miles of fibre optic cable, around 5 miles of other cabling and over 10,000 rivets. The tinsel cabling includes 10,900 individually controlled LED lights, and approximately 46,000 LEDs are incorporated in three main "gateways" to form screens.
Massive cogs will be suspended above the street
According to Koert Vermeulen, founder and principal designer of ACT Lighting Design, who is known for designing the Christmas lights for the Champs Elysees in Paris, the idea was to give people the opportunity to "see time".
On the hour every hour, the installation will come to life, with moving images projected onto the cogs and wheels above the street, and giant LED screens displaying video content on the gateways.
The "gateways" contain approximately 46,000 LEDs
"We do a really dynamic show on the hour every hour, and our timepiece becomes like a clock in itself, like the clocktower in a church," said Mr Vermeulen.
"We have some more static images in between, and then on 15 minutes, 30 and 45 minutes we have a smaller, more intimate show elements, so people really feel this timing through the content and the lighting dynamic."

Koert Vermeulen, founder and principal designer of ACT Lighting Design
David Shaw OBE, head of the Regent Street Portfolio at The Crown Estate, added that ACT Lighting Design was chosen because it incorporated the context and legacy of the street into its designs.
“The Regent Street Christmas lights have for over half a century been the iconic symbol of London's west end at the festive season and we want to continue to build on this heritage," he said.
“ACT has created visually stunning proposal that is innovative and diverse in its creativity.”

Nights
ruff made the nights in the wake of the first gulf war and the ensuing news coverage. To capture and broadcast missions taking place at night, low-light vision cameras were used, memorably casting their subjects in a green glow.
ruff made a similar device to his 35mm camera and took to the streets of Dusseldorf. framed by a dark circular vignette.
the green glow make the whole image look more mysterious and the circular vignette help focus on the subject ruff wants to show to the audience. and the idea is quite interesting, feel like some shoots from the surveillance.

NASA launched the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter in 2005 to gather scientific data about the planet. information as well as images are transmitted back to earth as radio signals, which, in ruff’s hands, have been tilted onto vertical plane  tocreat these painterly landscape. and the 3rd image also got a 3d view.

Whitechapel displayed American abstract expressionist Jackson  Pollock’s works in 1958 (second image). ruff intervenes in these historic installation shots by digitally retouching them with a color palette inspired by that era. his intervention highlights the impact of modernism on both the architecture and the exhibition design.
