Y’know what else the wasteland probably has in abundance? Jiggers. The real life vermin native to dry desert regions which burrow into unprotected skin, usually the feet. The areas we see in the games don’t have a lot of readily available resources to make clothing with, so it’s likely that a big portion of the population, especially children, go barefoot. They are removed in the extremely gross way you’d expect, by digging them out with a blade and tweezers then presumably disinfecting the area to remove excess larvae - which sounds like something an untrained wastelander could do for anyone who needed it for a small fee, even if just to provide some temporary relief.
